Lock It Up
March 31st, 2006 Think like a thief. You’re strolling along, minding your own business, when you come across a perfectly good bike, leaning up against a tree. You can hardly believe your eyes, but … it isn’t locked! Now you didn’t leave your house this morning, thinking, “I think I’ll steal a bike today.” It’s not like bikes are your specialty or anything. But this one’s hot and it’s practically got an invitation flashing: STEAL ME!!! So you do. In 6 seconds flat, you’re gone. That’s all it takes. You think you can just lean your bike against a tree while you pop in to grab a cup of coffee and maybe you can. But if you can’t get back and put your hands on that bike in 6 seconds flat, you can’t catch the guy that grabs it. The short version? Lock it up. Not sometimes. Any time. All the time. If you’re not on it, lock it. These are the tips:
  • DO NOT lock it to something that can be stolen along with it. Locking the front wheel to the frame, for instance, is not going to do you any good. DO lock it to something fixed and unmovable. If it can be cut (like a chain link fence), bent (like a tree) or broken (like a flimsy rail), your bike is not secure.

26. The Cyclist Lifestyle -- The Culture Of Cycling Enthusiasts And Bike People
Cyclists have their own character, lifestyle, and traits articles on their culture, motivations, and attitudes.
http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/lifestyle/index.htm
DIRECTORY: The Cyclist Lifestyle Bike people share common traits and a culture of their own that may seem eccentric to others. An explanation of the bicycling lifestyle and articles about cycling life and bicycle culture. What is a cyclist? When was the term first used? Is there a cycling lifestyle and a bike culture? What are some of the characteristics of the cycling life? Why is riding a bicycle worthwhile? What kind of bike is desirable? What do old bicycles mean to a cyclist? What characteristics does a "true cyclist" or a "serious cyclist" have? What should our attitude be towards the latest cycling gadgets and gismos? Why don't all cyclists behave alike in traffic? How should cyclists deal with humor directed against them? How can we get along with motorists? Bike Pages Home Page The Cyclist Lifestyle Bike Commuting and Transportation Bicycle Camping and Touring Cycling Health and Fitness Bicycling Advocacy ... Comments on This Page
The Cyclist Lifestyle
T wo questions immediately suggest themselves: 1) What is a cyclist? 2) Do cyclists have a common lifestyle? R esearch articles and statistical reports avoid "cyclist," perhaps to prevent confusion with motorcyclists, using "bicyclist" or "pedalcyclist" instead. Newspapers, on the other hand, use "cyclist" to describe anyone riding a bike. History can help, as the first recorded use of "cyclist" (in 1881) was as the name of a magazine for bicycle enthusiasts. Therefore, in my opinion, "cyclist" is most accurately used to describe people who are committed to bicycling. Two other terms are frequently used: "biker" is commonly used by non-cyclists, and "bike people," around since the early 70's, is used by cyclists who wish to emphasize the bicycling lifestyle or culture.

Home ... For Further Reading What is weight cycling? Weight cycling is the repeated loss and regain of body weight. This sometimes happens to people who go on weight-loss diets. A small cycle may include loss and regain of 5 to 10 lbs. In a large cycle, weight can change by 50 lbs or more. Is weight cycling harmful to my health? Experts are not sure if weight cycling leads to health problems. However, some studies suggest a link to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease, and other problems. One study showed other problems may be linked to weight cycling as well. This study showed that women who weight cycle gain more weight over time than women who do not weight cycle. Binge eating (when a person eats a lot of food while feeling out of control) was also linked to women who weight cycle. The same study showed that women who weight cycle were also less likely to use physical activity to control their weight. Top If I weight cycle after a diet, will I gain more weight than I had before the diet? Will I have less muscle?
