Merewether Thongs Floorball evolved in January 2000 when we won Australias first outdoor 3 on 3 tournament in front of 100,000 festival goers. The victory took place in dramatic overtime, one player stripped from each team every scoreless minute. Coming down to one on one, the Thongs scored 3 and a half 'gladiator' minutes later against the Sydney team to take the first prize helicopter ride over blue Newcastle January skies! Write to the thongs and say your bit on floorball! Merewether Thongs Floorball now compete in the Newcastle Junior and Senior competitions as well as other 3 on 3 events. Merewether covers the southern beaches of Newcastle which are some of the most popular in the world. Still we love to play Floorball as much as possible. History
Floorball, also known as unihockey, plastic bandy, floor bandy and soft bandy, was originally developed during the 1960s as a game for schoolchildren in Sweden. Several other countries have come up with similar games. Some writers trace floorball's origin to floor hockey, an American game that uses a plastic puck and sticks. (Floor hockey, in turn, probably derived from street hockey.) According to this account, floor hockey went to Europe, where the puck was replaced by a plastic ball. That's possible, but documentation seems to be lacking. In any event, it was in Sweden that floorball took root and developed as a sport for adults. Specifically, it began in Sala, Sweden, in 1979, when a group of recent secondary school graduates led by Christer Gustavsson began to play floorball as they had learned it during their school days. That meant a relatively small playing area, small goals, and no goalie. The game didn't prove satisfactory at their age, though, so they decided to move the game to a larger court, enlarge the goals, and add a goalie. That worked. The Sala Floorball Club was formally organized on Sept. 21, 1979, and the new sport caught on quickly, not just in Sala but throughout Sweden.

TAKE DAMN GOOD NOTE OF THIS After weeks of "information sharing" via the good ol'tagboard, the friendly between Ngee Ann Scarecrows and Team NJC has been confirmed. This follow, as mentioned, weeks of unofficial rumours between players. Following najib's short talk to those present at yesterday's training, the issue of Seniors being able to play in the friendly game has been resolved.
The match will take place at the Sports Hall of Ngee Ann Polytechnic on the 21st of March 2008 at Players are to be attired in their Blue Kit, black FBTs and Black socks. Ensure that you stick to the dress code or you might just have to sit out.
In a surprising and ironic turn of events, the organiser of the friendly has emphasised that players who fail to turn up for trainings REGULARLY; key word here is REGULARLY, will NOT be allowed to play.
Those of you who want to play for friendly matches and represent the School, please ensure a minimum 80% attendance record.
So, players who have been comin regularly and dream of playing for the school, Well Done. You're THAT much closer to your dreams.
Players who dream of playin for the school but have NOT been comin for trainins, well, dream on. You probably wont get that dream.

The strength of the team is the individual, the strength of the individual the team. - Coach Phil Jackson, Chicago Bulls
    Tuesday, April 1, 2008
    Usual
Get used to that word - you'll be reading it a lot.
Training was as usual at the usual place at the usual time attended by the usual people. The only unusual things being a new face - Nhivashni (Nhiva would suffice) invited by Kew Pei Li, and the absence of Coach Jason Chan.
It started off with some people being remarkably early and others, well, remarkably late. Seeing that it was past 9 a.m. and Technical Advisor Khor Kuan Yang was still somewhere on the island besides PBSM hall, Juniors' Coach Pei Li dragged the team up for the usual warm-up. Minutes later, Kuan Yang turned up.
With that, he took over and the players paired up to practise the usual passing while goalkeeper Bryan Koh worked on movement. Crucial as it is, passing was rather usual, nothing exciting or interesting to be said, besides the fact that something was missing. And although nothing was made verbal, it was obvious that the players sorely felt the vacuum usually filled by the energetic Jason Chan.
Usual passing progressed to not-so-usual passing, i.e. V-shaped passing and flicks/lobs ("Flob?" wondered Yi Lin). Kuan Yang did give a demonstration on how to pass and receive lobs, but, as usual, he made it look easy. Flying balls probably lightened the atmosphere a little, with short (but loud enough) exclamations and stray balls bouncing 'round the place.

.in finland: let’s move with floorball.
by C©line Valette : more and more countries try and adopt this sport. A Finnish success: why? In Finland ice hockey is the national sport: Finnish people support the national team like Spanish people encourage Real Madrid! So, in other words floorball is an alternative, a derivative from the hockey. Six players for each team on the ring (20 x 40), a very light ball, two goals (but goalkeepers without sticks), a match is able to go for 20 minutes x 3. This sport was born in Sweden where it is called : Innebandy (bandy is like ‘ice-football’). It is tricky to speak about the origines of Unihockey. It is just ice hockey’s development. At the beginning it was a complementary training for hockey. Nowadays more and more people enjoy discovering this sport. Even if Nordic countries like Finland (34 000 players) or Sweden (118 000 players) are the best and win a lot of championships, several countries have also been interested in developing and playing unihockey since the eighties. Floorball in the world: Fast, technical, funny, exhausting, floorball do not forget women! They have their own official teams and championships. In general, a world championship takes place every two years, and an European Cup every single year.
