Technology Petting Zoos
I often recommend that libraries try to set up Technology Petting Zoos for staff to touch and connect with the plethora of devices that our users are using. Learning by doing seems to work well! We've had several of these types of sessions on a larger scale at SLA conferences where gadgets are shown and passed around. I think that these work even better with smaller groups. Anyway, here are some ideas that I've collected.
Start with just one type of device - phones, MP3 players, games, etc. It will help if you Inventory what your staff and their families have and will volunteer (voluntarily) to bring in and share for a few hours.
1. Have everyone bring in their phones or borrow a phone from their spouses. You should be able to get everything from a plain phone through to a Treo or Blackberry. Bring in the manuals. Play with the cameras, video features, e-mail, texting, calling, voice dialing, etc. Try to download a free ringtone.
2. Have an MP3 petting zoo. Have people (staff, Librarians, trustees or users) bring in what they have. For greater variety ask the teens or pages in the library. You should be able to easily see iPods, assorted MP3 players, phones that play songs, car radios, etc. Listen and see how the metadata is organized. Download a song or two from iTunes and from websites and MySpace. Look for podcasts and lectures and listen to them. Share favorite podcast, video and MP3 search engines.
3. Borrow a few games - PS2, PS3, Wii, Nintendo, XBox, etc. Play. You don't need to do it all at once. You can do one at time. Try to make sure everyone takes a turn. Many library folks like to watch and not play. They can't learn as much that way. Teens love to demo their expertise. Have everyone play Guitar Hero and/or DDR.

Chimpanzees Living in Zoos
Not all chimpanzees live in their natural African habitats, free to move about their territory in search of food and other chimpanzees. About 500 chimpanzees live in zoos in the United States alone. Some of the older chimpanzees in zoos today were born in the wild and captured for sale. Wild caught zoo chimpanzees are members of the "founder population" or chimpanzees not related to any chimpanzees already in zoos. The oldest chimpanzee in an American Zoo is a female, Little Mama, who lives in Lion Country Safari, West Palm Beach, Florida. Estimated to be born in 1938, she is thought to be nearly seventy years old.
Chimpanzees that make up the current zoo population are living longer than their predecessors. The current mean age of zoo chimpanzees is in the mid twenties. This low figure is due to a very high infant mortality rate. Infants born today that survive infancy can expect a longer life span because of an accumulation of knowledge of chimpanzee care gained over the past half century. They live in more natural and suitable housing, their diet is designed to be nutritious and appropriate for their digestive systems, and daily enrichment objects and activities increase mental stimulation while decreasing boredom, depression and lethargy. It is important for people visiting zoos to remember that chimpanzees are highly intelligent creatures capable of complex social behaviors, such as tool use and tool making. Social, by nature, chimpanzees suffer greatly when housed alone. People watching chimpanzees in zoos are often surprised at the similarity of chimpanzee bodies and behavior to their own. When approaching or watching chimpanzees in zoos, humans should respect their privacy, keeping their voices low and refrain from loud boisterous behavior.

    Whistleblowers: Champions for Animals
Whistleblowers have been instrumental in revealing neglect, carelessness, and mistreatment at scores of facilities. The USDA cited the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois, for failure to provide adequate shelter after a whistleblower alerted us to the December 2004 death of a camel who had been inadvertently left out overnight.

A chimpanzee named Edith was born at the Saint Louis Zoo. Just after her third birthday, she was taken from her family and shuffled around to at least five different facilities, finally landing at a Texas roadside zoo. During an undercover investigation at this poorly run zoo, PETA found Edith in a filthy, barren concrete pit. She was hairless and had been living on rotten produce and dog food. Some zoos even sell animals for slaughter. At the Minnesota Zoo, about 130 animals from its petting zoo, including goats, calves, pigs, and sheep, are sold to an auction house for slaughter each year.

Zoos in a pickle over horse meat
By Brad Haynes Seattle Times staff reporter PREV of NEXT ROD AYDELOTTE / AP Kwanzaa, a young South African lion at Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas, celebrates his birthday with a cake made from 10 pounds of horse meat, plus whipped cream and a carrot. Animal-rights activists campaigning to end horse slaughter in America have run up against an unexpected friend of the horse-meat industry: the nation's zoos. After Texas shut down two horse-slaughter plants in January, the last plant in the country is fighting off closure in Illinois courts. And Congress, concerned with slaughter methods and the horse's iconic place in American history, is again considering a federal horse-slaughter ban that passed the House of Representatives last year. For Woodland Park and Point Defiance, the plant closures have presented practical concerns on top of any ethical ones, and they are exploring the possibility of switching entirely to beef in the months ahead.

If you still equate the word zoo with cowed animals trapped behind bars, then it may be time to update your mental image inventory. The sad cages of menageries past have been replaced, by and large, with zoos that provide evocative and realistic habitats for countless creatures, in addition to offering visitors the appeal of getting up close and personal with animals of all shapes and sizes. As of 2007, there are 16,306 endangered species globally, according to The World Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened Species. In fact, many threatened species no longer exist in the wild—you’ve got to visit a zoo or two if you want to see some of the world’s rarest fauna. Even the most commercial zoological parks have an eco-friendly aura these days. Says John Lehnhart, Animal Operations Director at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, “the backstory of the park is conservation and connecting people with nature.” The star attractions at the park are its some 1,500 exotic animals (and that, Lehnart points out, isn’t counting the birds and the fishes), as well as Kilimanjaro Safaris, a 110-acre re-creation of the African savannah.

Zoos and Aquariums Celebrate 10 Wildlife Conservation Successes SILVER SPRING, Maryland , December 18, 2007 (ENS) - From breeding toads back from extinction to developing a hormone test for North Atlantic right whales, 200 zoos and aquariums across the United States are working as members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to ensure the survival of rare and endangered animals. Today they issued a Top 10 List of wildlife conservation success stories for 2007. In the last five years, facilities accredited by the nonprofit Association of Zoos and Aquariums, AZA, funded 3,693 conservation projects in more than 100 countries. Annual spending on conservation by member organizations averages nearly $70 million per year. AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy said, "The 2007 top 10 list is just a small sample of the important work of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums." From amphibians to dolphins to gorillas, "AZA accredited institutions and their partners are at the forefront of wildlife conservation here in North America and around the world," said Maddy. Tigers don't belong in zoos
But where can the big cats go? The deadly mauling in San Francisco underscores the paradox of zoos today. By Susan McCarthy Pages 1
    • Share San Francisco Zoo image Tatiana San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day, was being teased or taunted. It doesn't matter because zoo animals shouldn't be able to escape from their enclosures no matter how rude people are to them. It also doesn't matter because even if the young men were doing nothing, or were making gestures of homage and respect, Tatiana had years of reasons to be in a bad mood. Tigers are among zoo visitors' favorite animals. They're also one reason many people hate zoos. Saddened by the picture of misery presented by the tiger who repetitively paces back and forth, back and forth, some people never go back. "Tigers simply don't belong in the zoo," says Adam Roberts, senior vice president of the animal advocacy organization Born Free USA.
