Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies
The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of specializations within the study of religion. With particular strengths in the study of Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the African-American religious experience, the department emphasizes descriptive, historical, critical and theoretical approaches to the study of religion. The department maintains close ties with a large number of other programs and institutes at the University of Pennsylvania and beyond, and provides students with access to a wealth of library, museum and linguistic resources. At the same time, Penn's Department of Religious Studies is a small body in which students receive a great deal of individual attention from faculty members and the opportunity to interact with students from diverse subfields. Within this context of extensive resources and personalized guidance, each student works with an advisor to design his or her own course of study. Penn's Department of Religious Studies has been a pioneer in the incorporation of computer technology in the humanities.

A variety of options are available given that some programs study many religions, while other programs focus very specifically on a particular religion or set of beliefs. Advanced degrees in religion can be offered by seminaries in preparation for pastoral or teaching roles, but other institutions also offer advanced degrees in religion for those that wish to pursue other careers and feel that a comprehensive knowledge of religious studies would be helpful. Religious studies can be approached from a viewpoint of looking at the historical or the modern. Related fields may include

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Religious Studies
The religious studies program contributes significantly to two majors at Alfred University: Comparative Cultures and Philosophy. Philosophy of Religion is one of two tracks in the philosophy major. Faculty in religious studies have joined with anthropology and non-western art history to create the increasingly popular comparative cultures major. Because religious beliefs, rituals and values bear upon all aspects of human life, the study of religions complements majors in many areas. The study of religions contributes to careers in humanities, social sciences, and the arts and it enhances career opportunities in such diverse areas as international affairs, journalism, business, social work, counseling, communications, the health professions, education, and, of course, the ministry. Therefore students in many parts of the university minor in religious studies. Headline News Bergren Forum to feature everything about wildflowers Cheryld Emmons, associate professor of biology at Alfred University, will present “How to identify a wildflower, and why you would want to,” on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Bergren Forum at 12:10 p.m. at Powell Campus Centers’ Nevins Theatre. This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Religious Studies Religion has been one of the most important, inspirational, and, arguably, problematic aspects of human culture. At Lawrence, the religious studies department seeks to educate students about the diversity, complexity, and richness of the historical and philosophical dimensions of some of the world’s religions. Because we recognize that religion lies not in one aspect of human culture and experience, but permeates all aspects, students become familiar with a variety of approaches needed to study the wide range of religious expression. Thus, religious studies at Lawrence is both comparative and inter-disciplinary in its approach. Courses in Christianity, religions of Asia, and Islam form the core offerings of the department in which you examine cultural and social expressions of those religions – sacred texts, rituals, instances of ecstasy and enthusiasm, reflective writings, and institutions – at a particular period, over time, and in relation to broader historical, philosophical, and ethical issues.

Department of Religious Studies
The Religious Studies Department at Nazareth College is a community of scholars who engage in the academic study of religion, educate one another about religion, and promote the public understanding of religion. Faculty members of the department pursue their own specialized and constructive study of religion, direct the learning of students, and contribute to the broad civic conversation about religion. Student members of the department may follow a rigorous major program of study in order to become proficient in the field of Religious Studies, or complete a minor program in Religious Studies in order to complement a major in some other field, or take a limited number of courses in specific areas of personal interest. The Department understands its subject matter to be all of the religious traditions of the world and regards religion as a vital, experiential dimension of human culture to be appreciated in its many expressions and various social-historical contexts. The Department holds that the study of religion is properly interdisciplinary, comparative and employs a host of methodological approaches.

Welcome Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies home page. We hope that many people will find it interesting, and invite you to browse. But we particularly hope to draw the interest of Vanderbilt students who are interested in the field or are considering Religious Studies as a major or minor.
Religious Studies is a fascinating discipline in the humanities. Religion has been an important part of culture for millennia, and touches on many aspects of human life: psychology, anthropology, sociology, history, and, of course, the spiritual. Religious Studies courses will give any student a wide-ranging education and cultivate the ability to think critically.
No student in Religious Studies is ever asked to make a statement of faith, although we welcome those whose interest is sparked by a particular faith tradition. We present varied opportunities for a student to study his or her own tradition or to learn about one that is very different.
We especially invite you to consider Religious Studies as a major or minor. A liberal arts education will provide you with a solid foundation for many kinds of work in the future, and a major or minor from Vanderbilt will also serve you well if you plan either professional or graduate schooling in religion.
