Jamaica Bobsled - Olympic History
Jamaica first competed in the Olympics at the 1948 Games in London. Three medals were won at those Olympics and since then the country has been regarded as a sprint powerhouse at the Olympic Games. That is why it came as such a shock to world in 1988 when Jamaica entered a bobsled team in the XVth Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, Canada. Many people thought it was a joke and most people believed that it was impossible for a country more popularly known as a tropical paradise to successfully field a team to compete in a winter sport. Jamaica Defence Force where they found three of the original members of the team. Captain Dudley Stokes, Lt Devon Harris and Private Micheal White. The fourth member of the team, Chris Stokes, the brother of Dudley joined the team later on. The bobsled team was selected in September 1987 and did their initial training in Jamaica; practicing the push start on a flat concrete surface on the military base in Kingston using a make shift sled. From There they went to Calgary, Canada where they went down a bobsled track for the first time. After three weeks in Calgary it was off to Innsbruck Austria where they competed in two minor races before returning to Jamaica for the Christmas break. They spent the month of January in Lake Placid, New York before the Olympic Games in February 1988. The 1988 Jamaican Bobsled Team joined by some new team mates went on to compete in the 19992 Games of Albertville , France. The team showed dramatic improvement with former Brakeman turned driver, Devon Harris finishing 35 th from 50 starts in the two man event. The second Jamaican sled piloted by Dudley Stokes was 36th.

Where have I been?
Testing...Testing....1,2....Testing...1,2,3....Hello? Can you hear me? Ok, so I've posted a few blog entries over the past few weeks only to find that they only show up on MY computer. Not so cool, but it happens. Apparently I'm using a "plug-in" that doesn't work well with the blog host. Oh well, problem solved, were back on the air (or ground, or whatever you want to call it). "Ok, so I'll try to get 3 months in one post. Realistically there isn't much to say other than we are dominating the season. It started in Calgary with a 2nd in 2-man and a victory in 4-man. Not a bad way to start the season. I was a bit worried going in to those races a lot of critics were saying that it was a fluke and that I wouldn't be able to maintain that standard. The last thing I wanted was to show up at the first race and totally flop, only to prove them right. Well, looks like they were wrong, really wrong. They can all kiss my rosey red cheeks.

Schenectady Gazette reporter Kathy McGarry Muller, right, prepares for a swift ride down the ice of Mount Van Hoevenberg’s bobsled run during the winter of 1956. Text Size: A A A Kathy McGarry Muller heard the voice, high above the ice of Mount Van Hoevenberg. “Now approaching the finish curve,” it said, blaring from a public address system near the turns and straightaways of the mountain’s bobsled run. Muller couldn’t do much more than listen. The Schenectady Gazette reporter had put away her notebook — and her fears — for 40 seconds of thrills and speed inside a fast-moving four-man bobsled. She had vivid memories of her cool trip during the winter of 1956. “I had the feeling my right shoulder was being pushed toward the ice-packed ground by the force of rounding the curve,” she wrote. “For a fraction of a second, the sled felt as if it were riding upside down. We were 15 feet up.” Muller didn’t need the complete routine. The 22-foot high bank at “Shady” curve did not appeal to her. So she signed up for just the final half-mile of the bob run. It was quite enough.

Bob Sled Plans for Bobsledding Fun
Steered from the rear, this sled has more room than the conventional type of the same size, as space forward, which ordinarili would be occupied by the steering gear, is utilized for a passenger. Also, this design permits placing the sled closer together, which makes steering easie, and the pilot has a clear view over the heads of the passengers. Construction is relatively light without sacrifice of strength. The steering gear consists of a standard auto wheel mounted on a steel tube post having a cross arm welded on the lower end to which tie rods are bolted. The front sled turns on a ball and socket joint, permitting it to follow uneven contours without strain on the chassis. This joint consists of a king pin with an integral ball and collar, and a steel socket split and assembled with bolts. The ball and socket join taken from the radius rods of a model-T Ford can be adapted to this purpose. The sled runners are 14 inches apart and the rear sled is connected to the chassis with a long bolt through the eye bolts in the upper and lower cross members. Bobsled Plans
