82. WDFW -- Angling Education Program
Using volunteers to teach safe, ethical angling skills; leading to a better understanding and protection of our aquatic resources.

Using volunteers to teach safe, ethical angling skills;
leading to a better understanding and protection of our aquatic resources.
The Angling Education Program recruits the next generation of stewards of our aquatic resource, by training volunteers to teach safe and ethical angling skills to youth (and adults as well.) The Angling Education Program focuses on five basic assumptions: 1. A thorough knowledge of fish and fishing is the first step in a lifelong learning and growing process. Program objectives are to teach:
  • Popular types of coldwater and warmwater gamefish
  • The need for proper species identification
  • The minimum necessities to catch fish
  • Common types of fishing rods and reels
  • Different types of fishing line and how they are classified
  • Different types of terminal tackle
  • The difference between "bait" and "lure"
  • How to tie knots
  • How to add weight to a line
  • How to attach a float to the line
  • How to cast
2. Sportsmanship and ethics are the keys to continued fishing enjoyment. Program objectives are to teach:
  • What catch-and-release fishing is and why it is important
  • How to release fish unharmed
  • The rights of landowners and the responsibilities of anglers to get permission
  • The rights of other anglers
  • The written and unwritten rules of fishing
  • What litter is and why it is harmful
  • The difference between sportsmanlike and unsportsmanlike conduct while fishing
  • The role of individuals in protecting fish and aquatic resources
  • The contributions of anglers in preserving aquatic resources

Waters Open to Year-Round Hook and Line Angling
During the 2008-2009 season, hook and line fishing is open all year in these waters for all fish species except muskellunge, lake sturgeon, trout, paddlefish and threatened or endangered fish, and as otherwise noted in the Special County Regulations for the waterbody where you plan to fish. Experimental waters of the Northern Highland Fisheries Research Area are open all but 5 days of the year.
Special County Regulations
Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Special County Regulations for the county and waterbody you plan to fish. For many of these year-round fishing opportunities there are some specific rules on species, sizes, and bag limits.

Carrie Brownstein Angling For A Job At Maxim
After citing Maxim 's no-listen review of the new Black Crowes LP, blogger-Kinney launches into a couple of her own. Carrie goes deep on Kaki King's Dreaming Of Revenge : "'Life Being What It Is' is King at his best, while 'Open Mouth' is King even better than he usually is. 'Air and Kilometers' is a beautiful song about traveling in a plane in a country that uses the metric system and 'Montreal' is about a city in Canada." Also she notes that Wye Oak's If Children is "Whitney Houston's 'The Greatest Love Of All' except angrier and totally against mid-wives." We'd hire her! But both Maxim and Carrie need to remember that when it comes to phony reviews David Cross is not afraid of you and will beat your ass

A Chapter of Trout Unlimited
Welcome to the Gunnison Chapter of Trout Unlimited
Our chapter was chartered on December 5, 1969. We are a relatively small chapter with about 140 to 150 members, about half of whom are from outside the state of Colorado. Our local members are mostly residents of Gunnison, Almont and Crested Butte. We have been a fairly active chapter and have several special events and activities over the course of the year. We have won awards from Colorado Trout Unlimited with some of our previous projects such as collecting dead kokanee salmon to prevent the spread of whirling disease and using electro-shocking to collect insect samples from streams. Here are some of our activities: Superfly Projects Awards
