How do we manage to get along?
We organize as a society in the hope of avoiding conflict and chaos - but often society seems to cause as many problems as it solves! What forces give rise to both good and bad in our lives together? How do social forces affect our personal lives? Is society doomed, or can we act on society's problems? Courses in sociology will give you the knowledge and skills to understand how society shapes your life - and how you can shape society. Faculty and Staff Sociology faculty are committed to offering students a first-rate education... Course Descriptions The department offers a wide range of courses reflecting traditional sociological offerings and more...

last updated Welcome to the Department of Sociology's website. Here you will find information on our people and programs. Department members are actively engaged in research in sociology and criminology while maintaining a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education.
Historically, comparative sociology (often focusing on Latin America) and criminology have been major strengths of the Department. This is still the case, but Department interests are also wider ranging: gender, work and organizations, social movements, race and ethnicity, the Southwest, medical sociology, and social welfare are areas of great faculty and student interest. A variety of other areas are represented among our faculty and students as well. The Department offers graduate (MA and PhD) degrees in sociology, undergraduate (BA) degrees in sociology and criminology, and an undergraduate minor in social welfare. Please use the links at left to learn more about our faculty and our graduate and undergraduate degree programs. For general comments or questions, please write to

sociology (Riverside, CA)

Sociology is a science dedicated to understanding the social universe, from the micro-dynamics of human emotions to the larger processes involved in the creation of social institutions, corporate organizations, and large-scale industrialized societies. To give Sociology majors a firm understanding of the field, the UCR department of sociology offers courses covering a broad spectrum of topics including; ethnicity, race and class inequality, gender, social stratification, sociology of education, the city and urban problems, the environment, sociology of religion, as well as crime and deviance. Course topics also include sociology of human and primate societies, formal and large organizations, the family, political organizations, language diversity in the United States, evolutionary sociology and social psychology. The Sociology undergraduate program has two major goals: to promote undergraduate excellence and to advance career success for students after graduation. To this end, Department staff and faculty provide students with individual attention and guidance. In addition, structured and diversified courses foster analytical and critical thinking. The Department is known for outstanding teaching evaluations, research, and for the commitment of its full professors to teaching lower division courses in social problems, inequality in American society, and especially the introduction to sociology.

T he Department of Sociology at the University of Virginia is committed to a program of research and teaching that is both firmly grounded in the classical tradition of the discipline and addressed to contemporary issues. The Department's intellectual distinction is based on work that is macro-sociological, theoretically driven, and empirically grounded. To take some representative examples, current scholarship includes analyses of the culture wars, the major trends of the century, stratification systems in American high schools, consequences of welfare reform, the rebirth of nationalism, the meaning and effects of marriage, scientific networks, and organizational change efforts. While theoretically varied, our work is fully empirical and draws on a broad array of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Members of the Department are also committed to the enhancement of interdisciplinary approaches. Department of Sociology

Welcome to the Department of Sociology at the University of Akron. Presently, we are a dynamic and productive community of faculty staff and students . At the undergraduate level, we offer two baccalaureate degrees: sociology and sociology/criminology and law enforcement. Approximately 60 percent of our 500 active majors are in criminology and law enforcement. In addition to graduate study in sociology and law school, our graduates have secured careers as Federal agents (e.g. U.S. Secret Service, the FBI), marketing, sales, public administration, community development, and health care. At the graduate level, both faculty and students specialize in four areas: criminology/deviance; inequality; medical sociology/mental health, and social psychology. Our research covers, among others, such topics as immigration; homicide; emotional labor; the life course, alcoholism and drug abuse; interpersonal and family violence; race; gender; organizational deviance; work and mental health. Our M.A. and Ph.D. graduates work in the public and private sector, along with teaching at universities and colleges throughout the country. Please look through our web page to learn more about the department. I encourage prospective undergraduate and graduate students to e-mail or visit.

Over a quarter century ago columnist Lewis Lapham made the following observation: There no longer exists a theater of ideas in which artists or philosophers can perform the acts of the intellectual or moral imagination. In nineteenth-century England Charles Darwin could expect On The Origin of Species to be read by Charles Dickens as well as by Disraeli and the vicar in the shires who collected flies and water beetles. Dickens and Disraeli and the vicar could assume that Mr. Darwin might chance to read their own observations. But in the United States in 1979 what novelist can expect his work to be read by a biochemist, a Presidential candidate, or a director of corporations; what physicist can expect his work to be noticed, much less understood, in the New York literary salons? ("A Juggernaut of Words," Harper's Magazine , June 1979: pp. 12-13). Conditions have hardly improved three decades later. Now in the supposed "Information Age" six out of ten American households do not purchase a single book and one-half of American adults do not read one. Forty-three years ago in 1965 when the Gallup Organization asked young people if they read a daily newspaper, 67 percent said yes; in 2006, according to the
