What is Lure Coursing?
Lure Coursing is a humane sport created in the 70's mainly for sight hounds. It simulates the chase of a hare during a hunt but any dog can participate and have fun. The "bunny" or lure is usually a simple white trash bag that is pulled along a course with many turns. Many breeds are involved today; the Afghan, Basenji, Borzoi, Greyhound, Ibizan, Irish Wolfhound, Italian Greyhound, Pharaoh Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Scottish Deerhound, Sloughi, Whippet, and some others are the typical participants, even out beloved Jack Russell Terrier can enjoy a good romp. This equipment can also be used for training birds of prey or excersising exotic animals!
What is needed?
Basic set-up should include a lure machine, drive wheel, take-up wheel, pulleys, nylon string, lure tips and of course a lure, usually a white trash bag.

L URE C OURSING
New: 19 Mar 97 // Rev: Feb 2005 ( Brag Below) The sport of Lure Coursing gives the Irish Wolfhound (and other sighthound) owners the luxury of seeing poetry in motion. The hounds spring, run, turn, twist in a simulation of the actions their ancestors used to catch live game. This is what our hounds were bred to do. It adds to the bond between human and hound just as it did ages ago when they hunted together for food and survival. True, the modern hound must chase an artificial lure on a string, but they obviously don't care! Just a chance to get out into the open field and run is all they ask of us...to see the double suspension gallop in action!
What a way to motivate ourselves to keep the hounds in condition! The hound will be trim and muscular; their heart and lungs and circulation in top shape. We know how many years we can add by keeping personally fit in our own lives; imagine what we are doing for our hounds. Our Irish Wolfhound needs to show its functionality not just be a friendly, loving couch potato. More and more it is becoming obvious that lure coursing can help us extend the lifespan of our beloved hounds.
To get started write to the American Kennel Club, Performance Events, 51 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10010 for a list of clubs near you. They will also send you a brochure on Lure Coursing. Just ask for it. Also, requests can be made on-line to the AKC [

Cascade Coursing Club was founded in 1998 with the purpose of providing American Kennel Club Lure Coursing events in the greater Seattle, Washington area. We are strongly dedicated to training all Sighthounds and their owners for safe and successful participation in the sport. We hold regular training sessions, called workouts, in the Snoqualmie Valley east of Seattle, and our lure coursing trials have also been held in this area, not far from highway I-90. Lure Coursing as a competitive dog sport is over 30 years old in the USA, and 12 Sighthound breeds are eligible to compete and earn the AKC recognized titles of Junior Courser, Senior Courser, Field Champion and Lure Courser Excellent. These titles in their abbreviated form of JC, SC, FC ,MX, and LCX become part of the hound's name, are entered in the American Kennel Club stud book as part of the hound's permanent record and become part of the hound's official pedigree. Lure Coursing is wonderful fun for both owner and hound and gives the hound an opportunity to satisfy the basic urge to hunt with no live "prey" involved. We invite you and your hounds to join us in training and in trials.

From LoveToKnow 1911
COURSING (from Lat. cursus, currere, to run), the hunting of game by dogs solely by sight and not by scent . From time to time the sport has been pursued by various nations against various animals, but the recognized method has generally been the coursing of the hare by greyhounds. Such sport is of great antiquity, and is fully described by Arrian in his Cynegeticus about A.D. 150, when the leading features appear to have been much the same as in the present day. Other Greek and Latin authors refer to the sport; but during the middle ages it was but little heard of. Apart from private coursing for the sake of filling the pot with game, public coursing has become an exhilarating sport. The private sportsman seldom possesses good strains of blood to breed his greyhounds from or has such opportunities of trying them as the public courser. The first known set of rules in England for determining the merits of a course were drawn up by Thomas , duke of Norfolk , in Queen Elizabeth's reign; but no open trials were heard of until half a century later, in the time of Charles I . The oldest regular coursing club of which any record exists is that of Swaffham , in Norfolk , which was founded by Lord Orford in 1766; and in 1780 the Ashdown Park (Berkshire) meeting was established. During the next seventy years many other large and influential societies sprang up throughout

Coursing is one of the world's oldest field sports. Since the days of the Pharaohs "gazehounds", dogs which hunt exclusively by sight, have been tested in competition. Arrian, a Roman writing in AD116 laid down: "The true sportsman does not take out his dog to destroy the hares, but for the sake of the course and the contest between the dogs and the hares, and is glad if the hare escapes." THE COMPLETE BOOK OF COURSING by Steve Copold.
Preface
Books are not men yet they are alive
They are man's memory and his aspiration.
They are the link between his present and his past,
The tools he builds with.

Stephen Vincent Benet
Coursing is an anachronism that has survived the passing centuries. It has lost its exact moment in time, and instead has spread itself across nearly all of recorded history. Why after these thousands of years have the hounds and the pastime survived where mighty edifices have returned to the dust? This cannot be a chance occurrence; the odds against it are phenomenal. There can be no concrete answer for the question. It is an involved and, sometimes, perplexing matter with a dozen variables: the hounds, their masters, the chase, traditions, the sport, and on, and on. Each individual that fancies or cares for one or more of the sighthounds must find his own answer.
I should like to thank all of those who have helped assemble the manuscript, and a very special thanks to Sally Bell and M. H. "Dutch" Salmon for their assistance with the Great Coursing Hounds section. My deepest appreciation to my wife, Kay, not only for putting up with the project, but for her encouragement and inspiration as well. Finally, my thanks and admiration to the marvelous hounds that make it all happen.

  • Introduction One of the most enjoyable past times that a Deerhound owner can share with her hound is the sport of lure coursing. Lure coursing was developed in California in the early 1970s as a way to allow sighthounds to use their hunting skills without chasing live game. The dogs, in pairs or trios, chase an artificial lure (usually a white plastic bag) over a set course plan and are judged in the following categories: enthusiasm, follow, speed, agility and endurance. The title "Field Champion" can be earned when your dog has obtained a certain combination of placements and points competing against others of her breed. This article is not intended to go into a detailed description of lure coursing, rather it is meant to give the reader advice on selecting, raising and training a Scottish Deerhound for lure coursing. There is an excellent lure coursing FAQ written by Bonnie Dalzell that should answer any questions about the sport in general.

Training Your Irish Wolfhound Puppy For Lure Coursing The intent of this article is to help Irish Wolfhound owners train their puppies to compete in the sport of lure coursing. Certainly some of the ideas discussed here can apply to all of the sighthounds, but the topics will mainly be focused toward the Irish Wolfhound and will be based on methods that I have used or seen used. As puppies, both Finn and Clare were socialized extensively. This is one of the easiest things for an owner to do, yet it is often neglected. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a socialization as this will give the hound confidence to leave its owner’s side and will teach it to interact with other hounds. Too many times I’ve seen yearling (or older) Irish Wolfhounds attempt lure coursing that either won’t leave their owner or will return to them after only running a short distance. Sometimes the desire to run simply isn’t enough if the hound has to overcome a confidence deficiency. Socialization can be as easy as attending a puppy class, letting the puppy have playtime with other puppies, or allowing a friend to walk your puppy. The time between twelve and sixteen weeks is especially critical in developing a hound’s social skills. It is extremely important to know when to begin actually running an Irish Wolfhound puppy and to be aware of the both the physical and mental limitations of the young hound. Due to the rapid growth rate of an Irish Wolfhound, running a puppy too young or too often can cause irreparable damage to its physical structure. Certainly it is permissible as well as advisable to take young puppies out for lure coursing practice if for no other reason that the socialization.

      Field Coursing
Field coursing sets dogs on hare, fox or coyote. Field coursing is a cruel, unsporting competition where dogs are allowed to chase down and injure or kill animals such as hare fox and coyote . Dogs are judged on agility, speed, endurance, aggression in pursuit and on their success in killing the animal. Once the animal is caught, the dogs often engage in a tug of war over the animal, sometimes literally tearing the animal apart. They are often permitted to do this because some owners believe their dogs will perform better if they get a taste for blood. "Lure coursing" is a humane alternative to field coursing. In lure coursing, a bag fixed with a desirable scent is sent around a track to simulate the path of an animal. Learn about our legislative progress

When warfighters are bleeding severely on a battlefield, getting blood to them is tricky at best, because blood requires refrigeration and has a short shelf life. With this in mind, researchers for decades have been working on fluids, called hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers, that do blood's job of carrying oxygen. "No oxygen equals cell death, tissue death," said Col. Robert Vandre, of the U.S. Army Combat Casualty Care Research Program here. "Once you get below a certain level of red cells in the blood, even if you can put in volume (with intravenous fluids), you're not going to have enough oxygen and everything starts shutting down. Then you start having inflammation problems and going into shock and everything falls apart." To prevent that falling apart from happening, medical professionals' first choice for replacing lost blood will always be fresh, whole blood. "The nice things about red cells, they not only carry oxygen, ... they also help in clotting blood," Vandre said. "If you look at a blood clot, it's red. That's because it's made up of red cells that act like little sandbags. Platelets, thrombin and fibrinogen are the glue that hold all the red cells together."
