The various types of sleds came several years before the first tracks were built in St Moritz , where the original bobsleds were adapted upsized Luge Skeleton sleds designed by the adventurously wealthy to carry passengers. All three types were adapted from boys delivery sleds and toboggans . Competition naturally followed, and to protect the working class and rich visitors in the streets and byways of St Moritz, hotel owner Caspar Badrutt , owner of the historic Krup Hotel and the later Palace Hotel built the first familiarly configured 'half-pipe' track circa 1870. It has hosted the sports during two Olympics and is still in use today.

Venue: "Spiral," the first artificial ice track in Asia, is in the foothills of Mount Iizuna in the Asakawa district in the northern part of Nagano City. The 1,700-meter track has an elevation of 113 meters and encompasses 15 curves. 1994 Golds: Two-man, Switzerland (Gustav Weder and Donat Acklin in 3:30:81); four-man, Germany (Harald Czudaj, Karestan Brannasch, Olaf Hampel, Alexander Szelig; 3:27:78). Critical Moment: Finding the perfect racing line is the key to bobsledding: The driver struggles with a violently shaking bobsled to keep it on the path that gives the fastest time down the run. In turns, the driver must keep the sled high enough to maintain speed but low enough to avoid going extra distance. KRT How It Works: Nuts and Bolts: Speeds can reach 90 miles per hour, and runs take less than a minute. When braking, the crew feels five times the force of gravity. History: Although sleds have been around for centuries, bobsled racing didn't begin until 1877 in Davos, Switzerland, where a steering mechanism was attached to a toboggan.

History
The bobsled was developed in Switzerland late in the 19th century when someone put runners on a toboggan to get greater speed down the famous Cresta Run at St. Moritz. The sport of racing bobsleds down the mountain quickly became popular among British and American visitors. The new sled got its name because early racers thought they could get even more speed by bobbing their bodies backward and forward. They soon realized it didn't work, but the name stuck. The first organized competition in the new sport was held on the Cresta Run on January 5, 1898, with five-passenger sleds. (Two of the passengers had to be women.) For better steering, they were equipped with four runners, positioned on axles much like the four wheels of a car. With the new design, speeds on the mountainside became dangerously fast, so an artificial bobsled run with a gentler slope was built at St. Moritz in 1902. Bobsledding spread rapidly to other Alpine countries. By 1914, when the first European championships took place at St. Moritz, there were more than a hundred bobsled runs in Europe.

Buy our Jamaicans.com Bobsled T-shirt Now!!! Fourteen years ago the first Jamaican Bobsleigh team made history in the Calgary Olympics Winter Games. They warmed the hearts of many worldwide in their first attempt at Olympic glory and was even immortalized in the popular Walt Disney movie "Cool Runnings". Since then the team has been a mainstay in the Winter Olympics and now have their eyes focused on bringing back a medal to Jamaica. In the first games (1988) the team was seen as a novelty as they had many technically difficulties, injuries and crashes. In the second games (1992) the team had drastically improved. They had practiced hard for 4 years and were confident and focused. The 4-man team came in 14th ahead of the US, French, Russian and Italians teams. This was just the beginning. In the 2-man event the Jamaican team shocked the world by beating the Swedish national champions and coming in 10th place. The team has continued to improve and took in 2000, and took gold at the World Push Championships in Monte Carlo in three events and posting the fasted start time at the World Cup.

The Bobsled via Bonneville Shoreline The Bobsled is a famous downhill romp, extending from the Bonneville Shoreline Trail down to the homes of the Avenues. Although it's just one descent option from the BST, this little trail is so famous, it deserves its own web page. This twisting, turning downhill runs in a creekbed, 1000 vertical feet over 1.6 miles. This is strictly a downhill don't even dream of riding uphill on the Bobsled. Riding the loop requires good aerobic capability for the uphill and advanced technical ability for the downhill. (The old entry to the Bobsled had about 1/4 mile of steep loose rock at the beginning. There's a new trail in 2007 about 1000 feet to the east that's much better.) Rob ducks a deadfall as the Bobsled twists and turns. April 30, 2002. UtahMountainBiking.com is your source for bike trail info repair instructions feature articles first aid ... fitness , and goodies Although the BST can be ridden during temporary winter thaws, snow tends to accumulate in the deep shaded canyon of the Bobsled. Once there's a foot or more of snow, you won't be able to get through. There are three ways to get up: via City Creek, via Terrace Hills, or via Dry Gulch and the Popperton paved trail. The most direct of these routes is to grind up paved Terrace Hills drive.

Virtual Reality Bobsled Simulator
Research of Andrew Kelly, LeRoy Alaways, Brian Lovrin, and Darla Weiss
Version 1 Bobsled Simulator That thing in the picture is a bobsled simulator. It's kind of like a flight simulator, but simulates driving a bobsled instead of flying a plane. An IBM workstation runs code which calculates the dynamics of the sled in real time. We feed the program track data (Lillehammer, Salt Lake City, Albertville, Calgary) and driver steering input, and it solves the equations of motion and draws a picture on the screen from the driver's point of view. Data is also sent from the workstation to a motion control system which plays a CD of the sounds of a bobsled going down a real run, rolls the cockpit, and provides force feedback to the driver through the steering handles. The idea behind this project is to help train the United States Olympic Bobsled Team. With the simulator the drivers can take as many practice runs in a day as they like (as opposed to 4 or 5 runs maximum when training on ice), work on only one section of a track at a time, practice many different tracks without having to travel, compare their "lines" to other drivers, and get quantitative feedback on how they are doing after each run. There are three versions of the bobsled simulator currently in operation: one in Lake Placid, NY at the

Dreamin' Bout Heavin' But Feel Like Hell
It's official. I am a traitor. Today I ventured into the dark depths of the California DMV. As my rent payments for my Union Square apartment (tear) are through I am officially not a New York Resident. That sucks because I feel that my NY residence made me better than the rest of the puff balls out here. I mean, I still rock the Giants Hat, drive like a madman, blast Biggie, and inevitably move the fuck back home but this is still a tough step for me.
All told, Santa Monica ran a pretty tight ship on the DMV department. Much friendlier than the New York lot at least. Only issue was that they made me take the drivers test once again. Shit, this could be complicated. Luckily I flirted with the test desk woman (think 47 year old 215lb black woma with purple fingernails longer than my tibula) and she smiled while sliding me the exam "This is the easy one sweetie....". My hospitality training and boyish good looks paid off once more. I rocked the motherfucker.
So I went to a NY Giants Santa Monica Fan Club meeting at a local bar this Sunday. Wow, was it lame. There were 8 guys in a quiet bar and 1 60 year old woman wearing a Giants hat. One of the awsome fans was reading a comic book. Jessica and I were not amused. I missed going to my favorite football bar for this? After 2 Fat Tires (10am) and a few texts to
