Open Field Coursing with Borzoi [ Prepared and Distributed As A Public Service by The Borzoi Club of America, Inc. May 1998 ]
This pamphlet is intended to provide answers to some of the questions you may have about open field coursing with your Borzoi, and provide an overview of the sport.
WHAT IS OPEN FIELD COURSING?
Open field coursing in the United States is the formal, organized, coursing of live game. The game consists of wild jackrabbits native to the areas being hunted. This is the only form of organized live coursing available to the American Borzoi owner. Open field coursing is held only in the Western states where live game coursing with dogs is legal.
WHEN DID OPEN FIELD COURSING START?
In the early part of the twentieth century ranchers in the western plains found coursing necessary to keep the number of predators, i.e. coyotes and wolves under control. Rabbits were also hunted as the large numbers were destroying crops. The first organized open field coursing in the United States was in California in 1959. This was the Pacheco Hunt and was sponsored by the Borzoi Club of California.

14 Lure Coursing Equipment
What are lure coursing blankets? Lure coursing blankets are the means by which the different hounds in a course are identified by the judge. They are light in weight and designed to be non-restrictive to the galloping hound. They should be made of a double stretch material and you need one in each of these colors: * high recognition yellow (bright yellow or "green yellow") * high recognition pink (hot pink). * high recognition blue (eye shattering cyan). Hare Coursing
Posted by Simon at 9/05/2007 04:32:00 PM Trapping the hares helps to control high densities of the animal which many landowners consider agricultural pests. Now obviously coursing has got sweet feck all to do with pest control. For 1 now that dogs or muzzled most hares do not die. If pest control was really the aim of the project then giving a park ranger a shot gun would be far more effective. So lets have less of the bullshit it is a sport nothing more nothing less. So the question is should it be banned? John Cregan says Hare coursing, which is thoroughly humane, is particularly popular in West Limerick and hares are very numerous around the countryside. after they have been raced and are to old to race anymore are put down and their meat shipped to France. Hares if they survive the ordeal are released back in the wild at the point where they were captured and are rarely coursed more then once a year. Horses on the other hand get a small man sitting on them for half a year beating the shite out of them with a whip for a mile or 2. So is it really much more cruel then horse racing? The reason that John Gormley is having pressure applied to him on this issue is that coursing means votes. Even though

What’s more, it leaves Mexico to clean up a mess it didn’t make.
According to the UN's Global Commission on International Migration, the number of people worldwide living outside their country of birth has doubled in the past 25 years, rising to more than 200 million peopleor about one in every 30 people on the planet. Most of these are “irregular migrants,” people who migrate without proper documents or visas. According to the commission, these numbers will inexorably grow because of the impact of globalization and growing disparities in development between rich and poor countries.
One aspect of this exodus is “transmigration.” People who leave their own poor countries typically don't do so just to end up far from home in another poor country that has even less to offer them. In the Western Hemisphere, Mexico is the most prominent gateway country.

In the northern half of Russia, hunting is done either with scenthounds or laikas. But in the south, across the vast plains and steppes, the villagers still hunt on horseback with one or two sighthounds and sometimes an eagle or falcon instead of a gun. This is a centuries old tradition of the Tartars and Cossacks who settled these regions. The proximity of this area to the Middle East probably answers the question of source, although these dogs came into the area so long ago, they are now considered indigenous breeds. On the immense steppes from the north Caucasus Mountains, west of the Caspian Sea, up through the Volga and Don River estuaries, abundant game flourished, allowing the continuation of the Cossack tradition of coursing.

There is little doubt an Afghan Hound was born to run. You see it in your hound every day. A squirrel, a bird, one of their kennel mates - they stalk and SPRING running silently and swiftly toward their "prey." The "ultimate" in exercising your hounds natural prey drive in a controlled arena has to be lure coursing. The lure may be an actual fuzzy tail, more often than not it's a white plastic bag. No matter. Lure coursing mimics the zig and zag of a real animal that is what excites your dog. Afghans run in packs of three. Though these hounds may have never seen each other before yet each seems to instinctively know their role in the "hunt." Its thrilling to watch your dog do what it was born to do! The following rules are transcribed from Country Contentment's, published in 1638 by Gervase Markham. Subheads have been added to each rule for easier reference and have modernized and standardized the spelling of words. Otherwise, the text under "rule" is verbatim from the eighth edition of Markham's book. The "interpretation" is a translation of what the rule means.
The Laws of the Leash or coursing, as they were commanded, allowed, and subscribed by Thomas late Duke of Norfolk, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
    1. The Fewterer Rule:
First therefore it was ordered, that he which was chosen Fewterer, or letter-loose of the Greyhounds, should receive the Greyhounds match to run together into his Leash, as soon as he came into the field, and to follow next to the Hare-finder till he came unto the former and no horsemen nor Footman, on pain of disgrace, to go before them, or on either side, but directly behind, the space of forty yards or thereabouts.
    Interpretation:
The Fewterer is given a pair of greyhounds to take by the leash and follows at a distance the person who finds and roots out the hare. Anyone on horseback or foot who doesn't stay about 40 yards behind the dogs will be publicly disgraced.

    Greyhound Racing 1:
    Origins in Coursing
Greyhound racing originated in an ancient sport called coursing, in which a dog chases a game animal. Scenes of what appear to be coursing have been found on Egyptian tombs dating back to before 2500 BC and the dogs depicted look very much like modern greyhounds. The greyhound is an exceptional hunting dog because of its speed and vision. Unlike most hunting dogs, the greyhound doesn't have an acute sense of smell. Instead of scenting quarry, it tends to chase moving objects, which it can spot at long distances, and it can run up to 45 miles an hour in its pursuit. In Medieval England, commoners were forbidden to own greyhounds, so the dog became a symbol of high status. The dogs roamed freely through the grounds and palaces of nobility, catching and killing rodents. Originally, coursing was a sport that exhibited a single dog's skill in sighting and catching a game animal. During the 16th century, though, it became a competitive sport, with two dogs matched against one another in a race for the game. The owners of the dogs usually had a sizeable bet on the result and, at some coursing races, spectators also gathered and placed side bets on one dog or the other. The first official coursing meet was held in 1776 at Swaffham, Norfolk, England. The rules of the Swaffham Coursing Society specified that only two greyhounds were to course a single hare and that the hare was to be given a head start of 240 yards.
