Coastal wetlands have critically important ecological values and functions, yet there are currently few basinwide data available for assessing their ecological health. The Great Lakes Commission has convened the Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands Consortium to expand the monitoring and reporting capabilities of the U.S. and Canada under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

Wetlands… "are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth; they rival both rain forest and cultivated land.
But unlike agricultural fields, this primary production occurs with no fossil fuel inputs in the form of petrol and fertilizer, no tending by humans, no artificial irrigation and no heavy machinery. Wetlands can therefore be regarded as factories in the landscape that mass produce both organic matter and oxygen to support surrounding ecosystems. Draining wetlands may therefore be compared to systematically smashing the factories that support life on earth."

Engineers Build Land with Dredged Sediment
Marsh Creation as a Coastal Restoration Strategy
Erosion and subsidence exact a heavy toll on Louisiana’s coastal zone, claiming nearly 2,000 square miles of land in the past 75 years. But scientists and engineers seeking to rebuild barrier islands and restore marshes have a powerful technique at their disposal: marsh creation. “By replacing sediment compacted by subsidence or eroded away by coastal forces such as tides and waves, marsh creation rebuilds land, restoring marshes and barrier islands to an elevation that can support wetland habitat,” explains Russ Joffrion, a civil engineer with the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (LDNR). “It’s the only restoration technique that immediately reverses land loss.” Continue reading this issue . . . Louisiana is blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Approximately 40 percent of the coastal wetlands of the lower 48 states is located in Louisiana. This fragile environment is disappearing at an alarming rate. Louisiana has lost up to 40 square miles of marsh a year for several decades - that's 80 percent of the nation's annual coastal wetland loss. If the current rate of loss is not slowed, by the year 2040 an additional 800,000 acres of wetlands will disappear, and the Louisiana shoreline will advance inland as much as 33 miles in some areas.

BEFORE YOU BUY - BEFORE YOU BUILD Are you considering buying undeveloped land? Building a home, a retail center, or marina? How about putting in a driveway or an addition to your house? In every case, the presence of wetlands may affect where and whether you buy, build, or develop. In New Jersey and throughout the United States, wetlands are protected on public and private property. New Jersey protects wetlands under the New Jersey Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act, N.J.S.A. 13:9B. This law also protects transition areas or "buffers" around freshwater wetlands. New Jersey also protects coastal wetlands under a different law. See the pamphlet entitled Guide to New Jersey's Coastal Permitting Program if you are in a coastal area and think you may have coastal wetlands on your property.

Please improve this article or discuss the issue on the talk page A subtropical wetland in Florida USA , with an endangered American Crocodile A wetland is an area of land consisting of soil that is saturated with moisture , such as a swamp marsh , or bog As defined in terms of physical geography , a wetland is an environment "at the interface between truly terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic systems making them inherently different from each other yet highly dependent on both" . In essence, wetlands are ecotones . Wetlands often host considerable biodiversity and endemism . In many locations such as the United Kingdom and USA they are the subject of conservation efforts and Biodiversity Action Plans The United States Army Corps of Engineers and the United States Environmental Protection Agency jointly define wetlands as "those areas that are inundated or saturated by surface or ground water at a frequency and duration sufficient to support, and that under normal circumstances do support, a prevalence of vegetations typically adapted for life in saturated soils. Wetlands generally include swamps, marshes, bogs, and similar areas."

Wetland Links
Last updated on Sat 26 Jun 2004 at 05:22 PM I would appreciate any reports of inactive links on this page or of any wetland-related web pages that are not listed here that might be good to list. I am now much more heavily involved in groundwater modeling than in wetlands so this page tends to get attention only when someone points out something that could be changed. Send corrections to rbwinston@mindspring.com I don't know whether any of the products on this page really work. I just saw that there was some information available that might be of interest to people who deal with wetlands.
