Let me admit that despite the years in the U.S., I have never understood what's interesting about baseball and why anyone would ever care about this game. Sorry, my American friends. Also, I still don't know what's the primary reason why soccer is not one of the top games in the U.S. Is it a pure coincidence or is there something special about Americans that explains this fact? I don't know the answer. Do you? Only five countries or so have become good in floorball at the top level - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, and Czechia (where it is called simply "florbal", in analogy with "fotbal"). Instead, we had to make a great transition to floorball. The worst thing was that we had only a couple of months to do the change, and the better part was that we had a captain named Jonathan Kwong (or JOnk ), who had the experience of playing floorball. The 27 th of January was the day on which the transition skills of our team were to be tested. The team was made up of some stalwarts like Hafiz(Sr.), Terence and Florian and, not to forget, our captain Jonk and vice-captain Musa, who all helped the freshmen to settle into the squad very smoothly. Much of the following description is due to last year's commissioner Carl Manning. Floorball is an aerobic sport similar to an indoor version of field hockey or floor hockey. It is played with lightweight plastic ball and sticks, small goals; unlike hockey there are no skates, no pads, no checking - it's designed to be non-violent. There's also no goal-tending, so there may by more scoring, and unlimited substitutions keeps the game moving. As an unfamiliar sport, it challeges the AI Olympic teams to learn together what works. However, experience with hockey, soccer, basketball, or similar sports may come in handy for stick handling and passing tactics. Participation counts for your team, so come try it out even if you can't stay the entire time. Play Play starts at the center of the field at the beginning and after each goal. Players on the team controlling the ball maneuver it into their opponents' end and try to shoot it into the small (1-meter wide) goal. Players control the ball with their stick; they may block the ball with other parts of the body, but may not kick it, hit it, head it, etc. Passing is important, more so for the most of us who are new to the game. The event which serves as a platform to introduce floorball to the public, received great response in terms of participation and cheering crowd. A total of 24 teams of kids ranging from 6-12 years old mainly from churches and organisations participated in the event. Before 9am (the time which the matches were supposed to start), kids and parents were already seen flocking the place. Some were just curious to know exactly what floorball is. Some others were seen practicing their passes and shots (especially those from the Floorball School!) As most of the kids were first timers coming to experience the game, a crash course on how to play floorball was given by Edward just before the matches took place. Both categories (junior and senior, in terms of age) had their matches run simultaneously. All the kids showed their enthusiasm on court by playing their hearts out, although they were new to the game. The kids from the Floorball School did the school proud by qualifying for semi-finals, and 2 teams, each from Junior and Senior category emerged champions. The junior champions were represented by Josiah, Ashlynn and Nathalynn who made their debut appearance in a floorball competition. The Senior Champions were represented by Eythan, Nicholas and Ross. Overall, it was truly an awesome event with participation from all the teams, cheers and support from the crowd, assistance from referees and helpers and last but not least, contribution of drinks and hampers from Excel Cranberry Isotonic Drinks.
