Modern Zoos
It's not Australia, but koalas feel at home. If you are the sort of person who complains about overly large zoo exhibits that allow animals to stray from the most prominent viewing areas, you should take a closer look at what these wildlife parks are trying to accomplish. As "Gorilla Tropics," "Polar Bear Plunge," and other San Diego Zoo areas demonstrate in ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS, the zoo is not a "living museum," but a place where animals should feel at home. Today, zoos combine educational exhibit areas with backstage research areas where zoologists study the animals under their care.
Visitors are captivated by animals at the zoo. During the latter part of the 20th century, zoos began to provide a new experience for visitors by replacing the iron bars and concrete walls of cages with protective moats, bigger animal areas, and recreated tropical rainforests. The San Diego Zoo, founded in 1916, helped pioneer this shift.
Zoos used to keep all animals in cages. In 1868, Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo was reportedly the first zoo in the United States to open its gates to the public, followed closely by the Philadelphia Zoo and New York's Central Park Zoo. These parks filled their cages with wild-caught animals. As the burgeoning populations and growing industries of the 20th century began decimating wild habitats, zoos took on the role of housing remnants of once-thriving animal populations.

For the sake of elephants in the wild and in captivity, zoos must phase out their elephant exhibits, abandon failed breeding programs and future capture plans, and strive to provide the elephants currently in captivity with a more humane existence.
Zoos rob elephants of their most basic needs, including social companionship and adequate space to exercise. Zoos keep elephants in unnaturally small groups and routinely shuffle elephants between facilities with callous disregard for the special bonds between elephant friends. Lack of exercise and long hours standing on hard surfaces are major contributors to foot infections and arthritis, the leading causes of death among captive elephants. According to a study commissioned by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), elephants in zoos have significantly shorter lifespans than their wild counterparts.
Zoos operate under the misleading veil of conservation and education when, in reality, these proud and sensitive animals are kept merely as tourist draws to boost sagging profits. Captive breeding will never contribute to the survival of the species because elephants breed poorly in captivity and the offspring who do survive can never be released into the wild. And as far as education goes, keeping elephants in captivity teaches children that it is acceptable to deprive these animals of all that is important to them for the sake of our amusement.

Profile
As the nation's largest metropolitan wildlife preserve, this world famous zoo boasts more than 4,000 animals on its sprawling 265 acres of land—much of which has been transformed into unique habitats for zebras and other unique creatures. The Congo Gorilla Forest is particularly noteworthy: Home to two families of lowland primates, it's the largest facsimile of an African rain forest in on the planet. Other highlights include daily penguin feedings and bee-eating birds catch their prey in mid-flight. You can get a bird's-eye view yourself with the Skyfari, a two-mile-long span of cable cars that soar high above the menagerie. During the winter months, when the Skyfari is out of commission, head to Tiger Mountain to check out the daily keeper demonstrations with the giant Siberians, or venture through the indoor, tropical Asian rainforest at Jungle World.

Keeping Pets (and People) Healthy
By Linda Bren
National Pet Owners Survey (2003/2004)
In the United States, there are more pets than peopleabout 378 million pets versus 280 million people Breakdown of pet ownership: Cats: 77.7 million Dogs: 65 million Birds: 17.3 million Reptiles: 9 million Small Animals: 16.8 million Saltwater fish: 7 million Freshwater fish: 185 million Source: American Pet Products Manufacturers Association
Pets occupy an esteemed place in many of our households, often being treated as members of the family. They offer a source of amusement, pleasure, and companionship. They provide opportunities for outdoor exercise and socialization. And, according to some studies, they can decrease our blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. But along with the emotional rewards and health benefits of pet ownership also come health risks. Petsand other animalscan give us diseases. Animal diseases that can be transmitted to humans are known as zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses. Some people are more likely than others to get zoonoses: the elderly, pregnant women, infants and children less than 5 years old, people undergoing treatments for cancer, people who have received organ transplants, and people with suppressed immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS.

World Zoos And Aquariums Develop Plan To Respond To The Extinction Of Frogs
ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2007) See also: In October 2005, WAZA, The World Zoo and Aquarium Association, therefore adopted a strong resolution calling on all zoos and aquariums to respond to the global extinction crisis facing the world's frogs and other amphibians. This is part of a wider approach led by IUCN - The World Conservation Union, which encompasses also conservation measures in the field. Many factors behind the extinction of frogs are still not well understood. However, it is known today that, in some parts of the world, there is a fungus causing the quick extinction of every amphibian species throughout the range. Experts are convinced that, in many cases, the only solution is to conserve them in zoos and aquariums with the hope that the species can be reintroduced to the wild at a later stage. This will require a massive coordinated effort, but it is a key solution in addressing the global amphibian extinction crisis. With a view to galvanising coordinated action by zoos and aquariums, experts of the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union, representatives of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and other stakeholders met from February 12 to 15 at El Valle, Panama, discussing how a global action plan should be implemented. They recommended criteria for prioritizing species and best practices for breeding facilities, and determined the capacity for rapid response.
