home about us contact Geography is an exciting field that spans the sciences, the social sciences and the humanities and has something to offer every kind of imagination. In earth systems science we study natural processes, their interactions, and both naturally and human-generated environmental issues. In the social sciences we study a variety of social problems, with a special focus on the uneven distribution of resources and services at scales from the local to the global. In humanities research we explore how human beings have made, and continue to make, the places (physical, social and metaphorical) in which they live. In all these areas Queen’s Geography has scholars and teachers of international repute who are dedicated to making a dynamic and innovative research and teaching environment and a warm and supportive interpersonal environment for our students and faculty.

UI Geography Professors return from Tamil Nadu, India Over winter break, UI Geography Professors R. Rajagopal and Ed Brands led a team of 23 Iowans for a 3-week period to Tamil Nadu, India to study social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurs are described as "new heroes," people who often work against the odds to find solutions where others only see problems (e.g. poverty and unemployment, environmental problems, lack of infrastructure).  Read more by clicking here Professor Kumar receives CHEEC Grant Dr. Naresh Kumar recently received a seed grant from the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC) to develop indirect methods of estimating indoor and outdoor air quality in Iowa City area. The UI press release may be read by clicking here More news and events... Welcome to Geography at Iowa! We live on a dynamic planet, one that is constantly changing in response to complex human and natural processes. Geographers study the interactions of people with each other and their environment to better understand these intricately related processes.
At The University of Iowa, we conduct research and teach students about social and biophysical systems and the events that shape the world in which we live. Our focus is on understanding these dynamics with a special emphasis on human-environment interactions as well as the science and the technologies that are needed to analyze, model, and visualize geographic processes.

Covering an area of 3.28 million sq kms it is the seventh largest country in the world. The mainland of India extends between 8º 4' N and 37º 6’ North Latitude and 68º 7’ and 97º 25’East Longitudes. The Tropic of Cancer 23º 30’ N divides India almost into two halves. The land frontier of the country is 15, 200 km and the total length of the coastline is over 7, 500 kms. Indian peninsula tapers southward resulting in the division of the Indian Ocean into two expanse of water – the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. There is a great diversity of landforms such as lofty mountains, deep valleys, extensive plains, wide plates and a number of islands. Broadly the physical features of India can be divided into five physical units - The Great Mountains of the North, The North Indian Plain, The Peninsular Plateau, The Coastal Plains, and The Islands.

The diverse discipline of geography exposes students to the multitude of ways in which geographers study the world. Geographers study human-environment interactions and their spatially varying expression. Numerous tools and techniques are employed in geographic research including cartography (the art and science of map making and use), geographic information systems (GIS), satellite imagery and air photo interpretation, surveys, and mathematical modeling and statistical analysis.
