(December 2006) The Cock Fight by Jean-L©on G©r´me Training for a cockfight in Hell-Bourg, R©union A cockfight is a blood sport between two specially bred roosters held in a ring called a cockpit. The combatants, known as gamecocks or cocks , are specially bred birds, conditioned for increased stamina and strength. The comb and wattle are cut off in order to meet show standards of the American Gamefowl Society and the Old English Game Club and to prevent freezing in colder climates. Cocks possess congenital aggression toward all males of the same species . Cocks are given the best of care until near the age of two years old. They are conditioned, much like professional athletes prior to events or shows. Wagers are often made on the outcome of the match. While not all fights are to the death, they may result in the death of both birds. Cockfighting, was at one time considered to be an accepted, traditional sporting event in the United States . In many other areas around the world, cockfighting is still practiced as a mainstream event and is viewed as the national sport in some countries where it is Government controlled and a large amount of revenue for the state is raised.

      1. What is cockfighting? Cockfighting is a centuries-old blood sport in which two or more specially bred birds, known as gamecocks, are placed in an enclosure to fight, for the primary purposes of gambling and entertainment. A cockfight usually results in the death of one of the birds; sometimes it ends in the death of both. A typical cockfight can last anywhere from several minutes to more than half an hour. 2. How does it cause animal suffering? The birds, even those who do not die, suffer in cockfights. The birds cannot escape from the fight, regardless of how exhausted or injured they become. Common injuries include punctured lungs, broken bones, and pierced eyes. Such severe injuries occur because the birds' legs are usually fitted with razor-sharp steel blades or with gaffs, which resemble three-inch-long, curved ice picks. These artificial spurs are designed to puncture and mutilate. 3. Are there other concerns?

Cockfighting in Manzanillo Cockfighting is not a sport for everyone, and in fact, it is not a regular tourist attraction, although mock cockfights are held at many of the local restaurants in Manzanillo, during celebrations, such as Independence Day and Christmas Eve. At the Colima Bay Cafe, a waiter holds one of the fighting cocks. This gallo (rooster) was an entrant in a real cockfight the following day. Please click on photos to enlarge Tourists can go to see a real cockfight, however, if they visit Manzanillo. Before you do, however, read this article, and it will help you decide whether you really want to see one or not. Cockfighting is a tradition in Mexico, much like bullfighting. The Fighting Cock is a breed of domestic fowl, originating in India more than 4,500 years ago. Breeders say it is a dignified, wild, tough-bodied bird. It is good for hunting and is easy to raise. There are many different breeds, and they are bred for strength and endurance. The contests are held in a fighting pit, one side painted red and the other side green. The owners bring their roosters to the judge, who weighs them on a scale, and examines the bird. Owners oftentimes bring more than one bird to fight. The judges examine the birds and determine the odds. They also sell tickets. If you purchase a ticket on the favored bird, and he wins, you win, but not as much as if you chose the "underdog." If the winner of the fight is the "underdog", you are paid almost double your bet. The judge accepts your bet and pays out to the winners. At a recent cockfight held in a neighboring town of Manzanillo, the minimum bet was 100 pesos, or about $9 dollars.

Give Roosters Something to Crow About: End Cockfighting
Cockfighting—a blood sport in which at least two roosters are placed in a ring and forced to fight to the death for the "amusement" of onlookers—is illegal throughout the United States, except in Louisiana. As the Orlando Sentinel commented, "Cockfighting is a cruel sport that has gone on far too long."
Forced to Fight or Die
In their natural environments, birds fight over mates, food, or territory and to establish their dominance or position in a flock's pecking order. According to Paul Siegel, a Virginia Tech expert in fowl genetics and behavior, birds rarely fight to the death because the weaker bird generally flees. "If there's a way to escape," Siegel said, "they'll just get the heck out." In cockfights, Siegel says, roosters continue fighting because they cannot escape.

Thus it is difficult to stamp out. Like other illegal animal fights, cockfights take place surreptitiously What is Cockfighting? Cockfighting is an organized fight between two roosters who are placed in a pit to fight each other. The roosters have been trained to severely injure and/or kill one another. These birds, which are raised for the purpose of fighting, are tormented to make them aggressive. They are also given various legal and illegal drugs such as strychnine, caffeine, amphetamines, and epinephrine to make them more aggressive, increase their endurance and clot the blood that will flow during the fight. The natural spurs of the roosters are sawed off and replaced by razor sharp steel blades or curved implements called gaffs which measure from one to three inches long. During the fight, from which neither rooster can escape, the birds peck and maim one another with their beaks and weapons. The long, sharp gaffs stab deep into the flesh often requiring handlers to physically pull the animals apart. Although they have been bred to fight, the animals often become tired, incapable and suffer severe injuries. The fight only ends when one rooster is dead or is too weak to fight. The loser then gets thrown in the trash, sometimes while still alive. For the winner, there is no guarantee that he will survive his injuries and often ends up with the same fate as the losing bird.

The Sunday Mexican fiesta at Guadalajara's Camino Real promised cockfighting. I should have expected the "cockfight" would amount to a quick display of two cheerfully bored roosters who could have auditioned for a wholesome children's show. "Genuine cockfights are illegal in Mexico," chastened self-appointed cognoscenti . I should have known that a real cockfight was as likely to take place at the Camino Real as a greased pig contest would be at the Ritz-Carlton. I wanted the blood and gore that nature thrusts upon ordinary surroundings, feeding that perverse fascination many of us derive from encounters with a gruesome car accident that demands impolite staring. The clandestine excitement of the forbidden beckoned. Two decades later, I watched my neighbor Roberto as he handfed chopped fruit, vegetables, and meat to some big chickens he proudly introduced to me as "fighting cocks." Caged separately in spacious pens, these exuberantly plumed and healthy birds didn't look like any roosters I had ever seen, but I took Roberto's word for what they were. Only weeks later did it become apparent why these roosters looked out of the ordinary - their combs and wattles were missing. Sure enough, these really were fighting cocks, and I found myself invited to Sunday's peleas de gallos (cockfights).

Copperhead Ridge is the largest of two cockfighting pits in Virginia, with attendance at over 250 people. The LCA undercover investigator supplied valuable information that lead to the closure of the facility and the arrest of its owner. According to the Sheriff's Department, they are keeping a close eye on the facility to make sure no further illegal activity is conducted on the premises. Men in Mets and Yankees caps scoop them up and cradle them like infants, stroking their feathers until they close their eyes. By the time night falls in this cockfighting club in El Nueve, a working-class neighborhood of Santo Domingo, many of the roosters will be dead. They can have their eyes pecked out by a more vigorous adversary. They can be impaled through the brain with one of the plastic spikes that are affixed to the foot of every fighting bird. Or, if a lung is punctured, the end may come in slow, raspy gasps.

Philippines: Cockfighting
Cockfighting, or "sabong" in the Philippine vernacular, has been referred to by many as a sport, a profession, a lifestyle even. Or, to others, simply a pastime. Cockfighting, which dates back to the pre-Spanish era, knows no class distinction, where rich and poor alike meet and enjoy the game. Cockfighting, long been banned or driven underground in most other countries, remains largely popular in the Philippines and is virtually the national sport.

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Friday, February 8th 2008, 4:00 AM Rothstein for News Pedro Martinez Animal rights groups are accusing Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez and Hall of Fame hurler Juan Marichal of fowl play after both were shown attending a cockfight in the Dominican Republic in a video posted on YouTube last week. "Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal exhibited appallingly bad judgment in participating in a staged animal fight," Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, said in a statement. "It doesn't excuse the behavior to find a legal haven for this reprehensible and inhumane conduct. It's animal cruelty, no matter where it occurs. "Animal fighting has no place whatsoever among those who presume to be role models for youngsters," added Pacelle. "Not in this country, and not elsewhere." Cockfighting is legal in the Dominican Republic, but illegal in 48 states in the U.S. Louisiana passed a law banning the blood sport that will go into effect in August. New Mexico, the other state where cockfighting is legal, has no pending legislation to ban the sport. "I understand that people are upset. This is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic," Martinez, who is in the Dominican Republic, said in a statement. "I was invited by my idol Juan Marichal to attend the event as a spectator, not as a participant."
