In each faena a bull (toro) is faced by one of three matadors (though on special occasions there may only be one matador present). Matadors (or toreros), the ones who actually kill the bull, are dressed in gold, while their subordinates are in silver or black dress.
Each faena is divided into three sections. In the first section, the bull's strength is tested by the matador and his assistants, who at this point are using large magenta and yellow capes. The bull is then weakened by picadors on horseback who lance the bull in the back of the neck. In addition to weakening the bull, this forces it to drop its head to the level of the bullfighters' capes.

Origins and History of Bullfighting Bullfighting is certainly one of the best-known-although at the same time most controversial-Spanish popular customs. This Fiesta could not exist without the toro bravo, a species of bull of an ancient race that is only conserved in Spain. Formerly this bull's forebears, the primitive urus, were spread out over wide areas of the world. Many civilizations revered them; the bull cults on the Greek island of Crete are very well known. The Bible tells of sacrifices of bulls in honour of divine justice.
Bulls also played an important role in the religious ceremonies of the Iberian tribes living in Spain in prehistoric times. The origins of the plaza de toros (bullring) are probably not the Roman amphitheatres but rather the

If facing 1,800 pounds of rampaging hamburger for 8 seconds sounds daunting, try doing it for 6 hours. Every weekend. On top of that, add the responsibility of keeping 45 cowboys and your coworkers alive. Sound good? Welcome to the world of the bullfighter. The PBR's protection bullfighters risk life and limb on a regular basis to save cowboys (and each other) from the heads, horns and hooves of their adversaries in the arena. Each year, the Top 45 riders of the PBR vote to determine which set of guardian angels will watch over them at the PBR World Finals and throughout the season. This year, Shorty Gorham, Frank Newsom, Joe Baumgartner and alternates Darrell Diefenbach, and Shane Simpson got the nod.

The padded garment worn under the baggier outer shorts keep muscles warm and loose while providing protection with both foam and plastic padding. Baumgartner credits stock handler Ted Groene and retired bullfighter Rob Smets, for getting him into professional bullfighting. He has proven to be outstanding in his profession and a natural leader for the PBR bullfighting team.

No death in the afternoon: state TV axes bullfights
Spanish broadcaster says coverage not possible at children's viewing times
About this article
Close This article appeared in the Guardian on Tuesday August 21 2007 on p17 of the International section. It was last updated at 07:40 on August 21 2007. Live bullfighting used to be a state TV staple. Photograph: Jon Nazca/Reuters It was once, along with football matches featuring Real Madrid, the lifeblood of Spain's public television. In the late afternoon bars with television sets would fill up, families would settle down together in their living rooms, and the country's most famous television presenter would appear on the screen to announce the day's star attraction - the bullfight. This year, however, some 51 years after state television channel TVE made its first bullfighting broadcast, it looks set not to show a single live bullfight.

In Southern France there are 6 bullfighting schools approved by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
From 5-6 years old the children begin to attend these schools with their parents permission.
They begin to learn how to torture and kill animals.
It is difficult to imagine the carnage at these practise sessions due to the inexperience of the children.
Once again the authorities subsidise these “schools” with tax payers money.

BULLFIGHTING Bullfighting is an important part of Spanish culture and is presently enjoying a great increase in popularity in Spain. Its origins are reputed as ancient, but the earliest recorded dates back to 711 AD when a bullfight (Corrida) took place in honour of the crowning of King Alfonso VIII . All over Spain each week thousands of Spaniards flock to their nearest Bullring and it has been estimated that over 24.00 bulls are killed each year in front of an enthusiastic audience of over 30 million spectators. The Spanish tend to look on bullfighting as a "ritual without religion". It should be noted that there is today in the Bullring a growing number of female Matadors . However, not all Spanish people agree with this sport or the manner in which it is conducted.
The bullfighting season is from March to October each year. The records show that in the initial past the performance was basically completed only on horseback and was reserved for selected members of Spanish aristocracy. When Felipe V became King he prohibited the nobles from taking part as it is said that he considered it created a bad image in front of the ordinary people. The commoners continued practicing the sport but started to tease the bulls by stabbing small spears into the bull. Thus, the origin of the "

In Act I, the horseman (cavaleiro) skillfully plants four beribboned barbs in the bull's back while trying to avoid the leather-padded horns. The horses are the short, stocky Lusitano breed, with excellent balance. In Act II, a colorfully clad eight-man suicide squad (called ) enters the ring and lines up single file facing the bull.
