THOMPSON EXCERPTED FROM PHOOKA NO.425 Croquet . Commentary by Phooka editor Reginald Bakeley may be read by following the link at the end of this article. The proper croquet garb, like the game itself, is determined by quiet good taste. There are of course bespoke, chic labels seen more and more on trendy courts and these are accepted without comment, but essentially the rules for dress are flexible; limited only by practical rules of comfort. The game is a demanding one, and as such demands a comfortable uniform. Freedom of motion is the ultimate criterion. Shoes The Shirt Skillful players at any level will take every advantage to improve their game. Many croquet buffs believe the generously cut shirt provides a more fluid swing and so recommend wearing a shirt a size larger than normally worn. Opponents of the bigger-shirt theory hold that the extra material may in fact impede the swing by increasing wind resistance; logically, they extend their thinking by wearing snug, wrinkle-free pullover short-sleeved shirts, preferably of a synthetic material. The synthetic fabric, according to these theorists, will not absorb moisture and will therefore be of lighter weight during the course of the play. Too, they feel the synthetic fabric will move more freely through the air.

Open Croquet Gets Browser with Cobalt
Croquet , an open source for developing virtual worlds, has always gotten a fair amount of interest, particularly from educators , as a way to build custom multi-user environments. One of the biggest complaints, though, is that they were hard to use. 3D virtual environments generally are notoriously difficult to get around in for non-gamers, but Croquet didn't even have an easy, standard way to access its worlds. Now it has Cobalt , an open source browser built on Croquet with a more recognizable UI.

Croquet
From LoveToKnow 1911
CROQUET (from Fr. trot, a crook, or crooked stick), a lawn game played with balls, mallets, hoops and two pegs. The game has been evolved, according to some writers, from the paillemaille which was played in Languedoc at least as early as the 13th century. Under the name of le jeu de la crosse or la crosserie, a similar game was at the same period immensely popular in Normandy , and especially at Avranches , but the object appears to have been to send the ball as far as possible by driving it with the mallet (see Sports et jeux d'adresse, 1904, p. 203). Pall Mall , a fashionable game in England in the time of the Stuarts, was played with a ball and a mallet, and with two hoops or a hoop and a peg, the game being won by the player who ran the hoop or hoops and touched the peg under certain conditions in the fewest strokes. Croquet certainly has some resemblance to paille-maille, played with more hoops and more balls. It is said that the game was brought to Ireland from the south of France , and was first played on Lord Lonsdale's lawn in 1852, under the auspices of the eldest daughter of Sir Edmund Macnaghten. It came to

Network-based telephoning technology built into the Croquet virtual environment will make it possible for a person to speak spontaneously and naturally with anyone in his or her immediate vicinity. Instant messaging and asynchronous text-based forms of online communication will also be available. Faculty will be able to simulate the simultaneity we take for granted in the traditional face-to-face classroom by gathering their students together to witness a live demonstration in real-time and accompanied by a synchronized question-
and-answer session. Small groups of learners and researchers can work together on a shared document, brainstorm on a whiteboard, set group goals, explore websites together, and explore nearby disciplinary and interdisciplinary materials, extending their network of professional contacts outward beyond their department, their chosen field, even their campus, to reach colleagues a world away.

Here's part of a story that ran a few years ago in the Metro Detroit Magazine:
Cutthroat Players Shatter Croquet's Genteel Reputation
By Maureen McGerty / Special to The Detroit News
WATERLOO If you love the mental challenges of pool and chess, but you'd like to pick up a new outdoor pursuit as the weather warms up, consider croquet. This reputedly genteel game can get really competitive, as you'll discover when the Waterloo Croquet Club members deliver wicked shots on its court. Anyone is welcome to watch. "It's cutthroat," says Bill Darwin II, who founded WACA with his parents, Bill Sr. and JoAnne, in 1994. "You have no friends in croquet." The game that's played among clubs in Michigan generally follows rules set by the United States Croquet Association. "What we play is not ordinary back yard croquet," Darwin says. "What people play in their back yards is called nine-wicket. The configuration of the court is different. We play American six-wicket. It's more strategic. There's offensive and defensive play."
