Well, let’s just say that I spent Saturday evening watching the Miss America Pageant and the free skate portion of the 2008 U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Championships. At one point, my (gay) friend suggested that we watch something else. I almost kicked him out of my apartment. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Miss America franchise. It always seemed out of touch with the times. Well, things seem to be changing. The pageant was picked up by TLC and there’s even a Miss America reality show. That’s a very smart marketing scheme. The pageant was quite unusual. Some of the women even did push-ups on stage—very weird but kind of entertaining. Anyway, Kirsten Haglund (pictured above), the delegate from Michigan, won the Miss America crown. Good for her. Now, let’s talk about figure skating. As some of you may know, I love everything about it. And my favorite American figure skater is the one and only Sasha Cohen ; I’m sure you already knew that. So, last night, the defending U.S. National champion, Kimmie Meissner, was unable to outperform her younger rivals. In fact, she finished a disappointing 7th. Ashley Wagner, though lacking speed and grace, hit most of her jumps. Rachel Flatt delivered a great performance and finished 2nd. But the night belonged to Mirai Nagasu. This talented young lady beat 20 skaters for the National title—an impressive feat.

Inline Figure Skating Here is the first group of "tricks" that have been taken from ice figure skating & translated into inline skating moves. I will do one of each rating. The ratings are: Beginner = * Intermediate = ** Intermediate/Advanced = *** Advanced = **** Swizzles * Spiral ** 3 Turn *** Two-Foot Spin **** Waltz Jump *** Axels **** Loop Jump **** Swizzles * Spiral ** 3 Turn *** This is a move that allows you to turn backwards by skating on one foot. This will require you to go almost onto one wheel only for a split second. You will fall trying to learn this, so be prepared. Once you get it, your friends will be impressed. Use whatever foot you feel most comfortable skating on one foot. Most people feel that this move is easiest if your skating leg is your left one. There are many types of 3 turns that deal with the "edge" (direction), but right now I will just describe it generically. Try holding onto something likes a fence or bench when you first try this & watch your chin if you fall. I had a friend who bumped her chin on a bench when she fell. Gliding on one foot, allow your free foot to hang behind you. Swing the free leg around slowly & shift your hips at the same time. Let your foot rock up towards your toe & swing it backwards at the same time as your leg & hips go. You should now be skating backwards on one foot.

Saskatchewan Archives Board R-B10854 Fancy skating, as it was then called, began in the 1880s on both outdoor and indoor rinks, with competitions held at winter carnivals. The first figure skating club began in Saskatoon in 1929, attracting both adults and children. In 1934, the Wascana Winter Club in Regina opened a rink dedicated exclusively to this sport; skaters took lessons and competed in singles, pairs, and dance events. Competitions consisted of both figures, which were patterns traced on the ice, and free skating events, which featured spins and jumps. Regina skater William Thomas won the national junior men’s title in 1942. Skating became extremely popular among young girls in the 1950s. The two large city clubs served as centres of activities, with their better skaters traveling to smaller communities to give lessons and organize carnivals. Local people became qualified figure skating judges who officiated at competitions—among them Margaret Sandison, who judged for over fifty years. The province hosted interprovincial competitions, and in 1955 staged the North American Championships in Regina. Figure skating continued to grow during the 1960s and 1970s, with local organizers affecting the sport at the national as well as the provincial level. From 1965 to 1967, Bert Penfold of Regina was president of the Canadian Figure Skating Association (CFSA), in which capacity he worked to increase television coverage of national events. On the ice, the province’s skaters competed at national championships and in the Canada Winter Games, winning three bronze and three gold medals during this period. In the 1980s, organizers both nationally and provincially started two new programs to increase participation in the sport. One of these was CANSKATE, a program designed to teach preschoolers the basics of the sport.
