A 15 part audio program explaining the undemocratic workings of the monetary system and demystifying the manipulations of capital markets. Includes "How Money is Created," "Predatory Lending," "Trading Nature and Cooking the Books," and "Bankruptcy Bill's Shoot-Out at the Social Safety Net." What are the myths of capitalist economics? Within capitalism, economics plays an important ideological role. Economics has been used to construct a theory from which exploitation and oppression are excluded, by definition. We will attempt here to explain why capitalism is deeply exploitative. CEOs climb the stairway to heaven I mean, hell

Why an Economics Major? Economics looks at improving the well being of society in an economy of scarce resources, issues of efficiency, and equity. Microeconomics deals with the supply and demand - how individuals and firms make decisions about what is produced. Macroeconomics looks at the overall economy - national and international - what types of government policy and tax decisions are made to stabilize the economic environment. All Economic majors should know: Analytical skills, good communication skills, facility with work mathematics and statistics, familiarity with other social sciences. Students who want to become professional economists should consider graduate study and taking more than minimum in math (a minor in math is recommended). Skills that Economics major develops: Awareness of local and international economic conditions, ability to analyze and evaluate business and government proposals, critical thinking, problem-solving, forecasting, analysis of market competition and strategic planning skills. Ability to think logically, critically, and creatively. Economics is an excellent background for graduate studies in areas such as law, business, or public administration.

http://www.zmag.org/parecon/indexnew.htm
Participatory Economics (Parecon for short) is a type of economy proposed as an alternative to contemporary capitalism. The underlying values are equity, solidarity, diversity, and participatory self management. The main institutions are workers and consumers councils utilizing self managed decision making, balanced job complexes, remuneration according to effort and sacrifice, and participatory planning. This page links to articles, interviews, talks, instructionals, Q/A sessions, and books about parecon and closely related matters.
"A great many activists and concerned people ask, quite rightly, what alternative form of social organization can be imagined that might overcome the grave flaws often real crimes of contemporary society in more far-reaching ways than short-term reform. Parecon is the most serious effort I know to provide a very detailed possible answer to some of these questions, crucial ones, based on serious thought and careful analysis."
