28. DENTINE MICROWEAR IN XENARTHRA: IMPLICATIONS FOR PALEODIETARY RECONSTRUCTION
This issue particularly affects xenarthran taxa (including modern sloths and armadillos), as their teeth are comprised solely of dentine.

DENTINE MICROWEAR IN XENARTHRA: IMPLICATIONS FOR PALEODIETARY RECONSTRUCTION
GREEN, Jeremy L. , Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences, North Carolina State University, Campus Box 8208, Raleigh, NC 27695-8208, jlgreen3@unity.ncsu.edu Megalonyx Holmesina ) were then analyzed and compared to this database to test the validity of dentine microwear in assessing paleodiet. Preliminary results show that fossil dentine microwear can yield paleodietary information. The results of this study are significant not only in determining the significance of dentine microwear features in interpreting paleodiet, but also in allowing future comparison of dentine microwear with previous accounts of enamel microwear in order to gain a broader understanding of the mechanics of food scarring on different dental tissues. Please choose an animal from the list below:
Order Xenarthra (a.k.a Edentata) Xenarthrans, also known as edentates, comprise a small group of some of the more unusual mammals. They are, for the most part, insectivores and herbivores, and are either terrestrial or arboreal in nature. They are found in the warmer climates of South America and North America, being found in Mexico and southern US in North America. Edentates usually lack incisors or canines, and of those that have them their molars lack enamel. Their teeth are held in by a single root each. Edentates have small brains. Anatomically, they have between 5-9 cervical vertebrae, whereas most other mammals have 7. Today, there are 29 species in 4 families; according to the fossil record there were at one time 12 families comprised of animals such as glyptodonts and giant ground sloths. The present-day families are: Dasypodidae (armadillos) 20 spp
Myrmecophagidae (anteaters) 4 spp
Bradypodidae (3-toed sloths) 3 spp
Megalonychidae (2-toed sloths) 2 spp Back Home

A fossil primate from Colhuehuapian deposits at the Gran Barranca in nearby Chubut Province, previously assigned to Homunculus , is provisionally placed in the genus Soriacebus . All of the fossil platyrrhines from Santa Cruz Province have been repeatedly shown to have phenetic similarities to Aotus, Callicebus
