Hubble Catches Scattered Light From the Boomerang Nebula
Astronomers are uncertain of the cause of bipolar outflow in this, and many other, young nebulae like the Boomerang. It may be that a disk of slow-moving material is situated around the equator of the star, thereby blocking more rapidly moving ejected material there, and allowing only matter closer to the poles to be ejected. Another consideration may be that magnetic fields are responsible for constraining the material and thus causing the double-lobed shape of the nebula. Bipolar outflows are seen to occur both from very young stars ("protostars") that are still in the process of collapsing and forming, and from old stars nearing the ends of their lives that have become bloated red giants. The Boomerang is believed to be the ejected outer layers from an old red giant. Each lobe of the Boomerang Nebula is nearly one light-year in length, making the total length of the nebula half as long as the distance from our Sun to our nearest neighbors- the Alpha Centauri stellar system, located roughly 4 light-years away.

Introduction

Most of us are familiar with the boomerang, the wonderful stick that returns when you throw it. However, most of us don't know the history of the boomerang or the complex physics and aerodynamics involved. To understand why a boomerang returns, we must look at the shape of the boomerang, the aerodynamics and physics. Finally, the correct throwing technique will be discussed.
History
The boomerang is often times thought of as a weapon. However, the boomerang has always been primarily a recreational toy. The real weapon used by the Aborigines was the killer-stick. The killer-stick shares many properties with the boomerang except one. The killer-stick does not return!
The killer-stick was simply a stick honed to have a cross-section similar to a modern day airfoil. This stick actually flew through the air at high speeds. It was given a rotation at launch for stability much like the discus and frisbee of today. The killer-stick could be thrown very far and with great accuracy.

THE AERODYNAMICS OF BOOMERANG
The boomerang is a scientific marvel as it envisions the aerodynamic as well as aviation principles coupled with many theorems of Physics. It is all the more striking, nay, bewildering that these principles of aviation and theorems of physics were unerringly utilized thousands of years before they were even invented. How does a boomerang float in the air? The same aviation principle. The wing of an airplane is designed in such a way that at the topside the wind speed is much more greater than at the bottom side. The result? Because of the very high velocity of wind at the topside of the wing, the pressure is small and at the same time since the velocity of wind at the bottom side of the wing is much, much less, the pressure is great. This pressure pushes the wing up. In the case of boomerang it is also acting on the same principle – The Bernoulli’s principle for the simple reason that its design too is in the form of a horizontal half – tear drop! How does a boomerang return to the thrower?

Title: A measurement by BOOMERANG of multiple peaks in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background
Authors: C.B. Netterfield P.A.R. Ade J.J. Bock J.R. Bond ... F. Scaramuzzi (Submitted on 30 Apr 2001 ( ), last revised 25 Feb 2002 (this version, v3)) Abstract: This paper presents a measurement of the angular power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background from l=75 to l=1025 (~10' to 5 degrees) from a combined analysis of four 150 GHz channels in the BOOMERANG experiment. The spectrum contains multiple peaks and minima, as predicted by standard adiabatic-inflationary models in which the primordial plasma undergoes acoustic oscillations. These results significantly constrain the values of Omega_tot, Omega_b h^2, Omega_c h^2 and n_s. Help Boomerang Several indigenous cultures developed hunting and weapon tools which look like boomerangs. Called hunting sticks or kylies, they were heavier and bigger than boomerangs and not as flexible. They have been found in ancient Egypt, Eastern Europe and Australia. However, the curved throwing sticks were mainly used by the aborigines of Australia for hunting and warfare. Boomerangs as we know them today, were invented for sport, the returning boomerang. The name boomerang comes from the Turuwal tribe of New South Wales. Boomerang
Complete instructions to use your own boomerang. Boomerang Types
There are two types of boomerang, returning and non-returning. The returning boomerang was invented by Australian Aborigines thousands of years ago. Boomerangs have been found and carbon dating has proven that they are over 10,000 years old. What is a Boomerang?

State-of-the-Art Shooter Detection
The Boomerang shooter detection system pinpoints incoming small arms fire from the shooter. Boomerang is available to U.S. military, law-enforcement agencies, municipalities, and to other approved U.S. domestic and foreign entities. Government contractors can incorporate Boomerang into their systems or platforms.
Combat Proven and Award Winning
Boomerang is currently employed by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. And in 2005 Boomerang won both the DARPA "Significant Technical Achievement Award" and an MITX award.
Quiet, Passive Operation
Boomerang uses passive acoustic detection and computer-based signal processing to locate the shooter. When mounted on a vehicle, the system operates when the vehicle is stationary or moving. Boomerang uses a single mast-mounted, compact array of microphones to detect incoming fire.
Best Performance and Best Value
Boomerang performs best and costs less than competitors. And Boomerang is the only shooter detector shown to operate successfully in urban terrain (

How To Throw and Make
Australian Sport Boomerangs
Boomerangs
Boomerangs are unique, fascinating objects that are so simple to use that anyone who can throw a ball, can throw boomerangs. However, to have a true understanding of how boomerangs fly and the many aerodynamics forces that give boomerangs their unique returning ability is a fascinating subject that dedicated Rang'ers (people who throw boomerangs) can take years to master. Boomerangs come in many shapes and sizes, and every boomerang has it's own unique flight. Once you understand the basics of how boomerangs fly, you can easily make your own with a few simple tools and basic plywood. Boomerangs can be enjoyed on your own, just you, your boomerangs and the wind working in harmony. If you enjoy competing with others, boomerang competitions give you the thrill of testing your skills against your friends. There are many different fun and challenging boomerang events that you can compete along side, or head to head with your fellow Rang'ers Finally, making boomerangs can also be classified as a work of Art. Many are beautifully constructed, carved and decorated, but still remain a genuine, returning, sport boomerang.

TOPIC: Boomerang
DESCRIPTION: Plans for making and flying small boomerangs made from file card paper
CONTRIBUTED BY: Gregory Vogt, OSU
EDITED BY: Roger Storm, NASA Glenn Research Center MATERIALS:
File card
Scissors
Pencil
Pattern PROCEDURE:
Cut out the patterns of the boomerangs and trace them onto a file card. Cut out the boomerangs from the file cards. SOME SAMPLE SHAPES ARE SHOWN HERE. FLYING THE FINGER BOOMERANGS: Lay the boomerang on the edge of a book and tilt the book slightly upward. The book will serve as a launching platform. Using one of your index fingers, strike the boomerang so that it spins rapidly as it shoots rapidly off the book. The boomerang should fly straight out, turn, and come back. If necessary, give the boomerang a bit of additional lift by bending the leading edge tips of each wing slightly upward like a forward facing flap. DISCUSSION: Refer to the Four-Wing Bomerang Activity for more information about boomerangs.
