Pop Landscapes: Michael Robinson
Experimental filmmaker Michael Robinson in person! The Dryden Theatre
Monday, April 14th
The film and video work of Michael Robinson consists of equal parts landscape cinematography and pop culture mashup, and it is through the interaction between these two seemingly disparate modes of filmmaking that his work becomes transcendent. Milking out every drop of saccharine bliss from pop songs, Michael sweetens the normally doom-ridden theme of humanity’s failure to achieve heaven on Earth in Victory Over the Sun And We All Shine On (2006) is interested in the harmonies and discordances brought out by positioning and repositioning the natural world around the virtual, while you don’t bring me flowers (2005) investigates our fascination with pictorial tourism through a slideshow of National Geographic two-page landscape spreads. 2007’s Light is Waiting uses a heavily manipulated, very special episode of Full House as fodder to launch in to an examination of our media’s colonialist tendencies toward the exotic Other. Other films to be screened include The General Returns From One Place to Another Tidal Chiquita and the Soft Escape (2003), and his most recent video

Posted by Yanko Design in All Archive Outdoor October 4, 2007 2:28 am, 4453 Views This guest post on Urban Croquet is by designer Alice Kaiserswerth. When John Jaques made croquet an overnight craze in England 150 years ago, he packaged a game that fit perfectly into the physical and social spaces of the mid 19th Century - casual, fun, social, and played in the spacious gardens of the gentry or any clearing sufficient to install hoops and stakes. The free-wheeling spirit of those formative days of croquet is gone forever. Or is it? All parts of the croquet design follow a single design language linked by materials, colors and shapes - not just the croquet equipment but also clothing, bags, fashion accessories and shoes. With the overall concept in place, I identifed Adidas Originals as the brand to work with - the perfect fit for what I had in mind. They look to the past for inspiration, but create new designs for the authentic and contemporary products of the future. All the products of the brand have a clear foundation in sport but are meant for lifestyle and street wear. Alice designed a straightforward solution to the problem of installing hoops on hard surfaces: the tops of the stick-in hoops shown here on grass are weighted and flattened, so they can be turned upside down and set flat on hard surfaces like this asphalt parking lot. A thin layer of rubber prevents slide.

December 12, 2006 - A very sad day... a GMCS friend cashed in his chips today. Remembering Steely Dan: November 20, 2006 - Yeah, I know I really slacked this time around. I think the tournament was held on September 2nd? Labor Day? I'm just now updating the site. In all honesty, I lost the freakin' media card from the camera and didn't have any pics to use. Fortunately, I found it when I was cleaning for the recent Thanksgiving festivities. I won't have the pic and wicket pages done until I get some more pics from others. This pic of our winner Antonio is one of the few I currently have. On to the results... As mentioned, Antonio Lorenzo Tabacchi Fernandez won his THIRD Golden Mallet victory. A fine player, for sure. He came out on top in a solid final round. I can't recall who he knocked out to win, but I think it was Jill Bowman. Jill always comes in second. One of these days, she's gonna win it. It was a great weekend with lots of beer guzzling and croquet. As we did a couple years ago, we followed it up with a nice float trip on the Little Miami River the next day. I'm still working on website stuff in bits and pieces..

Among the many traditions at St. John's, croquet is a great pastime among the students.  The team is nationally ranked and competes annually against our neighbor, the U.S. Naval Academy. The annual springtime match for the Annapolis Cup is held on the graceful front lawn of the college. The Navy band plays, picnickers abound, the alumni tent offers cucumber sandwiches, chocolates, and champagne.  And the goodwill that the opponents display after each match is no clenched-teeth affair, but rather a hearty handshake for a job well done. Health care, the war, the economy,

very important issues to some people, but what

Politicians use these issues to distract voters
from the fact that none of them have anything
that even approaches being a comprehensive
croquet season, and many probably don't even
own a mallet. At the North Side Croquet Club, we have a plan for a croquet season extending from April through October, from Mosquito Park to Ruby Hill, from Tuesday's at 6 until Tuesday's at 9 or 10. And every game will have beer. Every game will be fun. Every game will have 9 wickets and 2 posts and a sore loser. This is our promise to America, and our promise to America's enemies as well. So on April 22nd, dust off your mallet and take a stand for your freedom to get drunk and play yard games with your friends. Season opener April 22nd at Wolff Park C ROQUET C ROQUET

Vince and Beth Campagna don't get out much anymore. Ever since the Holland, Pa., couple converted an unused strip of their backyard into a manicured horseshoe pit, the good times are found right at home. "I should charge a cover to all of the people who want to come play in my backyard," Beth says. The Campagnas' court goes way beyond a metal stake driven into the dirt. It's an all-out landscaping feature. Sand pits sit in the center of two raised gravel beds, backed by low walls of pressure-treated lumber. The backstops control errant horseshoes and offer a handy shelf to hold a drink while someone is pitching. Low retaining walls built of mortarless concrete block protect spectators and provide seating between games. Lamp posts flank the pits and low-voltage lighting is tucked into the shrubbery.

About the Artwork Influential 19th century artist Winslow Homer (1836 – 1910) broke from Impressionism to produce realistic, robust images of American life. An illustrator, oil painter and watercolorist, Homer created battlefront illustrations for “Harper’s Weekly” before moving on to tranquil farm and rural scenes. Homer is famous for his energetic, epic seascapes, as well as portrayals of man pitted against the rugged wilderness. His fresh, spontaneous style and exquisite expression of atmosphere had a revolutionary impact on watercolor art. This high-quality art print is expertly produced to capture the vivid color and exceptional detail of the original.

It can be likened to playing a combination of Snooker and Chess on grass. Through the strategic use of extra turns awarded for particular moves, players are able to build "breaks" of several hoops in a single turn.
