Note 1 : an arrow indicates an inheritance like a compatibility, it is not only a matter of source code
Note 2 : this diagram shows complete systems and [micro]kernels like Mach, Linux, the Hurd... This is because sometimes kernel versions are more appropriate to see the evolution of the system. Note 3 : I have now a page where I explain how I build this chart.

The Far East has its Mecca, Palestine its Jersualem, France its Lourdes, and Italy its Loretto, but America's only shrines are her altars of patriotism - the first and most potent being Jamestown; the sire of Virginia, and Virginia the mother of this great Republic. from a 1907 Virginia guidebook
In June of 1606, King James I granted a charter to a group of London entrepreneurs, the Virginia Company , to establish a satellite English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. By December, 104 settlers sailed from London instructed to settle Virginia, find gold and a water route to the Orient. Some traditional scholars of early Jamestown history believe that those pioneers could not have been more ill-suited for the task. Because Captain John Smith identified about half of the group as "gentlemen", it was logical, indeed, for historians to assume that these gentry knew nothing of or thought it beneath their station to tame a wilderness. Recent historical and archaeological research at the site of Jamestown suggest that at least some of the gentlemen and certainly many of the artisans, craftsmen, and laborers that accompanied them all made every effort to make the colony succeed.

weblogs: a history and perspective
7 september 2000 In 1998 there were just a handful of sites of the type that are now identified as weblogs (so named by Jorn Barger in December 1997). Jesse James Garrett, editor of Infosift , began compiling a list of "other sites like his" as he found them in his travels around the web. In November of that year, he sent that list to Cameron Barrett. Cameron published the list on Camworld , and others maintaining similar sites began sending their URLs to him for inclusion on the list. Jesse's ' page of only weblogs ' lists the 23 known to be in existence at the beginning of 1999. Suddenly a community sprang up. It was easy to read all of the weblogs on Cameron's list, and most interested people did. Peter Merholz announced in early 1999 that he was going to pronounce it 'wee-blog' and inevitably this was shortened to 'blog' with the weblog editor referred to as a 'blogger.' At this point, the bandwagon jumping began. More and more people began publishing their own weblogs. I began mine in April of 1999. Suddenly it became difficult to read every weblog every day, or even to keep track of all the new ones that were appearing. Cameron's list grew so large that he began including only weblogs he actually followed himself. Other webloggers did the same. In early 1999 Brigitte Eaton compiled a list of every weblog she knew about and created the Eatonweb Portal . Brig evaluated all submissions by a simple criterion: that the site consist of dated entries. Webloggers debated what was and what was not a weblog, but since the Eatonweb Portal was the most complete listing of weblogs available, Brig's inclusive definition prevailed.

The Rice University History Department understands its function to be twofold: to create knowledge about the past through research and to disseminate historical knowledge through publishing and teaching. Underlying these functions is the conviction that by confronting the past in a serious way we will broaden understanding of the universals of the human condition and deepen understanding of the local and personal. At the same time we provide instruction in broadly applicable skills, such as logical argument, clear writing, and research ability. Because research, publishing, and teaching are mutually supportive, we attempt to bring each ingredient into as many student experiences as we can. Our faculty of twenty-two offers interactive instruction based on these principles to approximately one hundred undergraduate history majors and about thirty graduate students. To find out more about the opportunities in history at Rice explore the links on the left.
