General Tips
Fishing is the activity of hunting for fish. It is an ancient and worldwide practice that dates back about 10,000 years with various techniques and traditions and it has been transformed by modern technological developments. Fishing continues to be a favorite pastime in the United States, in 2001, 16% of the U.S. population 16 years old and older (34 million anglers) spent an average of 16 days fishing. Freshwater fishing was the most popular type of fishing with over 28 million anglers devoting nearly 467 million angler-days to the sport.
Practice Good Stewardship of our Waterways:
You can help to take care of our lakes, rivers, and other waterways so that others may enjoy these areas for years to come by practicing some of the following actions:
  • Don't Litter... take along a trash bag or other receptacle for collecting your trash so that you can deposit it in the proper trash receptacle. Use proper dumping stations instead of tossing refuse into the water.

Fishing is the activity of hunting for fish by hooking trapping , or gathering. By extension, the term fishing is applied to pursuing other aquatic animals such as different types of shellfish squid octopus turtles ... frogs, and some edible marine invertebrates . The term fishing is not usually applied to pursuing aquatic mammals such as whales , where the term " whaling " is more appropriate, or to commercial fish farming . Fishing is an ancient and worldwide practice with various techniques and traditions and has been transformed by modern technological developments. In addition to providing food through harvesting fish, modern fishing is both a recreational and professional sport. According to FAO statistics, the total number of fishermen and fish-farmers is estimated to be 38 million. Fisheries provide direct and indirect employment to an estimated 200 million people worldwide. The average person on Earth consumes about 14 Kg of fish a year.

Grog's Fishing Knots Index
Welcome:
These animated knots are primarily used for fishing, but some are useful in other applications. The knots can be selected from the index on the left, or by their pictures above, or from a page which describes their various uses
Characteristics:
Fishing knots are designed to be tied in monofilament line and to run through the eyes and rings of a fishing rod or rig. Compared to rope, fishing line is cheap. The emphasis for fishing knots is on compactness and reliability with no interest in being able to untie them.
Fly Fishing Knots:
The picture on the right shows one typical system for fly fishing. It shows examples of knots that can be used at each junction. The purpose of the tippet is to prolong the life of the leader by replacing it when enough has been lost through breakage, re-tying flies, or damage on snags.
Similar Knots:
Many fishing knots serve almost identical purposes and are interchangeable, e.g., the knots in the following groups serve much the same purpose:
  • The Improved Clinch, Trilene, and Uni Knot.

Every 5 years the Service sponsors the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. In 2001, the survey found that:

More than 10 world-class blue-ribbon wild trout streams, including the Henrys Fork, Silver Creek and the St. Joe River, are scattered throughout the state. Many other high-quality trout streams exist that don’t get the headlines and the crowds. Idaho’s rugged mountains contain more than 1,500 high mountain lakes with good trout fishing. Numerous large natural lakes and reservoirs provide a wide variety of fishing opportunities for warm and cold-water species. In contrast to some states, most Idaho fishing waters are located in the public domain, and are open to the public. Access is free. Family Fishing Waters In response to anglers’ requests for more family-oriented fishing opportunities and simplified rules, Fish and Game has developed Family Fishing Water regulations. In these areas there are year-around seasons, a general six-fish limit for trout, bass, walleye and pike and no bag limit on other species. There are no length limits or tackle requirements.
