The structural virology group in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University consists of six different laboratories that use a combination of cryo-electron microscopy, crystallography, and molecular biology to elucidate the processes of viral entry, replication, and pathogenesis. One of the strengths of this group is the extensive network of collaborative efforts between the laboratories. Jue Chen:
Biochemical and structural studies of Flavivirus entry mechanism. Alan Friedman:
X-ray crystallography to study virus structure. Richard J. Kuhn:
Molecular biology techniques to examine the process of virus replication, assembly and pathogenesis. Carol Post:
NMR and molecular dynamics to examine virus assembly, uncoating, and the mechanisms of virus-drug interactions. Michael Rossmann:
X-ray crystallographic techniques to probe the structure/function relationshiops of several viruses and their receptors. David A. Sanders:

The American Society for Virology was founded in 1981 to provide a forum for investigators of human, animal, insect, plant, fungal, and bacterial viruses, whether the research involves clinical, ecological, biological, or biochemical approaches. The stated aim of the Society is to promote the exchange of information and stimulate discussion and collaboration among scientists active in all aspects of virology. These goals are achieved by means of meetings organized or sponsored by the Society, obtaining for the members reduced subscription rates for virological journals, soliciting travel grants to attend national and international meetings and representation on national and international councils. Research in the Department of Virology deals with plant diseases caused by viruses, phytoplasma and viroids. Studying viral genome structure and function, development and adaptation of diagnostic systems, disease transmission and epidemiology and to development of means to reduce virus damage in protected or field grown crops.
Detection and Identification of Plant Viruses.
Several different technologies have been developed and are currently in use in our Department. These methods include electron microscopy (EM), biological tests, serological and molecular techniques such as PCR, RT-PCR, dsRNA analysis and nucleic acid hybridizations. Most of these methods are being used for the production of virus-free propagation material as well as in commercial laboratories for virus diagnosis in vegetatively-propagated crops (bulbs, corms and stems), vegetables, fruit trees and grapes.
