Autocross events are usually held in large paved areas like parking lots or airfields. Typically, new courses are created for each event so drivers must learn a new course each time they compete.
Prior to driving, a competitor will walk the course, taking mental notes, and developing a strategy to be refined upon subsequent runs. National organizations such as the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and National Auto Sport Association (NASA) sponsor autocross events throughout the United States, and many areas have independent autocross clubs. Automobile manufacturers and their associated clubs (e.g. the BMW Car Club of America) sometimes hold marque autocross events.
This can be the most cost effective way of financing a new vehicle. The interest rate on a home equity line of credit, or a home equity loan, is typically much lower than that charged on any type of auto loan.

Autocrossing a Fiat X1/9
My primary hobby for many years was autocrossing my '81 Fiat X1/9, "Pyrite", and its predecessor, "Colibri", a '79, both of which were prepared for SCCA's D Street Prepared class. (After I painted Pyrite, I always meant to change the name since it was no longer meaningful once the car was no longer gold, but somehow the old name stuck. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions anyway!) I've driven Pyrite to nationals (held in Kansas) twice, and garnered a second-place (DSPL) trophy one of those times. I actually won DSPL once, back in '89, but it was in Bill Condrashoff's X1/9, not my own. Lately, I'm semi-retired and only run occasional local events (I got tired of the long drive to Kansas. :-) Sad news: Pyrite is about to be retired as well. At just short of 250k miles, some of it on the east coast and other snowy areas, the underside of the body is just too rusted out. Current plan is to transplant Pyrite's race parts into a red-over-brown '86 body. I finally got the new car! But what should I name it?

Registration is open for the autocrosses at VMP this Sunday April 6, then Langley Speedway on Sunday May 25.
The new 2008 NASA-X national/regional rules and classing documents have all been posted under "Resources" below! The updated car classing structure applies IMMEDIATELY. Please email nasa-x@get-fast.net if your car class changes and you have already participated with us in '08.
SUMMARY
Autocross is the most entry-level form of sports car racing
and has taken place all over the world since the 1950's. Participants simply drive as fast as possible one at a time against the clock on a twisty course laid out with cones on a large paved surface. Top speeds are usually less than 65 miles per hour because the activity is intended to encourage car control and driver skill at real-world speeds. NASA Mid-Atlantic has held autocrosses since 1998. In 2007 we ran a record 12-event championship and hosted our first autocross school in conjunction with Evolution . Our events are open to any street licensed driver in nearly any street or race car , utilizing a classification system designed to produce close competition. Victory and defeat are often separated by mere thousandths of a second.

Welcome to the Corvair autocross page by Bryan Blackwell
Corvairs have been very successful over the years in autocross racing (also known as slalom racing or Solo 2), and I'm building these pages to help folks have more fun and success in this sport. If you have a question or would like to add or comment on what's already here about Corvair racing, please mail me. I would like to thank all the folks who have contributed so far, it really helps! For those of you who don't know who I am, my name's Bryan Blackwell, and I can usually be found in cyberspace on the Virtual Vairs e-mail list as well. Although the last few years have been devoted to our Greenbrier, I have not forgotten the red Corsa. As of 1 August 2005, the installation of a set of the Underground's new poly front bushings is mostly complete, just need to align the front end. Next up is swapping in the engine from the blue Corsa (the current engine has a badly worn cam gear and questionable compression on #5). Due to the number of pages, I have started marking new pages uploaded within the last month with a "new" icon like this one . Updated pages are denoted by a red bullet like this

http://www.pca.org/autox/
PCA.org : Home AutoCross
What is Autocross?
Autocross is a sport of trying to navigate your car through a defined course of pylons usually on a large parking lot, faster than your competition. Autocross courses are set up using soft orange traffic pylons which will not damage your car, but they do melt!!! Events are run at speeds usually between 40-65 MPH, usually in 2nd gear. Autocross is a "performance driving event" and a safe way to learn how to drive your car at its limit. You not only learn how to handle your car at speeds that you drive daily, but you also:
  • Gain confidence in your driving ability.
  • Learn the limits of your car's brakes
  • Learn correct seating, hand, and feet positions
  • Learn the limits of your car's tire adhesion
Finally, Autocross is a social gathering of new and old friends and LOTS OF FUN!!!

Second autocross
Cars Yesterday was another miserably cold day at Marina. While in Bay Area temperatures finally dropped from the high 90s into low 70s, Marina saw a lot of fog, wind and cold weather. The autocross at Marina was nevertheless very rewarding, this time with a very interesting and challenging course . I ended up 5th in my car's class . While the result was pretty good, I could have done a lot better. The most challenging part is recognizing the mistakes you make and try to avoid them in a consistent manner. This is easier said than done, as the course's features come at you very fast, and a mistake in a turn happens usually because of another one few turns before. So concentration is key, as well as a good understanding of what your car can do. I still have a lot to learn, but it's fun. Posted by ovidiu at June 17, 2007 06:44 PM

HP Plus / Autocross Extremely high coefficient of friction makes HP Plus the perfect upgrade over stock for high performance streetcars used in autocross competition or that experience repetitive, heavy braking. Key Features:
  • Extremely High Friction Output Fade Resistant
Warning! Due to the dramatic friction levels produced by this product to achieve "race-level" braking, rotor wear, noise, dust, and pad life may be affected. All Hawk Performance HP Plus / Autocross brake pads provide a limited lifetime warranty Note:
Hawk Performance burnishes its HP Plus brake pads as a final step in the factory, but all brake pads have to be bedded-in with the rotors (new or used) that they will be used against. Properly bedding-in new brake pads results in a transfer film being generated at the pad and rotor interface to maximize brake performance.

40. Welcome To The MKII MR2 Autocross FAQ
The FAQ covers the basic setup, exploring the most popular ways to maximize the performance of the MR2 in the stock classes.

MKII MR2 Stock Autocross FAQ : This information is presented as is with no claim of accuracy. However, every precaution has been taken to ensure accuracy. Because there are so many different ways to setup the MR2 for autocross, this FAQ is intended to be a general guide only to setting up the MKII MR2 for stock autocrossing. Your setup may differ based on expected course speeds, surface type, weather, and driver preference. Differences in 91-92/93-95 cars and turbo/NA cars will be noted Special thanks to Randy Chase who was a primary contributor. Brad Burns, David Hillman, and Bill Stockton also made significant contributions.. If you have anything to add or correct, please contact me at nathan@mitsi.com Suspension
  • Alignment Crash Bolts are used to help get lots of negative camber in the front. Four crash bolts are used for the front, two per side. Crash bolts are SCCA Stock class legal on the FRONT of the car ONLY, per Toyota Technical Document Volume 10, number 007. Vehicle alignment procedure. Toyota sells three sizes, but for autocross, the smallest one should be used to obtain maximum negative camber. ( Installation Picture When you install crash bolts make sure they are very tight. MR2's are notorious for loosing their negative camber if these are not tight enough. You should tighten the crash bolts to 180-200 ft/lbs to keep them from slipping. Part number for the nut that goes on the crash bolts is 90179-15001. It is recommended that you replace those when you replace the bolts
