Modern Arnis is the system of Filipino martial arts founded by the late Remy Presas as a self-defense system. His goal was to create an injury-free training method as well as an effective self-defense system in order to preserve the older Arnis systems. The term Modern Arnis was also used by Remy Presas' younger brother Ernesto Presas to describe his style of Filipino martial arts ; since 1999 Ernesto Presas has called his system Kombatan . It is derived principally from the traditional Presas family style of the Bolo (machete) and the stick-dueling art of Balintawak , with influences from other Filipino and Japanese martial arts.

Many of them have never been seen before and nearly all of them are presented in glorious 600px Flash format the sharpest we could create for this website. We are currently uploading a lot of GM Remy Presas instructional sessions from back in the day. This is very useful and exciting stuff and recommended viewing for all modern arnis and FMA practitioners. We are finalizing the dates for two new modern arnis seminars and they are scheduled for early June. The first seminar to be held possibly the first week of June will be a MARPPIO sponsored seminar featuring Kelly Worden and Remy Presas Jr.

Arnis: A Question of Origins
by Bot Jocano The term arnis evokes a number of reactions from people every time it is mentioned in a conversation. Some people start fanning their hands in the air, imitating the distinctive movements of the two-stick (doble baston) training method. This image of arnis is one of the most popular to the layman. A second reaction, and quite as common as the first, is the question: "Saan ba talaga galing ang arnis?" (Where did arnis really come from?) Alternatively, "Di ba, sa atin nanggaling ang arnis?î (Isn't it that arnis comes from us?) is a question also heard. This article is an attempt to critically examine the roots of one of the martial arts of the Philippines, arnis. It must be noted that in no way does this article claim to be the final say on the origins of arnis. It is actually a preliminary look, a start if you will, into re-examining carefully the origins of an art form. Arnis, also known as

Not until the sixties, that non-Filipinos were allowed to witness and learn the Filipino combative arts. It was normally passed down within a family, or on a strict student-to-student basis. By Maestro Joe Jimenez Arnis de Mano cannot be verbally described to get a true sense of it's dynamics. It must be experienced. Like a song, it requires a sense of rhythm and flow. If you can't communicate the rhythm and melody, one cannot relate to the music.
Arnis de Mano (harness or armor of the hand) movements are angular and circular. Motion is continuous, that is those who have acquired or mastered the flow. Maestro JoJo Abueg has the most remarkable flow that I have witnessed.
Don't look for crashing boisterous movement or sound. Arnis de Mano is more surgically applied thus the old Filipino adage "de-fanging the snake".
Although noted for its weaponry, Arnis de Mano is more. If you can understand the concepts of the use of a weapon, then you can relate the same principles to empty hand or "kun tao" (way of the hand). In its full curriculum of training it has footwork, weaponry, empty hands, power, flow, rhythm, and dance.

The World Modern Arnis Alliance was established for a two-fold purpose. Our first goal is to further the growth of Arnis throughout the world. Secondly, in keeping with the example set by Remy Presas, our intent is to set the highest technical standards possible for the global Arnis community. We will achieve this by designing specific training programs that will advance the progression of our art while developing maximum student proficiency. For those who do not have immediate access to an instructor and who are training on their own, rank promotion is still possible. Students will have access to a directory of black belts, schools, and instructors in the Modern Arnis community. These people will be available to periodically assist students with their training in preparation for their advancement. Geographical constraints will not be a deterrent to the growth of Modern Arnis. In addition we have created a "Student Registry" so that each member will have a record of their rank as they progress through each level. This will prevent any discrepancy as to what belt level a student or instructor has earned. Their credentials will be available for verification.

Arnis: Filipino Stick Fighting What is Arnis: Filipino Martial Arts? Arnis (pronounced "our niece") is a Philippine martial arts system of martial arts that employs rattan sticks, blade weapons and the empty hands no weapons. While Arnis is primarily considered a weapons art, it incorporates empty hand techniques based upon the same movements used with the weapons. Arnis does not merely combine techniques, the student is encouraged to adapt the principles to one's own feel for each technique and any previous trainingmartial arts, dance or other body movement disciplines. For this reason, Arnis is referred to as "The Art Within Your Art." The Arnis Training The study of Arnis is the study of coordinating the body to be in full harmony. Students start training with the sticks immediately which enhances the learning process and gives the student a tremendous increase in eye/hand coordination and a special gracefulness known in Arnis as "The Flow". From the very first class, students learn to activate muscles and integrate their effectiveness so that movement will come from the effort of the body in unison, not just isolated muscle power. With practice, movements powered by a fully integrated body gain dramatically in both strength and speed. The self-defense aspect of Arnis incorporates the grappling art of trapping hands, takedowns and low-level kicks.

Brief Arnis History Information
Arnis is an ancient Filipino Martial Arts also known as Kali or Eskrima. Originally known as Arnis de Mano, or harness of the hand, the art incorporated empty handed fighting as well as techniques with a variety of weapons specializing in short sticks and knife techniques. During the Spanish occupation of the Philippines, the practice of Arnis was banned. However, in order to preserve the art the Filipino people hid the techniques in their folk dancing. They later used the art to defeat the Spaniards and free their land from Spanish rule over 300 years ago.
Jay Haynes Information
Shihan Haynes originally began his Arnis training under Guro Eric Alexander in 1991. Eric Alexander is a 5th degree Black Belt under the late Professor Remy Presas. Shihan Haynes trained personally with Guro Alexander and in seminars with Professor Remy Presas, the founder of Modern Arnis, and continued to train until 2006. At that time, Shihan Haynes was introduced by Professor Ken Baker to Grand Master Federico Lazo (who is the founder of Luzviminda Arnis) and his son, Master Ricky Lazo. Shihan was so astounded by the Arnis technique that he learned, that he now studies and teaches the Luzviminda Arnis system.

Arnis sticks are a martial arts weapon for self defense and martial arts training whether for competitions or attack prevention.
Kali, Escrima, and Arnis are the terms for the fighting arts of the Philippines. Kali is a South Term, Escrima more Central, and Arnis is from the North.
Kali Fighting Sticks - Arnis Sticks - are made of lightweight yet durable Filipino Rattan Made. The Kali sticks have been made famous in the Filipino Martial Arts.
The most common weapon used in training is a rattan stick about the length of the practitioner's arm. Some schools prefer sticks of a particular length, while others expect students to learn which techniques are appropriate for a variety of lengths. Other sticks used for training and for some duels are made of hardwood, such as molave or kamagong, that is burned and hardened. The sticks used in Arnis are usually made out of wood, or rattan 70 cm long and about 2 cm in diameter. The length can vary from 30 cm to 220 cm. They can also be made out of aluminum or other metals, or modern high-impact plastics. The sticks can also be padded for training purposes, though this practice is usually only used in schools in North America or Europe. Most North American and European schools use hand and head protection when sparring with rattan sticks.

Remy A. Presas' Modern Arnis
This page is devoted to one of the arts we teach separately at Tye's Kung Fu ; i.e. Modern Arnis . Currently, we offer classes in Remy Presas' Modern Arnis twice weekly:
Sat 7-9pm, and Sun 5-7pm
The location is Montoya's Shorin Kempo Karate School , at 2603 Rountree in Bryan, TX. Modern Arnis and I met years ago, when Guro Eric Alexander (Lakan Tatlo - 3rd degree black belt) gave me my first taste of the art. Since then, I have studied under Professor Remy Presas himself, and have worked out with a few of his close students, including Master Dr. Randi Schea, and Guro Raymond Montoya (Lakan Dalawa - 2nd degree black belt). In 1997, Professor Presas awarded Lakan Dalawa (2nd degree black belt) rank in Modern Arnis. At the request of the Professor, I founded the TAMU Modern Arnis Club here at in 1995. When I teach, I emphasize flow, real-life applications (i.e. convince me this'd work ), disarms and joint-work. I've found that my Modern Arnis training has helped in my understanding and application of kung fu as well - kind of a cross-pollination. One of the single best training tools in GM Presas' system is Tapi-Tapi, with all its variation, free-flowingness, and applications put in - WONDERFUL!
