The rules are almost identical to hurling with a few exceptions. One is that goalkeepers wear the same colours as outfield players and a player in camogie can handpass a score, which is not allowed in the men's game. All games last 60 minutes (senior inter-county hurling games last 70), and dropping the camogie stick to handpass the ball is permitted. The All-Ireland Final is held every year in Croke Park during September, usually the week between the hurling final and Gaelic football final. There are two main competitions; the National League which is staged during the winter-spring months and is used as a warm-up to the All-Ireland Championships during the summer. It is played mainly in Ireland, the most successful counties being Dublin Cork Kilkenny and in more recent times, Tipperary Counties compete to win the O'Duffy Cup , awarded to the team that wins the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship . Dublin have won the most Camogie All-Ireland titles with 26, the last being in

CAMOGIE
Camogie has to be one of the most played sports by both young and not so young Irish girls. Based on the rules of hurling which is also an old Irish game for men, camogie can seem dangerous to a stranger but not to the girls who with a passion love this sport . Two teams of twelve girls, battle it out, with what look like sticks but which are called hurls. Chasing after a ball which is called a sliotar. The objective of the game is to bring the ball either on your hurl or dribbling on the ground towards your opponents goals and scoring. The goals are a little different than usual goals there a small version of rugby posts. A goal is scored when the sliotar goes between the goal post (just like a goal in hockey). A point is scored when the ball travels between the two vertical posts over the goal post. There are three points in every goal hence the point is much easier to score.

Hurling and Camogie - An Introduction

FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Hurling is regarded as one of the fastest ball-games in the world - and to the uninitiated a first encounter may also beckon forth the attributes "chaotic" and "brutal". Sometimes hurling is confused with hockey. This confusion only lasts until one realizes that charging players occasionally wield their hurleys like lethal weapons of messy destruction. Quite within the rules in most cases.
A Basic History of Hurling
It is said that the heroes of Ireland played hurling long before Saint Patrick's time - the game might hold the claim of being the original gaelic game, being mentioned long before football. Around 1,300 bc the Fir Bolg and the Tuatha de Danaan started their epic battle at Moytura with a game of hurling. The Brehon Laws, Ireland's native system of justice, regulated the proper use of hurleys (the "stick") and any compensation in case of injury. Setanta (or Cúchulainn) was not only a proficient warrior, he also was a great hurler - beating a team of 150 single-handedly or hurling a dangerous dog to hell.

Sunday, June 6, 2004; Page M07 Are you funneling your unspent aggression in unproductive ways . . . say, snapping at your boss or fighting with your boyfriend? Rather than going into therapy – or losing your man – get the lead out with camogie, a women's team sport from Ireland that comes off like a freewheeling combination of baseball, lacrosse and field hockey. With rules similar to hurling – the men's version of the game – the goal is simple: Using a hurley (a flat stick made of ash wood), score points by moving the tennis-ball-size "sliothar" down the field and past the goalie through the H-shaped goal post. (Get it through the net below and score 3 points; above the vertical bar, 1 point.) It's the getting there where it gets funky: You can hit the sliothar with your stick or balance it on your hurley and run with it, but you can't throw it in the air with your hands or carry it in your paws for more than three steps. Players mostly range from age 18 to mid-30s, and each game has two 30-minute halves, with teams of 13 people each facing off. "You'll need stamina, hand-eye coordination and speed," says Niall Dempsey, 40, coach of the D.C. Gaels team. "You've got to be extremely fit to play."

Camogie Club Website The history of Camogie in the Courcey Parish started in 1954 when a group of girls from the parish got together and started a team called the Courcey Maids, their colours were blue and white with a red and white Courcey crest. They had to travel to Churchfield in Cork to play all their matches as it was mostly city teams they played. The highlight for the Courcey Maids teams was to be asked by the county board to invite a team from Armagh. The match was played in Kilmacsimon and two Courcey Maids played for Cork that day, Nellie O'Sullivan ("The Nellie Bus") and Kitty Crowley (RIP) (Kittys Bar Bandon). A young curate named O'Fiach accompanied the Armagh girls that day who was later to become Primate of All Ireland, Cardinal O'Fiach. After a lapse of a few years , Camogie was again revived in the Parish in 1982. The team then being known as Courcey Rovers and reverting to the club colours of Red and White hoops. In 1982 when the Camogie club was reformed they were the only team in West Cork but now are joined by almost a team from every Hurling Club in West Cork and South East Cork. Courceys in their first year went to the County semi-final and were beaten by a more experienced Glen Rovers side who went on to win the County. Two years later in 1984 they again reached the County Semi-Final to be narrowly beaten by St. Fanahans, Mitchelstown. One year later in 1985 was to be Courcey Rovers greatest year before the 1990's when they reached the County Final against Castlemagner but at the end the scoreline was Castlemagner 2:4, Courcey Rovers 1:2.
