Border Sports: Bullfighting Objective:
Students will understand the cultural significance and meaning of the bullfight. In addition, students will research internet sources on the ethical aspects of bullfighting, and exercise their rhetorical and argumentative skills in an in-class debate on the subject. NCSS Standards Met By This Lesson: I, III, IV, V and X. Introduction: The world of sports, especially collegiate and professional sports, is a major part of North American culture. Likewise, sport is an important part of Border, Mexican, and Latin American culture. We study sports not only for the fun of it, but as a way to better understand the people and the cultures who enjoy sports. There are other options for "Border Sports" other than bullfighting. Mexican fútbol (soccer), baseball, and even Mexican wrestling are important sports worthy of study. However, bullfighting is so uniquely part of Mexican culture and also raises heated debate from both pro- and anti-bullfighting factions that it seems the richest choice for a lesson on border sports. Bullfights are regularly held in the border cities of Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana, and within the past few years the bloodless, Portuguese-style of bullfighting has become popular in California. Before getting into the controversy of bullfighting, this lesson asks that the teacher and all students involved will first do their best to give a fair, impartial consideration of the meaning and significance of the bullfight. That is, before we divide into partisan factions, we must first approach the subject as anthropologists or sociologists, objectively trying to understand the phenomenon.

One thing's for certain: The bulls never make it out alive, so it's not for the faint of heart. Plaza layout
All bullrings, or plazas, are round, shaped like coliseums of old. The seating terminology varies, but most bullrings are divided as follows: The first and second rows of seats surrounding the ring are known as the Barrera (barrier) and Contrabarrera, respectively. Behind these rows are six- or seven-row sections called tendidos: Tendido Bajo, Tendido Medio, and Tendido Alto, each section a little further back, in that order. Spain's version of nosebleed seats is an upper deck called the Andanada, also known as the Tejadillo or the Tendido Cubierto. The general rule is that higher seats cost less, but there are other factors at work. Sol or Sombra?

AP Photo/Cesar Rangel By Neil Trent In April, the city council in Barcelona voted to condemn bullfighting, making it the fifth city in Spain to come out on the side of civilization. As the capital of Catalonia and one of the world's cultural centers, Barcelona's progressive, if mostly symbolic, stand bodes well for everyone who wishes to see this blood sport end. However, what makes Barcelona's stance so encouraging is that it expresses the people's will. A recent poll showed that 63% of residents want to see bullfighting end in their city, giving officials the green light (and backbone) to buck traditions even if they don't have the legal authority to actually impose a ban. (That must come from the provincial Catalonian government.) The same poll yielded another important finding: Fully 96% of respondents indicated that any entertainment involving the suffering of animals should be banned. In a world of war and violence and perpetual terrorist threats, the people in Barcelona clearly recognize that they do not have to accept brutality in their faces for entertainment purposes. So their government has decided to call Barcelona "a pioneer in the abolition of bullfighting."

Message Board Links ABOUT BULLFIGHTING Although bullfighting is arguably one of the cruelest blood sports currently in existence, it is enjoying continual popularity worldwide, especially in Portugal, Spain, and France. Even as the worldwide standard for the treatment of animals continues to rise, bullfighting remains fiercely guarded as a culturally rich art. But at what cost? THE BULLFIGHT A bullfight officially begins with the entrance of the toro, but many preparations prior to the fight itself ensure that the bull's basic ability for self-defense is virtually removed. Proponents of bullfighting frequently cite the bull's fair opportunity to fight for his life. However, subtle but disabling methods are used to impair the bull's senses and create the image that the public seeks. His eyes may be smeared with petroleum jelly, his horns dulled and his ears and nose stuffed with cotton. He is almost always presented to the matador in a heavily drugged state. The purpose of the sedation is to remove the bull's initial flight defense and leave him with only the option of aggression. The bull's entrance is almost immediately followed by the use of the picas, sharpened metal rods decorated colorfully. Picas are meant to severely damage the shoulder muscles of the bull and cause intense pain without much blood. The bull's immediate fearful reaction is meant to be misinterpreted as aggression. Generally this job is fulfilled by a picador, a bullfighter on horseback.

Spanish TV tiptoes out of bullring
By Daniel Woolls The Associated Press Published: August 23, 2007 document.writeln(''); E-Mail Article Listen to Article Printer-Friendly 3-Column Format Translate Share Article Text Size MADRID: State-run Spanish television has quietly dropped live coverage of bullfighting, ending a decades-old tradition of showcasing the national pastime on the ground that the deadly duel between matador and beast is too violent for young viewers. In practical terms, the decision by the Socialist government is largely symbolic. Of the hundreds of bullfights that fill the March-to-October calendar each season, state-run television tended to broadcast only about a dozen anyway. Pay television channels and stations owned by regional governments are full of bullfights. Still, many in the bullfighting world are livid, as is the conservative opposition, over a move they see as slighting a cherished piece of Spanish culture.
