Welcome
Welcome to the web site of the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. Our Department is devoted to Education, Research, and Service in the areas of Virology and Bacteriology. Our areas of interest are diverse and include pathogenesis, viral oncology, vaccine development and evaluation, antibiotic resistance, and host responses to infection. Our expertise includes studies of respiratory viruses, viral gastroenteritis, HIV and AIDS, and microbial genomics. We also have a strong interest in emerging infectious diseases and biodefense. We provide a section on these pages devoted to topics such as influenza, SARS, anthrax and other potential bioterrorism agents, to serve as a community resource and summary of our research in these areas. On these pages, you will find much more information about the Education, Research, and Service activities of the department. If you would like any additional information, please

Welcome Upton's Blog This resource Provides access to viral genomes and a variety of tools for comparative genomic analyses. At the heart of the system is VOCs (Virus Orthologous Clusters), a database with built-in tools that allows users to retrieve and analyze the genes, gene families, and genomes of different virus families. The database is the source of information for other programs of the workbench for whole genome alignments, genome display, or gene/protein sequence analysis. Many of these tools can also be used with user-provided sequence data. The workbench tools are Java-based and user-friendly to allow all users, regardless of computer skill-level, to access and analyze the data. To start There are two ways to start an application from the workbench:
  • Select an application, and then choose its associated database when the application starts. Select a database, and then start an application using the afore-selected database.

General Virology
GENERAL CLASSIFICATION The viruses are a large group of obligate intracellular parasites capable of infecting a variety of different cell types. Viruses may contain either DNA or RNA as their genomic material and this material may be either single- or double-stranded. Single-stranded genomes may be of positive (i.e. mRNA) or negative (i.e. anti-mRNA) polarity. Surrounding and protecting the genome is a coat of protein ("capsid") arranged in one of several possible morphologies. Certain viruses also contain an additional phospholipid bilayer ("envelope") derived from the host cell and surrounding the protein capsid. This page will discuss the similarities and differences of these biological entities. Some of the viruses that cause disease in humans are described in the following table (or click here to see a viral classification flowchart): Virus Genome Polarity Segments Morphology Enveloped Diseases Picorna RNA +ss Icosahedral No Polio, Hepatitis A, Colds Toga RNA +ss Icosahedral Yes Encephalitis, Rubella

Coverage spans a broad spectrum of topics, from descriptions of newly discovered viruses, to studies of virus structure, composition, and genetics, to studies of virus interactions with host cells, organisms and populations. Studies employ molecular biologic, molecular genetics, and current immunologic and epidemiologic approaches. Contents include studies on the molecular pathogenesis, pathophysiology, and genetics of virus infections in individual hosts, and studies on the molecular epidemiology of virus infections in populations. Also included are studies involving applied research such as diagnostic technology development, monoclonal antibody panel development, vaccine development, and antiviral drug development.

A Biophysical and Evolutionary Research Perspective
Professor Jeffrey A. Sands : B-217 Iacocca Hall, e-mail jas0@lehigh.edu
Department of Biological Sciences
Lehigh University In this advanced course, we will study viruses at the levels of their molecular biology and genetics, and their interactions with the host organism. Our coverage will focus almost entirely on viruses that infect humans and cause serious disease. We will take a comparative approach, and ask questions from a biophysical and evolutionary perspective. Useful websites for up-to-date viral disease information are the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (including its journal Emerging Infectious Diseases ) and the World Health Organization . Lehigh has electronic subscriptions to many journals publishing new virology research; the ones we will use the most are Science the Nature journals (including Nature Medicine Journal of Virology Journal of General Virology Virology and Journal of Infectious Diseases
Grading : Half of your grade will be based on participation, discussions, assignments, quizzes, and presentations during the semester: 1. "professional level discussion/assignment" days during January and February; 2. "short journal article" presentations in late March and early April; 3. "long journal article presentations" in mid-late April; and 4. "announced quizzes" as deemed appropriate. The other half of your grade will be based on a final exam in May. You should establish a notebook for all of the material in this course. Build the notebook into a thorough, complete document (your own "2007 Virology Textbook") by the end of the semester. The final exam will be "open notebook".
