Aikido is often translated as "the Way of unifying (with) life energy or as "the Way of harmonious spirit." Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. Aikido techniques are normally performed by "blending" with the motion of the attacker, rather than directly opposing the attack. The aikidoka (aikido practitioner) redirects the attacker's momentum , using minimal effort, with various types of throws or joint locks Aikido can be categorized under the general umbrella of grappling arts.

Welcome to the web site of the United States Aikido Federation (USAF), a non-profit educational institution created for the purpose of spreading and maintaining the integrity of the Japanese martial art of Aikido, as exemplified and developed by its Founder, Master Morihei Ueshiba, and as disseminated by the Aikikai Foundation, Aikido Hombu Dojo, the Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. About the USAF
The main aims of the USAF are to develop and guide the practice and instruction of Aikido as established by Hombu, to promote and develop good will, fellowship and lines of communication among its members, to standardize gradings , to register dan (senior level) grades with Hombu, and to establish and maintain close contact with the Shihan (master teachers) officially dispatched as representatives by Hombu. To accomplish this, the USAF organizes, promotes and conducts Aikido demonstrations and seminars, encourages activities of member dojos, and researches, studies and publishes information and materials pertaining to Aikido.

How many hobbies will last for that long, and remain fascinating? Normally I am impatient, to say the least. Anything that I have to repeat over and over, will very quickly lose its attraction. Not so with aikido , the gentle martial art from Japan. I keep on doing those exercises, keep on struggling to refine the techniques - and my fascination increases. This is an anomaly, a

Aikido Information Page has moved
Last update: Monday, November 15, 1999 It was my pleasure to have served the Internet Aikido community through the FTP Aikido Archives and the Aikido Information Page. Due to other obligations, I no longer have time to properly maintain the links on the Aikido Information page. Jun Akiyama has generously agreed to absorb the links that were formerly on this page on his AikiWeb site. He had already been doing much by taking over maintenance of the FTP Aikido dojo directory (still housed at this site.) The Japanese martial art of Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Please add the new central source for information about Aikido to your bookmarks: http://www.aikiweb.com November 15, 1999 - old Aikido Journal material removed, please check the new Aikido Journal website: www.aikidojournal.com Onegaishimasu! Cynthia S. Paloma
What's left:
Aikido archives (FTP) In December 1991 I inherited an FTP dojo directory list from Robert N. Truel. I used to maintain all this information, but have since delegated maintenance to others who volunteered their time, energy and enthusiasm to promote the art of Aikido. All the information at the FTP site is also available in HTML format at Jun Akiyama's AikiWeb site, so this is primarily intended for those with no or slow Web access.

City aikido has the most experienced teachers in the bay area, including Robert Nadeau.
http://www.cityaikido.com/
SUMMER CAMP 2008 - MENLO COLLEGE - JUNE 8 - 14
CHIEF INSTRUCTOR
Robert Nadeau 7th Dan, Shihan has been a teacher of Aikido for over 35 years. He studied directly with the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, at Hombu Dojo (Headquarters School) in Tokyo. Nadeau Sensei teaches regularly at City Aikido on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Aikido, a martial art grounded in a non-violent philosophy, also increases body awareness, energy flow, and ease of movement. There are no contests in Aikido; one trains with a partner, not an opponent. Confronting oneself, connecting with a partner, it is no surprise many people consider aikido a spiritual as well as a martial practice. The teaching staff at City Aikido is the most experienced in the Bay Area. We offer classes 7 days a week, with a schedule that includes morning, noon, and evening sessions. Visitors are encouraged to come in and watch a class, and ask questions of any instructors or students.

Aikido is a non-violent, and non-competitive Japanese martial art which emphasizes blending, neutralizing, and controlling the force of an attack. Students are taught to relax, focus energy, concentrate and move in harmony with a partner. Negative power from an attack is not met with conflict, but joined, interpreted, and redirected through the power of spiral movement. Because Aikido does not depend on physical strength, it is especially attractive to men and women of all ages.
