Croquet was introduced in England in 1856 and was probably brought to America in the early 1860’s. It was considered particularly suitable for women since it required considerable skills but not too much strength or technique. (Women were allegedly deficient in both). Although croquet was never popular men’s game, it had both social and economic advantages: men and women could play together, and it required little equipment and no special clothing. Lawn tennis was another popular sport for middle-class women. At first proper tennis form entailed patting the ball back and forth, without keeping score, but, according to both critics and proponents, players soon were caught up in the competitive spirit of the game, finding it an excellent method of exercise and a useful mental and physical outlet. More active than croquet or archery (which enjoyed a brief popularity in the 1870’s), tennis also appealed to men. By the 1880’s it had become the rage in fashionable summer resorts, and magazines devoted space to the proper attire to wear while playing. Goodie’s recommended "Tuxedo" suits, knitted of fine wool yarn with trim in a contrasting color, for tennis because they were both comfortable and durable.

Player of the Month: Dirk Heniges
Dirk Heniges ( ) has attended a couple of matches in his day. In fact, he has attended exactly three. Each time, he manages to escape the camera, not upset anyone, not win much, and generally ride the croquet wave. This September however, Dirk made quite a splash. After all that, Dirk secured his place in the forefront of the League by volunteering to be our new Webmaster. Even though Nick Addington ( ) still holds the reigns of the website, Dirk has volunteered to give us tech support when problems crop up, updates need to be made, and the database needs to be fixed. For this sudden streak of dedication to the League, we name Dirk our October (September) Player of the Month. Dirk is a junior majoring in Geography.

CHAPTER VIII
The Queen's Croquet-Ground
A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden: the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red. Alice thought this a very curious thing, and she went nearer to watch them, and just as she came up to them she heard one of them say, `Look out now, Five! Don't go splashing paint over me like that!' Two, Five, and Seven painting the rosebush `I couldn't help it,' said Five, in a sulky tone; `Seven jogged my elbow.' On which Seven looked up and said, `That's right, Five! Always lay the blame on others!' You'd better not talk!' said Five. `I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!' `What for?' said the one who had spoken first. `That's none of your business, Two!' said Seven. `Yes, it is his business!' said Five, `and I'll tell himit was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions.' Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun `Well, of all the unjust things' when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them, and he checked himself suddenly: the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low. `Would you tell me,' said Alice, a little timidly, `why you are painting those roses?'

7 Ways Croquet is Better than Second Life
July 30th, 2007 by Jeff VanDrimmelen Welcome to Edutechie.com! If you're new here, be sure to subscribe to my RSS feed . Thanks for visiting! Recently I posted an article questioning the usefulness of Second Life in education, to which I received mixed feedback. Last week I had the opportunity to see Dr. Julian Lombardi and Dr. Marilyn Lombardi of Duke University demonstrate a open-source peer-to-peer virtual world application called Croquet . Croquet is basically Second Life, but much more.
Note: This product does not have a distributable application at this point. This article is one of two things: a call for help, or a glimpse in the future. If you have the skills to help out with the development, please do so, otherwise you should see a downloadable application this coming fall.
Pros:
1. Scalelable - Peer to Peer Network
Only 15-25 people can get on a second life server at a time. After that you have to use multiple servers to handle it all and it consumes an enormous amount of energy (as much as a real person

How is Croquet different from other technologies that seem similar?
Answer: Croquet, as a software development environment, is more extensible than the proprietary technologies behind collaborative worlds such as Second Life , and before that ViOS . Second Life doesn't create a computational environment that belongs to its users - it uses a constrained computational environment (its servers) to capture "eyeballs" for a variety of schemes to derive revenue from them. With Croquet, users/developers may freely share, modify and view the source code (due to Croquet's liberal license), the technology is not hosted on a single organization’s server (and hence governed by that organization as was the case with ViOS and now with Second Life), and it provides a complete professional programmer’s language (Smalltalk/Squeak), integrated development environment (IDE), and class library in every distributed, running participant’s copy (the programming development environment itself is simultaneously shareable and extensible). Croquet based worlds can also be updated while the system is live and running. For more on how Croquet differs from SL, read this Some of the environments that are enabled by Croquet can superficially resemble those of Sun's

March 27th, 2007 Update 9 is available. See the download page. If you encounter problems, send mail to croquetcollaborative@charter.net Convened by computing pioneers Alan Kay and David Reed , the Croquet project is creating software that allows any combination of people in the world to simultaneously and spontaneously work within the same applications at the same time. Moreover, users can seamlessly communicate from within the application, even as they collaboratively create and modify these systems while they are using them. It sounds like science-fiction, but the first versions of the basic technology exist today. There are several institutions and individuals worldwide who are working on various parts of the core technology and applications. Working within the original Croquet Committee and the emerging Croquet Consortium Today, our immediate goal is to make it easy for thought leaders to try a real sample application, showing how much better software and telecommunications can be, and allowing them to participate in this development. Thus we are now producing both system software and an application. This lead application is in early education Posted in Uncategorized

Wow: 3D operating system, Open Croquet
Open Croquet , which is a 3D world. Something like Second Life, but runs P2P. We have just seen a new world. You have just witnessed one of the first public demos of a 3D hyperlink in the system. You can walk from world-to-world. You can collaborate with people in new ways. Another demo? A 3D spreadsheet that can let you work in 3D space together on numbers with other people. This is rough, early-adopterish, but once you see this you realize a new kind of computing experience is coming. See that chess set in the image above? You can move around it. You can spin it. You can zoom toward it. And, if you touch it you are playing chess. All running P2P. No centralized servers needed. It's remarkable. They showed how you could just "step into" a new virtual world. Just move toward something that looks like a window and you "dive into" that Window and are instantly in a new world. In that new world there would be new people, new things to see. Sometimes I pinch myself at what I get to be among the first human beings to experience.
