For the journal, see Psychological Science (journal) Not to be confused with Phycology Psychology (from Greek: ψυχή, psychē soul ", "self" or "mind"; and λόγος, logos , "speech" lit. "to talk about the psyche") is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behavior . There is some tension between scientific psychology (with its program of empirical research) and applied psychology (dealing with a number of areas). Psychologists attempt to explain the mind and brain in the context of real life, in contrast to the physiological approach used by neurologists . Psychologists study such phenomena as perception cognition emotion personality ... behavior , and interpersonal relationships . Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity , including issues related to daily life —e.g. family education , and work —and the treatment of mental health problems.

Chunking - Psychology Definition of the Week
Definition: A term referring to the process of taking individual units of information (chunks) and grouping them into larger units. Probably the most common example of chunking is phone numbers. For example, a phone number sequence of 4-7-1-1-3-2-4 would be chunked into 471-1324. Chunking is often a useful tool when memorizing large amounts of information. By separating disparate individual elements into larger blocks, information becomes easier to retain and recall. You can learn more about chunking by reading this overview of memory . Elements of Crisis Counseling
We often think of a crisis as a sudden unexpected catastrophe, such as a car accident, natural disaster, or other cataclysmic event. In mental health terms, a crisis refers not necessarily to a traumatic situation or event, but to a person’s reaction to this event. A crisis can result from a sudden upheaval, such as unemployment, divorce or the death of a loved one and reactions to these events can vary widely from person to person. Reactions to a crisis can vary widely, with some showing few ill effects while others experiences symptoms including anger, flashbacks and social withdrawal. Research has shown that

Welcome! Psychology is a huge, fascinating field of study
, and faculty here are interested in such wide-ranging topics as children's development of language and social awareness; how genes interact with the environment to produce both adaptive and maladaptive behavior; basic emotions, ranging from anger to compassion and awe; how culture shapes the ways in which people view the world; causes and treatments for mental disorders like ADHD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, as well as dementias; social groups, conformity, dissent, and prejudice; and human memory and the ways in which we perceive and act in the world. These only scratch the surface of the interdisciplinary, cutting-edge work that we do. I encourage you to view the many links here to learn about our research labs and faculty projects, undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, and our wonderful staff." - Stephen Hinshaw , Psychology Department Chair
