There are two traditional terms used to describe a person involved in falconry: a falconer flies a falcon; an austringer flies a hawk ( accipiter ). In modern falconry, buzzards are now commonly used, and the words " hawking " and " hawker " have become used so much to mean petty travelling traders, so "falconer" and "falconry" now apply to all use of trained birds of prey to catch game.

Falconry was probably introduced to Europe around AD 400, when the Huns and Alans invaded from the East. Frederick II of Hohenstaufen has been noted as one of the early European noblemen to take an interest in falconry. He is believed to have obtained firsthand knowledge of Arabic falconry during wars in the region (between June 1228–June 1229). He obtained a copy of Moamyn 's manual on falconry and had it translated into Latin by Theodore of Antioch. Frederick himself made corrections to the translation in 1241 resulting in

Falconry is an art. It requires long hours, constant devotion, finesse, subtlety and skill. The falconer must train a bird of prey to fly free, hunt for a human being and then accept a return to captivity. "Falconry is not a hobby; it’s a lifestyle," according to Ted Benzon, administrator for the falconry program for South Dakota’s Game Fish & Parks Department. Falconers must devote time to their birds each and every day, 365 days a year. It is not for everyone. It is not a suitable pastime for children. In addition, it takes a thick skin. Animal-rights activists and some environmentalists condemn falconers; some hunters claim falcons interfere with "their" hunting; and many falconers have lost a bird to inept or ill-intentioned hunters. Our Mission
Core Beliefs
At The Falconry & Raptor Education Foundation, we believe that if falconry is to continue to grow and flourish the general public must be taught, through exposure, about both birds of prey and falconry. Hal Webster, a prominent American falconer says in his latest book, "Falconry, because of the small number of practitioners, will achieve strength and recognition ONLY through strong, central sports groups of dedicated individuals." At the Falconry & Raptor Education Foundation we believe the more people that understand the true nature of the sport the stronger the sport will be in the long term. The Falconry & Raptor Education Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to The advancing of two principles, Understanding through Exposure and Excellence through Education.

http://www.arab.net/falconry/
Falconry
Hunting with birds of prey probably originated with the nomadic peoples of the Asiatic plains. The nomads used their tame falcons to help procure the food necessary for survival, in perhaps one of the first methods of hunting ever used by man. Later, falconry developed into a sport, and this fascinating co-operation between man and bird is one of the oldest of all open-air pastimes. Falconry has long been regarded as a noble art. The falconer was seen as a figure of authority - mounted on his horse, surrounded by his hunting companions and with his falcon descending from the sky to rest on his hand. As he controlled his falcon, so he controlled his territory. Throughout history the falcon has been the symbol of high birth and luxury, and its care and training have always been given particular importance. It is known as a superlative hunter, and is particularly valuable in the desert, where climatic conditions are extreme and no protection from the elements is available. Here, the falcon can pursue its prey from a great distance, and with a speed and accuracy second to none. It is no wonder that the desert nomads have always appreciated the stamina and hunting instincts of the falcon. The Bedouin people in particular used this bird to hunt game, which provided an important and nutritious addition to an otherwise monotonous diet. Today, the Arabian Peninsula is one of the last places in the world where falconry remains an important sporting activity. Although falconry clubs do exist in America and in almost all European countries, it is in the Gulf region that the sport is held in truly high regard and commands the greatest interest. The people of the Gulf have a strong personal commitment to falconry and ensure that it is practised in the correct manner, with the proper respect due to Islamic customs.

Falconry, one of the world's oldest hunting sports, is defined as the taking of wild quarry in its natural state and habitat by means of a trained raptor. No one knows for sure when and where falconry began but, based on pictoral records, it is thought that it originated in either Asia or the Middle East about 4,000 years ago. Prior to the invention of firearms in the early 17th century, raptors were used as a method of obtaining food. The term 'falconry' covers all trained birds of prey, not just the birds known as falcons.

Breaking through the barriers to a new future for falconry! FAQs Definition - We define falconry as a hunting partnership between human(s) and trained raptor(s) held for that purpose. History - Membership - While the Falconry Alliance appreciates the assistance and donations of U.S. falconers as well as those of our friends abroad, we are not a membership organization, as the politics of such an organization hamper it from acting swiftly when necessary. There is an advisory board which makes crucial decisions, allowing us to act wisely as well as swiftly and forcefully. The Falconry Alliance is NOT a club . It's an organization, specifically established to enact timely changes to the legislation and regulation affecting falconers. By narrowing the scope of our organization to such matters, remaining undistracted by meets, etc., we'll be in the very best possible position to enact signficant positive change. The Falconry Alliance is not opposed to NAFA. NAFA remains a worthwhile club which has done much good for the falconry community. Both are valuable, each serving different needs.

Hunting falcon with hood and bell.
by Shawn E. Carroll A swift bird, gliding high above the grassy plain, is the focal point of a group of hunters scattered below. The falcon, its identity betrayed by its size, speed, and shape appears as merely a speck cutting across the sky like a shooting star. It suddently tucks its wings and begins to dive, its stream-lined silhouette growing slightly larger, until a flock of mallards on the small lake take notice and begin frantically to disperse. But for one duck, slightly too young and inexperienced, it is too late. The peregrine has already chosen its feathered target, and the duck is killed instantly as the peregrine slams its razor-sharp talons into its flesh. The two birds fall to the ground together as the men emit a muffled cheer and begin trekking toward the landing site to recover the prey and the falcon. This mystical scene has been repeated for thousands of years, from the sands of Arabia to the mountains of East Asia or the prairies of the American Great Plains. Little has changed fundamentally in the sport or, as some would argue the

Welcome to the pages of the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey.
Our organization is dedicated to the preservation of the ancient art of falconry, a hunting tradition defined as ' taking quarry in its natural state and habitat by means of trained birds of prey'. Preserving falconry involves maintaining not only the traditional culture that builds practical skills of empathy with animals, but also the conservation of raptors and their prey through preservation of natural habitats. We therefore encourage falconry within the context of sustainable use of wildlife. We also promote ecological studies and veterinary research on birds of prey and, where appropriate, domestic breeding of raptors for falconry. Including such species as Peregrine falcons, Goshawks, Saker and Gyr falcons and all other species of raptors in whatever part of the world they may be used for falconry and hunting.

Ancient Falconry
- 6 Jan 2001 By Keith Dobney Page 1 of 6 Click here for others comments about this article Falconry has long been regarded as a noble sport, and it has a very ancient pedigree. According to traditional views, people first began to use tame birds of prey for hunting game in central Asia during the first or second millennium BC. Through trade and other contacts, the practice then extended westwards into the Middle East, and eventually to Europe. But that theory raises a major puzzle. The first artistic views of falconry come not from the Far East, but from Turkey. Several carvings from around 1500 BC show a large bird on the fist of a human figure. Grasped in the same fist is the figure of a hare (presumably the quarry) held by the back legs. In both cases, some researchers have interpreted these carvings as purely religious or symbolic scenes. But if these examples do indeed depict hawking, then the sport is at least 3,500 years old in Western Eurasia. New meat on old bones
Excavation at Quermez Dere in Northern Iraq Photo - Keith Dobney In recent years, archaeologists have excavated many early human settlements in Israel, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Iran which date back to 8000-10,000 BC. Among the remains, they have consistently uncovered the bones of birds of prey. Most researchers interpret these bones as remnants of food left by the humans living at those sites, or as elements of religious activities.
