Its fundamental purpose is to develop, through standardized progressive training methods, a horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to perform, thereby maximizing its potential as a riding horse . At the peak of a dressage horse's gymnastic development, it can smoothly respond to a skilled rider's minimal aids by performing the requested movement while remaining relaxed and appearing effortless. Dressage is occasionally referred to as "Horse Ballet " (cf. nl:Dressuur ). Although the discipline has ancient roots, dressage was first recognized as an important equestrian pursuit in the West during the Renaissance . The great European riding masters of that period developed a sequential training system that has changed little since then and classical dressage is still considered the basis of trained modern dressage.

Dressage World Cup News - Jane's Journal Friday afternoon (March 28) after schooling I went to the farm where Mak was born in a town called Dussen 30 min away from s'Hertogenbosch. Mak's mom Elanor is huge, she is a Gelders horse and Mak is a riding type. The first thing I noticed were the traditional wooden clogs that Henk and his son Martin Hoogward were wearing. Henk jogged out Elanor several times in his wooden clogs, he and she both still move quite well, Elanor is 23 and Henk is 73. We went in for coffee and looked at photos of Mr. Hoogward's horses. Mak's half brother is a Gelders type and pulls the Golden Carriage for the Queen in the Netherlands; Henk has bred some very good horses. Saturday started with a sound check at 7.30am, I made it with 5 minutes to spare. I cried from hearing my music in the Brabant Halle. I was living my dreams and it was quite emotional, I wanted to savor every moment. I schooled Mak in the morning while Isabel and Anky rode, what can anyone say but wow! They are as good as you imagine. I went back to the hotel for a nap, and then it was show time.

Glorification of the Ego Website Last Updated:
3rd April 2008 The French riders do not plan to boycott the Olympic Games in Hong Kong riots are going on in Tibet's capital Lhasa with the Tibetan population fighting against the disgraceful occupation and domination of Tibet by China, world wide speculation has been caused to boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to make an international statement that human rights are violated in Tibet. French Olympic medal winning eventing rider Nicolas Touzaint made the following ridiculously stupid statement in an article in Libération. "People ask us if we should go to the Olympic Games. I'll be honest: everything that happens outside the sport, does not interest me. Not because I don't want to know what currently happens over there. I'm focused on the Games, for which I have prepared myself for years. It's not my job to tell what policy China has to carry out. It's my job to ride horses." It is exactly this kind of lackadaisical attitude that causes disinterestedness for the welfare of other people in the world and prevents their progress in life ! Though boycotting the Olympic Games is not necessary (the spirit of the Olympics is to bring the world together), raising awareness for the intolerable Chinese dictatorship over Tibet absolutely is. Riders, or any athlete going to the Games, who can not rise above the selfish glorification of their ego desperately need to take a broader perspective on life. They need to look outside their box, which is dominated by their own material well-being. Making such statements, as Touzaint did, only proves their ignorance. They should either shut up or follow people who do have an opinion and can help make the world a better place.

Foreword
This website concerns what a lot of people normally call 'Classical Dressage'. I prefer to call it 'Traditional Dressage', since 'classical' is such an over-used word. 'Classical' usually referes to the Greeks and the Romans before the birth of Christ, or possibly to the art of the latter half of the 18th and the early 19th centuries (Websters.com). It also means 'Standard and authoritative rather than new or experimental' which I guess is closer, but that takes away the possibility of experiments and inventions based on standards. In out scientific times, that would be a shame. Another shame is that many dressage trainers, even, or especially the more dubious ones, claim to be 'Classical' in order to justify themselves and put themselves above criticism. There's no licence for calling oneself a 'Classical Dressage' instructor, and there's no clear specifications to what is classical or not. As Dr Thomas Ritter says on his 'Classical Dressage Discussion Group' forum, the old masters didn't even call it 'classical'. They just called it dressage.

    Welcome to The Dressage Foundation
Lendon Gray Appointed President and CEO of The Dressage Foundation
The Dressage Foundation proudly announced following a special meeting of its Board of Directors, that Lendon Gray will become the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Dressage Foundation, effective September 1, 2008. "Her appointment grows out of a Management Transition Plan that has been conducted over the past year by the Foundation's Board and Staff, to replace John Boomer, President and CEO, and his wife, Lynn, Administrative Director, who, as sole staff members, have led, administered and managed The Dressage Foundation for the past ten years," said Major General Jonathan Burton, Chairman of The Foundation Board. "And, the Boomers have done an outstanding job, in the opinion of the Board and the dressage community," Burton added. John Boomer stated, "We are so excited about Lendon taking the leadership reins of The Dressage Foundation, as she has just piled one high accomplishment on top of another for so many years now, and has deservedly reached an exalted pinnacle in our beloved sport." Boomer and the Foundation Board have assigned Lendon Gray the principal function of leading The Dressage Foundation to a higher plateau, financially and programmatically, thereby enabling it to make an ever-larger footprint on the sport of Dressage. "I am a bit intimidated to try to step into the shoes of Lowell and John Boomer,” Gray said. “For the past 19 years through their efforts and contacts with many of dressage's greatest supporters, The Dressage Foundation has made it possible for so many people of all ages and levels of riding to be inspired, to improve their riding, to elevate their teaching, and to gain appreciation for the challenges and value of dressage. I am however exhilarated by the opportunity to expand on the base that The Dressage Foundation has provided for the advancement of amateurs, youth, and instructors as well as elite riders. Some of my first goals are to create opportunities to educate our instructors in teaching skills and to bring dressage opportunities to riders from other disciplines and 'alternate' breeds."
