Dog Fighting Measure Wins Unanimous Senate Approval Save Email Print Posted: 2:00 PM Mar 12, 2008 Last Updated: 4:07 PM Mar 12, 2008 0 comments A A A ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Senate wants to toughen the state's laws against dog fighting. Senators unanimously approved a bill Wednesday making it a crime to attend a dog fight and also making it illegal to breed dogs for fighting. The move to make Georgia's laws stiffer comes after Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was sent to federal prison after pleading guilty to dogfighting charges. The bill's sponsor, state Senator Chip Rogers, says Georgia currently has among the weakest dog fighting laws in the nation.

ALL OF OUR AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIERS ARE ADBA REGISTERED. Dog Fighting Dog fighting is a sadistic "contest" in which two dogs—specifically bred, conditioned, and trained to fight—are placed in a pit (generally a small arena enclosed by plywood walls) to fight each other, for the spectators' gambling and entertainment. Fights average nearly an hour in length and often last more than two hours. Dogfights end when one of the dogs is no longer willing or able to continue. In addition to these dogfights, there are reports of an increase in disorganized, more spontaneous street fights in urban areas. The injuries inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dogfights are frequently severe, even fatal. The American pit bull terriers used in the majority of these fights have been specifically bred and trained for fighting and are unrelenting in their attempts to overcome their opponents. With their extremely powerful jaws, they are able to inflict severe bruising, deep puncture wounds, and broken bones.

Cruelty may link to dog fighting

Sunday, July 29, 2007 Do you think law enforcement should focus more on dog fighting and cracking down on it? Yes No I don't know STORY TOOLS Share and Enjoy FORT PIERCE Some call it a sport, but law enforcement officials across the country are cracking down on what’s become a growing illegal activity — dog fighting. Fresh on the heels of dog fighting charges against Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Michael Vick, the Fort Pierce community is raising questions on whether dog fighting is becoming a problem here. In April, federal authorities rescued 52 fighting pit bulls from Vick’s property. Though dog fighting goes on everyday in this country, the Vick case in recent months has really put the spotlight on the gruesome bloodsport. Last week, law enforcement officials seized 30 pit bulls from the Fort Pierce home of 29-year-old Nahume Belvilus in the 200 block of South 24th Street. Police believe the dogs might have been used as “bait” animals to train attack dogs used for dog fighting. Police are in the beginning stages of the investigation and are trying to figure out if the dogs were sent somewhere for fighting and how Belvilus obtained the animals.
