  • 100 contest chart In 1988 the Wall Street Journal began a contest that was inspired by Burton Malkiel’s book A Random Walk Down Wall Street . In the book, the Princeton Professor theorized that "a blindfolded monkey throwing darts at a newspaper’s financial pages could select a portfolio that would do just as well as one carefully selected by experts." The Journal set out to create an entertaining contest to test Malkiel's theory and give its readers some new investment ideas in the process. Wall Street Journal staff members typically play the role of the monkeys (the Journal listed liability insurance as one reason for not going all the way and actually using live monkeys). The contest has become a popular feature for the Journal and has also drawn much interest and commentary from journalists, investors, and academics. Several academic papers have been written about the contest and its implications (summaries and links are included below).

Sun 2008 Mar 30 - Singles Chicago Qualifier Winners
Posted: Sun 2008/Mar/30 09:41 by tkriese Congratulations to Jimmy Nolan (A: Team Extreme) and Jason McGuire (B2: Dartgasm) for winning the Singles Chicago Qualifier Tourney held at Beefy's Cabin. Jimmy and Jason will represent SCVDA at the WCDO $1500 Open Singles Chicago Tournament on April 26. Jimmy and Jason bested a field of twelve darters from A league (six), B1 league (three) and B2 league (three) who showed up to claim a WCDO entry. After a lot of competitive darts in a couple rounds of play, the field narrowed to just four finalists: Jimmy, Jason, Brad Morton (A: HDIY) and Jhun Catayag, Jr (A: Pinoy Chamba). Jimmy threw his usual stellar darts to light up the field and take the first entry and Jason battled hard against his A-league opponents before clinching the second entry. Way to represent the B-leaguers, Jason! The league is happy to pay Jimmy and Jason's entry fees to the sold-out WCDO tourney, and we've given them each an SCVDA shirt to wear while they kick butt in April. Congratulations guys, do us proud!
