What this handout is about
This handout introduces you to the wonderful world of writing sociology. Before you can write a clear and coherent sociology paper, you need a firm understanding of the assumptions and expectations of the discipline. You need to know your audience, the way they view the world and how they order and evaluate information. So, without further ado, let's figure out just what sociology is, and how one goes about writing it.
What is sociology, and what do sociologists write about?
So, just what is a sociological perspective? At its most basic, sociology is an attempt to understand and explain the way that individuals and groups interact within a society. How exactly does one approach this goal? C. Wright Mills, in his book The Sociological Imagination (1959), writes that "neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both." Why? Well, as Karl Marx observes at the beginning of

Sociology is the systematic study of societies: their composition, organization, culture, and development. The Department of Sociology at UCSD is unique in that most of its faculty work in three fields: comparative-historical sociology, the sociology of culture, and the sociology of science, technology, and medicine. In addition, the department offers basic training in social theory, and quantitative and qualitative methodologies. A further distinguishing feature of this department is that a large proportion of its members are engaged in the study of foreign countries: their institutions, culture, interactions with other nations, development, and change. UCSD sociologists do research not only on the United States, but also on societies in Africa, Latin America, East Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

Fifty Years and Counting: The Wisconsin Longitudinal Study
Lee Schoenecker doesn't recall filling out a survey 50 years ago about his plans after high school, yet this long-forgotten event has stayed with him ever since. Because of it, the retired urban planner has spent many more hours being surveyed both by telephone and written questionnaire. He recently provided a sample of DNA. Even his wife and siblings have become involved.

Welcome
by admin-oasis last modified Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . Founded in 1920 by Howard W. Odum, our department has played a prominent role in the development of sociology as a major field of study in the social sciences. Several years after founding the department, Odum also founded Social Forces , a journal that continues to play a leading role in the dissemination of groundbreaking social research. Since the 1930s, when we were judged "distinguished" by the American Council of Education, we have been regarded as among the most productive, innovative, and respected sociology departments in the United States. Current and past faculty members have been important figures in regional, national, and international social science, including Peter Blau, Hubert Blalock, Glen Elder, Amos Hawley, Gerhard Lenski, and Tony Oberschall. Seven former members of our department and alumni have served as presidents of the American Sociological Association. Arne Kalleberg is currently serving as ASA president.

NEWS David Grusky/The Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality launches magazine called Pathways to highlight policy debates about wealth and poverty in America. Although many popular magazines focus on how to increase economic output, there are far fewer addressing policies affecting the distribution of that output, according to center Director David Grusky. In the introduction to the first issue of Pathways, senior editors Grusky and Chris Wimer write that the magazine is
"dedicated to the proposition that there are important policy decisions to be made about the distribution of output, even if we sometimes refuse to see them. As with policymaking on total economic output, there are paths taken and paths not taken, and our job is to foster a discussion of those choices."
