Skeptic founder Michael Shermer on TEDTalks
Skeptic Magazine founder Michael Shermer takes us on a hilarious romp through the strange claims we humans put forth as truth - from alien encounters to Virgin Mary sightings on pizza pies, to hidden messages revealed while playing "Stairway to Heaven" backwards - and explains the evolutionary and cognitive basis for these lapses in reason. Don't miss the one-minute challenge testing your own observational skills... Shermer is the founder/publisher of Skeptic Magazine , and author of several books, including Why People Believe Weird Things (Recorded February 2006 in Monterey, CA. Statistician Peter Donnelly on TEDTalks
Statistician Peter Donnelly explores the common mistakes humans make in interpreting statistics, and the devastating impact these errors can have on the outcome of criminal trials. Donnelly is a Statistics Professor at Oxford University who collaborates with biologists, applying statistical models to genetics, with the hope of shedding more light on evolutionary history and the structure of the human genome.

Things On Lisa Rein's Fair and Balanced Mind Today home archives May 30, 2005 The Brain's Angular Gyrus May Be Key To Metaphor Comprehension Or it may not. But it kinda seems like it. (I love this stuff. The sooner we figure out how the brain works, the sooner we can go about creating a computer to house our consciousness, the sooner we can get on with the singularity already.)
(Never mind that it'll never work :-)
BRAIN PIC: CENTER FOR BRAIN AND COGNITION, UCSD
Brain Region Linked to Metaphor Comprehension

Vilayanur S. Ramachandran of the University of California at San Diego and his colleagues tested four patients who had experienced damage to the left angular gyrus region of their brains... The angular gyrus is more developed in humans than in other primates and is located in the brain at the junction of areas specialized for processing touch, hearing and vision. "While it would be premature to conclude that the angular gyrus is the 'metaphor center' of the human brain," Ramachandran says, "we suggest that the evolution of the dominant angular gyrus contributed enormously to the evolution of many quintessentially human abilities, including metaphoricaland other abstractthinking." He will present the results on Friday at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Society in Los Angeles.
