An Insider's Race Profile
Join adventure racer Brad Pennington as he competes in the X-Adventure in Western Australia for a place in the world-championship showdown in Argentina later next month. Even though expedition-style races keep getting tougher, they've also spawned shorter adventure races for those looking to get their feet wet without the oozing blisters and sleep deprivation of a multi-day expedition. Most events now are beginner-friendly sprint races, averaging three or four hours, says Troy Farrar, director of the United States Adventure Racing Association. "It's a great stepping stone for people that can really give them the adventure-racing bug," he says.
Pioneer: Rebecca Rusch
But the Chicago native wasn't a newbie to adventure sports. A college runner, Rusch got talked into doing her first adventure-racing camp while working at a climbing gym in Los Angeles, and had spent years as a river and climbing guide. Now based in Ketchum, Idaho, Rusch and team will hit ten competitions in 2004 in places from Borneo to the Canary Islands.
Her next main event: the 2004 Raid World Championships in Argentina at the end of November, where she and her team are looking to retain their title. "Winning isn't everything," she says, but last year's victory "was definitely a pat on the back, like we were doing the right thing."

Adventure Racing
History
Gerard Fusil, a French journalist and explorer, in 1989 created a race that he called the Raid Gauloises (literally "French Race" but usually anglicized as "Challenge of the Warriors"). In the process he invented a sport that has become generally known as adventure racing, though it's also sometimes called expedition racing or multi-sport endurance racing. The original race was held in New Zealand. It was a ten-day event covering more than 500 kilometers through rainforest and over mountains, with teams of four to five persons each traveling by mountain bike, canoe, and on foot. Subsequent Raids were stages in Costa Rica in 1990; New Caledonia in 1991; the deserts of Oman in 1992; Madagascar in 1993; Borneo in 1994; and the mountains of Patagonia in 1995. They were all based on Fusil's idea of simulating an expedition over a variety of terrain, requiring endurance and navigational skills and using non-motorized transport. Mark Burnett captained the first American team to compete, in 1992. He also captained teams the next two years and, in 1995, he decided to bring adventure racing to America. Burnett and Brian Terkelsen, a former New York investment banker, teamed to conduct a 1995 adventure race in southeast Utah, the Eco-Challenge. Later that year, a second Eco-Challenge race was held in New England. Later races were staged in British Columbia, Canada (1996); Queensland, Australia (1997); Morocco (1998); Patagonia, Argentina (1999); Sabah, Malaysian Borneo (2000); New Zealand (2001); and Fiji (2002).

Adventure Racing
Adventure racing is a combination of two or more disciplines, including orienteering and navigation, cross-country running, mountain biking, paddling and climbing and related rope skills. An expedition event can span ten days or more, while sprints can be completed in a matter of hours. Typically there is no dark period during races, regardless of their length - the choice of when and/or if to rest is left to the competitors. A sell out event with 101 teams of 3, involved in running, riding, kayaking and navigating their way from checkpoint to checkpoint, made the Sydney Olympic Park AROC Adventure the biggest sprint length adventure race ever held in the Southern Hemisphere. The race took competitiors across numerous parts of Sydney Olympic Park through modes which involved navigation and orienteering of Bicentennial Park before a bike ride via some scenic checkpoints around Sydney Olympic Park then heading to the Sydney Olympic Park Wharf. Negotiating the River Cat wash, teams paddled up Parramatta River to Kissing Point where they for the time being left their boats to collect a few more checkpoints on foot, a slide down the slippery dip, a climb up the rope tower and then back to their boats and paddle back to Sydney Olympic Park for another bike ride and clearing checkpoints to be the first team back to the Overflow.

Life is (Not Always) An Adventure Race: The StumpJump 50K
"Life Is (Not Always) An Adventure Race – Our First UltraMarathon" by Jim Farmer, October 2003
This is the second year for the Stump Jump 50K Trail Run put on by Rock/Creek as a benefit for the Cumberland Trail Conference. Appropriately, it takes place mostly on the Cumberland Trail, starting at Shackleford Ridge Park near Edward’s Point and making its way across Suck Creek Road and into the main part of the Prentice Cooper State Forest. Fortunately, they also offer an eleven-mile option for the people that don’t spend most of their time in straight jackets. That’s what my wife, Carol, and I decided to undertake last year but, for some reason, we felt the call of the wild and decided to tackle the 50K this time around. It made perfect sense since neither of us had ever done a marathon or anything close to it and this was going to be almost thirty-three miles on technical single-track trails with several thousand feet of elevation change.
Now you may ask what kind of freaky new-age logic this conforms to. To that I have no response. Although neither of us was really ready for this kind of distance we had spent quite a bit of time running the trails in the area to get ready for this epic romp. Carol had single-handedly boosted Rock Creek’s sales projections for the next year by trying just about every women’s trail runner they had before finally settling on a pair. Of course, I can’t talk, given the rooms full of gear purchased for my various adventures. That, and the fact that if you run then you can’t spend too much money on your feet.
