For other uses, see Boomerang (disambiguation) A typical wooden returning boomerang A boomerang is a simple wooden implement used for various purposes. It is primarily associated with Australian Aborigines , but other forms are found amongst peoples of North East Africa Arizona and southern California Native Americans and in India . The oldest boomerang found so far was discovered in a cave in the Carpathian Mountains in Poland and is believed to be about 20,000 years old. Boomerangs come in many shapes and sizes depending on their geographic/tribal origins and intended function. The most recognizable type is the returning boomerang, a kind of throwing stick that, when thrown correctly, travels in a curved path and returns to its point of origin. Other types of boomerang are of the non-returning sort, and indeed, some are not thrown at all but are used in hand-to-hand combat by Aboriginal people. Boomerangs can be variously used as hunting weapons, percussive musical instruments, battle clubs, fire-starters, decoys for hunting waterfowl, and as recreational play toys. The smallest boomerang may be less than 10 cm from tip-to-tip, and the largest over 2 meters in length. Tribal boomerangs may be inscribed and/or painted with designs meaningful to its maker. Most boomerangs seen today are of the tourist or competition sort, and are almost invariably of the returning type.

We, the writers of boomerangs.org, hope to expand boomerang-throwing throughout the world . Though I was doubtful that these things worked (having seen them more in the Legend of Zelda and in cartoons), I found out that not only were these flying toys real - but they were easy to throw. Soon enough I realized that I wanted to share the fun with my friends and family, then more and more. And here we are. We have pages on how to throw , pages of local clubs , how they work , an improving blog photos and videos and we've linked to the major boomerang makers in the world. We've partnered with boomerangs.com and coloradoboomerangs.com as outlets to buy working, durable boomerangs. In particular we recommend the Aspen , the Bellen , the Triblader and the Yanaki for beginners. And for more advanced throwers we strongly endorse the

First Data Release: July 21, 2005 We have released the first round of data from the 2003 flight. This round of papers currently includes an instrument paper, the temperature and polarization spectra, and the results from cosmological parameter estimation. The papers may be obtained from arXiv.org , while both the papers and the data are posted on the collaboration web sites in North America and in Italy

Boomerang
A general, open source, retargetable decompiler of machine code programs
Introduction
This project is an attempt to develop a real decompiler for machine code programs through the open source community. A decompiler takes as input an executable file, and attempts to create a high level, compilable, possibly even maintainable source file that does the same thing. It is therefore the opposite of a compiler, which takes a source file and makes an executable. However, a general decompiler does not attempt to reverse every action of the decompiler, rather it transforms the input program repeatedly until the result is high level source code. It therefore won't recreate the original source file; probably nothing like it. It does not matter if the executable file has symbols or not, or was compiled from any particular language. (However, declarative languages like ML are not considered.)

BOOMERANG has flown around Antarctica in two separate flights (the first in 1998, the second in 2003) to map the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The first flight measured the CMB temperature anisotropies; the second measured both temperature and polarization anisotropies. The CMB maps made by Boomerang tell us about the conditions in the very early universe, when it was only a few hundred thousand years old. Using these data, we test and constrain models of cosmology, measuring such fundamental properties as the overall density (which describes the geometry of the universe, ie curvature of spacetime), and density in various components (normal matter, dark matter, and dark energy). 2003 Boomerang flight:
I n this flight we measured both temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB, using a bolometric polarimeter.

Q: Who invented returning boomerangs?
A : The experts aren't really sure when and where people first developed returning boomerangs, but the Aborigines of Australia are generally credited with the invention. Aborigines used non-returning boomerangs, which they call kylies, extensively in hunting, and the theory is that at some point, one or more Aborigines used a kylie with the particular shape of a boomerang and noticed that it traveled in an arc. This might have been pure accident, or it might have been the result of design experimentation. One theory is that an Aboriginal hunter fashioned a smaller kylie with a more angled curve because he or she noticed how a bird held its wings in a pronounced V shape while soaring through the air. When most of us think of boomerangs , we imagine somebody (quite possibly a cartoon character) throwing a banana-shaped stick that eventually turns around and comes right back to the thrower's hand (possibly after hitting another cartoon character in the head). This idea is simply amazing, and as children, our first reaction to such a device was: This stick is obviously possessed with magical powers! Of course, the person or people who discovered the boomerang hadn't actually found a magical stick, but they had come upon an amazing application of some complex laws of physics.

Are you thinking about retirement; a next career or new business; personal fulfillment through community involvement; life-long learning; travel and adventure? Welcome to Boomerang, a Chandler Community project designed to help Boomers and near or recent retirees figure it out. Why Should I Be Planning Now? Michelangelo is quoted as saying, "The greater danger for most of us in not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." Michelangelo is the perfect reminder for Baby Boomers to take a second look at life and ask, "What's next for me?" Michelangelo was 71 when he became the chief architect for St. Peter's Basilica. At 81 he was still working every day. Is your greatest contribution still inside you? It's only too late if you don't begin. Print Version

Social Media Meets Digital Filmmaking
March 28th, 2008 by Jessica Jones If anyone can turn a social media experiment into a cinematic mosaic of imagination, it’s Paulo Coelho. Arguably best known for his novel The Alchemist, Coelho is an internationally acclaimed author and lyricist who has sold over 100 million books. He may not have the most experience in film making and music composition, but plenty of his fans do. That idea sets the stage for The Experimental Witch Competition , a collaborative film project announced by the beloved Brazilian author last June.   Coelho’s last novel, The Witch of Portobello, was told from the viewpoint of 15 different characters. For his film competition, Coelho asked filmmakers to choose a character from the book and shoot all of the scenes told from that character’s perspective. Filmmakers are asked to submit their movies via YouTube, while music composers will submit their contributions/theme songs through MySpace. Coelho will work with a professional editor to sew 15 winning films together to recreate the book, and will show the final version in film festivals throughout the world. He communicates this all through his blog . The Experimental Witch is, in essence, an experiment in social media.

Boomerang as Vector Rotation Example
The returning trajectory of a boomerang involves the aerodynamic lift of its airfoil shape plus the gyroscopic precession associated with its rapid spin. The precession redirects the airfoil so that it "flys" around the returning path.
The three diagrams above address the nature of the boomerang's flight. Click on one of the diagrams for further details about the boomerang. Index

A boomerang is an example of gyroscopic precession . The popular variety at left is thrown by grasping it at the bottom and throwing it so that it rotates about an axis perpendicular to the plane shown. This plane is tilted enough from the vertical enough to get enough lift to keep the boomerang airborne. The cross-section at each end is shaped as an airfoil with its leading edge pointed so that it is facing forward when that end is at the top. The airfoil causes it to "fly" in the direction thrown, but the higher aerodynamic lift on the top end creates a torque which causes the angular momentum to precess , gradually changing the heading of the airfoil and moving it in the curved path Index

A boomerang is an example of gyroscopic precession . The boomerang throw gives it angular momentum . This angular momentum is caused to precess by the fact that the top edge is traveling faster with respect to the air and gets more lift. This produces a
