      1. What is dogfighting? 2. How does it cause animal suffering? The injuries inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dogfights are frequently severe, even fatal. The American pit bull terriers used in the majority of these fights have been specifically bred and trained for fighting and are unrelenting in their attempts to overcome their opponents. With their extremely powerful jaws, they are able to inflict severe bruising, deep puncture wounds and broken bones. Dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after the fight. Other animals are often sacrificed as well. Some owners train their dogs for fights using smaller animals such as cats, rabbits or small dogs. These "bait" animals are often stolen pets or animals obtained through "free to good home" advertisements. 3. Are there other concerns?

    edit Origins of domestic breeding
As with all domestic dogs, the ancestors of all breeds of game dogs were wolves . The foundation breed of the fighting dog was, in its outward appearance, a large, low, heavy breed with a powerful build and strongly developed head. Dog breeding in its earliest stages was carried out systematically, with the desire for specialization. It is believed that the development of individual breeds took place in narrow geographic areas, corresponding to the performance required in these regions. Selection for performance, complemented by the breeding for suitable body forms, leads to the formation of breeds. The task of the fighting dog demanded specific basic anatomical traits and temperamental features. The anatomy of the fighting dog requires an imposing outward form to instill fear, with the foundation breed naturally large, low-slung, heavy, powerfully built, with a strongly developed head, powerful biting apparatus and a threatening voice. The goal is to breed a dog that will attack animals but is docile and affectionate toward humans. All breeds with a character suitable for protecting humans and fighting wild animals may be considered for dogfighting. Special attention is often given to the

Dogfighting emerged in World War I. In this time, aircraft are initially used as mobile observation vehicles and early pilots gave little thought to aerial combat—enemy pilots at first simply exchanged waves. Intrepid pilots decided to interfere with enemy reconnaissance by improvised means, including throwing bricks grenades and sometimes rope , in hopes of entangling them in the enemy plane's propeller . This progressed to pilots firing hand-held guns at enemy planes. Then

But we agree with hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons that Cruel's Not Cool Listen to Simmons or see poster Contrary to what some people believe, it is NOT in a dog's nature to fight for no reason . In the wild, wolves or dogs may fight over territory. But dogs don't fight just for the fun of it! Dogs are social animals who - in the wild - hunt together, sleep together, and play together. It is a dog's nature to respect the pack leader and get along with the rest of the pack. Not to fight. Dogfighting
A dogfight is a cruel activity in which two dogs are forced to fight for the sake of human entertainment and profit. The dogs, usually pit bulls, Rottweilers, or Dobermans, are raised under horrific conditions and abusively trained to be aggressive. Humane officers and other law enforcement agents routinely break up illegal dogfighting rings and confiscate dogfighting paraphernalia, including treadmills used to build the dog's endurance and drugs used to numb pain from injuries or to "jazz up" the dogs. They often find mesh bags, which are used to suspend kittens, rabbits, puppies, and other small prey above the dogs to encourage a "fighting spirit."
Sadly, they often find many dead and dying dogs, too. Dogs who do survive often sustain serious injuries, such as broken bones and crushed cartilage. Many suffer and die from blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or days after a fight.
If you think dogfighting is taking place in your area, please contact your local humane society or police department to investigate. You can also help spread the word about dogfighting by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper. For tips on writing effective letters, see "

Wyoming followed Idaho, whose governor signed similar legislation last week. With the case of jailed former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick shedding light on the practice, Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle is calling it a new era for dogs and a moment for Americans to savor. Dog fighting involves more than 250,00 dogs each year and is a criminal enterprising involving as many as 140,000 human participants, HSUS says.

Dog fighting is a cruel and brutal practice. The abuses are so gruesome that even experienced investigators are shocked by what they discover at dog fighting raids. For the sake of human profit, the dogs are trained to kill. To ensure their aggression dogs are beaten, chained and fed gunpowder, illegal drugs and even live animals and sometimes they are not fed at all for long periods of time. In the end, dogs that do not win are either killed or left to die horrific and painful deaths. The Federal Dog Protection Act addresses these issues of cruelty, providing much needed protection to the animals that are pulled into this barbaric blood sport. This bill is necessary to adequately punish anyone who not only operates and engages in, but also attends and otherwise supports, dog-fighting events. In addition, the bill bans the use of the U.S. Postal Service to mail dog fighting paraphernalia and has a civil suit provision. That's why your help is crucial in putting an end to dog fighting. Sign this petition and let's protect dogs from this heinous practice once and for all.

February 18, 2004 For years the Pima County Sheriff's Department found the chewed-up bodies of dead dogs in the Arizona desert. But it wasn't until four years ago that the truth behind the killings emerged: Stolen family pets were being used in bloody training exercises by dog fighting rings. Printer Friendly Email to a Friend SHARE Digg StumbleUpon Reddit RELATED Like all good detectives, Mike Duffey of the Pima County Sheriff's Department pieced together the clues. Four years ago he was assigned to investigate animal crimes full-time. Duffey knew the dead dogs found in the county's rural areas weren't strays, because the pads of their feet and their nails had not been worn down from a life on the streets. So Duffey checked the lost-and-stolen-animal reports kept by the local humane society. "We found that a lot of the dogs found in these desert dumping areas were in fact, at one time, [reported] stolen," said Duffey, co-chair of the Animal Cruelty Taskforce of Southern Arizona, an organization made up of law-enforcement, criminal-justice, and animal-protection professionals. "So we began looking for a connection."

CBSSports.com wire reports
SURRY, Va. The trial of suspended NFL quarterback Michael Vick on state dogfighting charges has been delayed. Vick was scheduled to stand trial April 2. The Surry County Commonwealth Attorney's office says no new date has been set yet. The trial will be rescheduled on March 25. Vick is serving a federal 23-month prison term in Leavenworth, Kan. Officials had already delayed the trials of co-defendants Quanis Phillips and Purnell Peace. All three pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiring to run an interstate dogfighting operation on land owned by Vick. The delays are based on the logistics of transporting the men back to Virginia, which is the responsibility of the local prosecutor's office. AP NEWS
