Council joy at camogie win
Sunday Mirror Oct 1, 2000
TWO county councils came together in style yesterday to celebrate a sporting double.
Members of both North Tipperary and South Tipperary councils met at the Horse and Jockey on the border between them to honour the Tipperary senior camogie team. The squad won two All-Ireland finals back-to-back in 1999 and this year.

Camogie Campaign 2007.
St. Thomas' NS ,Peterswell girls played their Camogie Campaign in Group H. First we played Kiltiernan in our local pitch, St. Thomas where we had a great win. All the subs played. After that match we played Leitrim at the same pitch. They were trashed!! After that we were supposed to play G.S. Riabhach but that didn`t happen. Next we played Kilnadeema who had a strong team and won it out with a great win over Drim. Unfortunately they bet us by two goals which was very disappointing. We got through to the semi-final against Drim. It was a tough match as we were exhausted by the heat. Sadly they bet us by a few goals. This was our layout of the team:
  • Our great goalie, Carol Santos Our super back, Chloe Caswell Our super back, Amy Caulfield Our class midfielder, Teresa Slattery Our class midfielder, Fiona Keely Our Savage Forward, Clare Caulfield Our Savage Forward, Marie Farrell. Our Super Sub Goalie, Sin©ad Hegarty Our Great Fill in Louise Carr Our Great Fill in Edel Gardiner Our Great Fill in Kelly Shearer Our Great Fill in Keeley Mannion Our Great Fill in Siabhra Feeney Our Great Fill in Laura Hegarty
  • Our great Manager Mrs.Forde and her husband, our Coach S©an Forde. Thanks to all our loyal supporters.

    Gaelic Hurling/Camogie
Description Women play camogie and men play hurling! These are the fastest field games in the world. They are played with a small ball, called a sliotar, which is similar in size to a field hockey ball but with raised edges, and a curved wooden stick, called a hurley, which is curved outwards at the end to provide the striking surface. Hurling is played on the same field as Gaelic football and with the same style of goalposts. The methods of scoring also are the same three points, or a goal, for striking the ball into the net or one point, or a point, for striking it through the uprights. A player may strike the ball on the ground or in the air. Unlike field hockey, however, a player may pick up the ball and carry it for no more than four strides. After those steps, the player may bounce the ball on the hurley and back into the player's hand, remembering not to catch the ball more than twice. While running, the player must balance the ball on the hurley stick. Basic Rules A hurling team consists of 15 players and a number of substitutes. The substitutes can be called into play at any stage of the game. The team's manager chooses his starting fifteen and substitutes from a 'panel' of players. A maximum of three substitutes may be used in a game. Every hurling team has a goalkeeper, six defenders, two midfielders and six forwards.

Fr. Murphy's win Erin go Bragh Womens Festival At a bitterly cold Holly Lane last saturday, nine teams took part in the Birmingham Womens Festival organised by Erin go Bragh As well as the hosts teams travelled from London, Belfast, Glasgow and Westmeath and all exhibited a very high standard of camogie after the morning session the four semi finalists were known Croydon v Erin go Bragh and Tara v Fr Murphy's. the semi final was a personal triumph for Fr Murphy's Laureena Murphy, who scored 3-03 as her team went on to beat a very game Tara's side 3-06 to 2-03, whilst Croydon beat hosts Erin go Bragh to set up an all London final. The final itself was a tense affair, with both defences on top, making scores hard to come by, at the half time whistle Murphy's were ahead 0-02 to 0-00 thanks to Laureena Murphy, the same player pointed just after half time, but then Croydon struck a goal and the sides were level, Murphy's the threw everything at Croydon but found 'keeper Cathy Collins in splendid form, Emma Taylor regained the lead with a fine point and Laureena Murphy added another to leave the girls in purple and gold winners on a scoreline of 0-05 to 1-00. Denis Neenan presented the cup to Murphy's captain Melanie Hogan and Laureena Murphy was awarded player of the tournament.

    Camogie Conundrum
In the last ten years, the All-Ireland Camogie Final has been played by two teams- Tipperary and Cork. So you might think that moving to Cork would make it easy to find a camogie team. Surely, with the sort of talent they put on the pitch, the game must be played all over the county. Little girls must have a hurley put in their hands as soon as they're able to walk.
I've quickly learned that in certain parts of the county, that's a correct assumption. West Cork, different in many ways, is no exception in the sports department. West Cork is football country. And since I'm in the Middle of Nowhere, finding a camogie team is an extra challenge.
I started looking for a team a few weeks ago. Although there may be teams that are geographically closer, roads must always be the chief consideration when judging distances. The north-south roads in my part of the county are little more than tractor trails. The main Cork-Macroom road is the best way to get anywhere, which means my commute to any camogie would be a minimum of 30 minutes. Realistically, I'm looking at a minimum of an hour.
The closest club only has a Senior team. I play Junior B. To use a baseball analogy – I'm Class A and these guys are Major League. Even though the woman I talked to assured me I'd fit in with their team and they were looking for players, I'm reluctant to sign up with them.
