    The Courses: Veterinary Medicine
    A Churchill Perspective
Veterinary Medicine offers excellent opportunities covering a variety of practical and academic fields. At Cambridge the courses are particularly suited to people with an interest in the scientific foundations of the subject, both because the supervision system allows you to follow up areas of interest, and because you have the opportunity, in your third year, to specialise in a single chosen subject. In College, veterinary students rub shoulders with men and women of many other disciplines. Moreover, in University laboratories and lecture theatres they do not form an isolated group; most lectures and practicals in the pre-clinical years are also attended by students of human medicine, together with Natural Scientists taking subjects such as Physiology and Pathology. The main purpose of this page is to tell you what's distinctive about doing veterinary medicine at Churchill. It is within the College that students are known as individuals, and one of the most important features of any College are the people who look after the students in that College. Of course the most important people making Churchill a very special place to study veterinary medicine are the other Churchill vets (and also the medics with whom you will share a lot of teaching) and that's why we want lots of terrific people (like you?) to come and join us.

Veterinary medicine
Veterinary medicine is the application of medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic principles to companion, domestic, exotic, wildlife, and production animals. See also: Veterinary Science is vital to the study and protection of animal production practices, herd health and monitoring spread of widespread disease. It requires the acquisition and application of scientific knowledge in multiple disciplines and uses technical skills towards disease prevention in both domestic and wild animals. Human health is protected by veterinary science working closely with many medical professionals by the careful monitoring of livestock health as well as its unique training in epidemiology and emerging zoonotic diseases worldwide. Veterinary medicine is informally as old as the human/animal bond but in recent years has expanded exponentially because of the availability of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for most species. Animals nowadays often receive advanced medical, dental, and surgical care including insulin injections, root canals, hip replacements, cataract extractions, and pacemakers. Veterinarians assist in ensuring the quality, quantity, and security of food supplies by working to maintain the health of livestock and inspecting the meat itself.

Veterinary Medicine
Significant Points Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment ... Sources of Additional Information Significant Points In American and Canadian English, a veterinarian (from Latin veterinae, "draught animals") is an animal doctor, a practitioner of veterinary medicine. The equivalent term in British English is veterinary surgeon, and both terms are often shortened to vet. The word "veterinarian" was first used in English by the doctor Sir Thomas Browne (1605–1682). Nature of the Work Although veterinarians do hold a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine (in the United States and Canada, at least), not all veterinarians enter clinical practice. Those that do practice medicine in fields, such as companion animal or "pet" medicine, reptile medicine, ratite medicine, livestock medicine, equine medicine (sports or race track or show or rodeo medicine, etc.), or laboratory animal medicine. Other veterinarians may enter a research field to study an area of medical, veterinary medical, or pharmacological research. Research veterinarians were the first to isolate oncoviruses, Salmonella species, Brucella species, and various other pathogenic agents. They also helped conquer malaria and yellow fever, solved the mystery of botulism, produced an anticoagulant used to treat some people with heart disease, and defined and developed surgical techniques for humans, such as hip-joint replacement and limb and organ transplants.
