Welcome to Ken's Webpage Visitor No.
My name is Ken Knowles, I have always had ferrets and dogs, when working on a farm or just walking in the fields I have always had a dog and some ferrets and a few nets with me. I have bread all sorts of ferrets, some very good ones and some not so good and some that will always be wild. I also breed African Hedgehogs and fly Radio Control Model Aircraft. Me when I was young Me now Me flying Ferreting is an art, not just a matter of laying a net over a rabbit hole, throwing a ferret down and hoping to get a rabbit out. Your nets have to be laid out so they don't get stuck on twigs and brambles and will not close when a rabbit runs into it. Your ferret need to be fit and not just taken from it's cage after an easy summer and expected to run down holes yards and yards long chasing and killing rabbits without laying up. Your ferrets must be housed in solid cages with room to climb and move around, your nets should be hung out to get the smell of summer, make different nets for different jobs, short ones for when the undergrowth is thick, long ones for two holes that are togeather and so on.

A domestic ferret Conservation status Domesticated Scientific classification Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Mustelidae
Genus: Mustela
Species: M. putorius
Subspecies: M. p. furo
Trinomial name
Mustela putorius furo
Linnaeus
A ferret is a domestic mammal of the type Mustela putorius furo and have a natural lifespan of 7 to 10 years. Several other small, elongated carnivorous mammals belonging to the family Mustelidae weasels ) also have the word "ferret" in their common names, including an endangered species , the Black-footed Ferret . The ferret is a very close relative of the polecat , but it is as yet unclear whether it is a domesticated form of the European Polecat , the Steppe Polecat , or some hybrid of the two. The history of the ferret's domestication is uncertain, like that of most other domestic animals. It is very likely that ferrets have been domesticated for at least 2,500 years, but it is not certain for what purpose the ferret was originally domesticated. They are still used for hunting rabbits in some parts of the world today, but increasingly they are being kept simply as pets. Being so closely related to polecats, ferrets are quite easily able to hybridize with them, and this has occasionally resulted in feral colonies of ferret polecat hybrids that have been perceived to have caused damage to native fauna, perhaps most notably in New Zealand. As a result, some parts of the world have imposed restrictions on the keeping of ferrets.

Ferrets as pets is a relatively new concept and it is only in the last 10 - 20 years that ferrets as house pets has caught on. Ferrets as working companions, however, is a relationship dating back centuries. Ferreting is a field sport, and the differences between field sports and blood sports are myriad. Blood sports involve an animal being transported to an enclosed area with no means of escape, whereas in field sports the animals are hunted in their natural habitat with every chance of escape. Any ferreter will tell you about the rabbits that have slipped through nets or used undiscovered bolt holes. "How the B**!!Y H**L did he get out?" is a question often hissed through clenched teeth. The rabbit is a pest species. The damage done to agriculture alone cost millions of pounds every year. More sad is to see keen gardeners whose hard work is slowly destroyed by rabbits, or young trees planted as part of the new forest schemes stripped bare of bark and succumbing to disease. It should be noted that the law (N.F.W.S: Pests Act 1954, Section 1) requires people to deal with pest species living on their land or be held responsible for the damage perpetrated by the pests. British Rail learned this law the hard way. The question of how to control rabbits has five answers gassing, snaring, shooting, myxomatosis or ferreting.

Ferreting through medical news and blogging - 1
The way health care is run is going to change rather dramatically over the next few years, and there doesn't appear to much that the general public can do to stop it, short of strapping oneself with explosives and taking a trip to the DoH headquarters in Whitehall. The government is intent upon a campaign of wanton destruction, having wasted billions on the internal market, the stage is now set for dishing out yet more juicy contracts to the altruistic private sector. The links between government and business are as close as ever , but I'm not quite sure that they'll be working in the best interests of the general public. It's hard to be very sure of what exactly they are up to, as various firewall-like defense mechanisms such as the Freedom of Information act mean that information and consultation are kept to an absolute minimum, until the next dastardly scheme has arrived on one's doorstep, and by then it is too late.
There is some positive news from Lancashire with a PCT pulling out of a CATS deal with Netcare due to its extremely poor value for money, I just wonder how much compensation

      The Virtue of Brevity
      By Judge John G. Koeltl
Enough! Too many lawyers write too much too often. Some lawyers are even known to talk too much.
Lawyers sometimes file motions that have little chance of being granted, and it is difficult to understand why they were filed except perhaps to burden the other side. Any objective reader knows that the motions will be denied, but the motions are filed anyway. The net effect of such motions is to delay the case. At times a judge may wonder if this could possibly be their purpose. There are costs to such wheel spinning. Such motions serve only to diminish the credibility of the lawyers who filed the motions.
      Circumventing the Page Limits
Sometimes lawyers will use multiple motions as a means of exceeding the page limits that otherwise apply. These collateral motions are sometimes submitted just to provide additional reasons why other papers allegedly are unpersuasive. For example, some lawyers may submit a cross-motion for summary judgment as a means of having a new set of briefs to explain their position in opposition to a motion for summary judgment, even though there is no real basis for granting the cross-motion.
I have not reviewed these devices to recommend them. Far from it. Judges understand when lawyers are not being straightforward, and such tactics hurt the lawyers because their credibility and reliability are undercut.

    Ferreting Out The First Stars
Cambridge, MA - What did the very first stars look like? How did they live and die? Astronomers have ideas, but no proof. The first stars are so distant and formed so long ago that they are invisible to our best telescopes. Until they explode. Hypernovas (more powerful cousins of supernovas) and their associated gamma-ray bursts offer astronomers the possibility of detecting light from the first generations of stars. NASA's Swift satellite already has seen a gamma-ray burst (GRB) with a redshift of 6.29, meaning that the progenitor star exploded about 13 billion years ago, when the universe was less than a billion years old. Theorists Volker Bromm (University of Texas at Austin) and Avi Loeb (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) predict that one-tenth of the blasts Swift will spot during its operational lifetime will come from stars at a redshift of 5 or greater, that lived and died during the first billion years of the universe. "Most of those GRBs will come from second generation or later stars," said Loeb. "But if we get lucky, Swift may even detect a burst from one of the very first stars that formed a star made of only hydrogen and helium."

In many countries, controlling shareholders are accused of tunneling, transferring resources from companies where they have few cash flow rights to ones where they have more cash flow rights. Quantifying the extent of such tunneling, however, has proven difficult because of its illicit nature. This paper develops a general empirical technique for quantifying tunneling. We use the responses of different firms to performance shocks to map out the flow of resources within a group of firms and to quantify the extent to which the marginal dollar is tunneled. We apply our technique to data on Indian business groups. The results suggest a significant amount of tunneling between firms in these groups. Ferreting Out Near-Identical Records in Access
by Ken Bluttman , author of Access Hacks
Working with lists of contacts is a common database activity. As a list grows, the probability of duplicate records increases. They could be exact duplicates, which are easy to find by running a duplicates query. In Access, the Find Duplicates Query Wizard is great for finding exact duplicates based on selected fields. This wizard is available in the New Query dialog box. On the Queries tab, click on the New button and the dialog appears; see Figure 1. But what about records that are not absolutely identical but are duplicates nonetheless? For example, one record has John Smith as the contact and another has Johnny Smith . These could be two records for the same person, but Access can't resolve them as duplicates since they are not identical. In this article I show you how to ferret out these near-identical records. The approach works by identifying whether the text value of a field in a record is found in a larger text string of the same field in another record. This approach will find that Johnny and John are indeed duplicates.
