Ptolemy's Geography
The Science of the Earth's Surface
Ptolemy, who gave Greek astronomy its final form in the second century A.D., did the sameand morefor geography and cartography. His massive work on the subject, which summed up and criticized the work of earlier writers, offered instruction in laying out maps by three different methods of projection, provided coordinates for some eight thousand places, and treated such basic concepts as geographical latitude and longitude. In Byzantium, in the thirteenth century, Ptolemic maps were reconstructed and attached to Greek manuscripts of the text. And in the fifteenth century, a Latin translation of this text, with maps, proved a sensation in the world of the book. A best seller both in the age of luxurious manuscripts and in that of print, Ptolemy's "Geography" became immensely influential. Columbus one of its many readersfound inspiration in Ptolemy's exaggerated value for the size of Asia for his own fateful journey to the west.

Welcome The Department of Geography aims to foster world class teaching and research in a collegial environment of scholars from undergraduate to professor. We welcome students and staff to a supportive international and interdisciplinary community of around 45 faculty, 40 support staff, 20 research staff, 80 postgraduates and 600 undergraduates that aims to produce the very best work in geography at every level. The Department builds on a tradition of excellence in teaching and scholarship, going back to the foundation of the Department in 1928 and it has been recognised as one of the best in the country in the past three Research Assessment Exercises, being one of only four departments granted a 6*. This means our research has been independently judged to have an excellent international reputation. The quality of our teaching has been rated as excellent by external Quality Assessment Audit. Durham Geography receives continued recognition as a top-flight national and international Department for teaching and research - the most recent example being "The Times - Good University Guide (2007)", following earlier ones in 2004 and 2005, "The Guardian - University Guide (2004, 2005)". Its research was ranked first for overall output by The Guardian. These indicators recognise the efforts and ability of all the people who comprise the department.

Overview of BLS Statistics by Geography
For most BLS programs, data are published at the national level and are used in a variety of ways by economists, policy makers, business people, and private citizens. Some of our programs also publish data for smaller geographic units so customers can focus on regional, state, or local trends. For example, BLS publishes separate unemployment rates for the U.S., for Texas, and for San Antonio. We also have a national wage rate for registered nurses, as well as wage rates for registered nurses in California and in Los Angeles.

State and Local Employment The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program provides detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and over 400 metropolitan areas and divisions. State and Local Unemployment Rates The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program produces monthly and annual employment, unemployment, and labor force data for geographic regions and divisions, States, counties, metropolitan areas, and many cities, by place of residence. Monthly unemployment statistics for States, counties, and metropolitan areas are available in map format; see
