Bay Staters grappling with legacy of rejection
Email Print Text size By Don Aucoin Globe Staff November 4, 2004 An open newspaper splayed at his feet, his brow furrowed, Mike Kelleher sat on the steps of Quincy Market yesterday not far from where John F. Kerry would soon make his concession speech and glumly digested the fact that, once again, the nation had spurned a presidential candidate from Massachusetts. ''It seems like it's sort of a culture war. It seems like the rest of the country is pretty angry at us for some reason," Kelleher, 54, of Brockton, said with a sigh. ''I just don't get it . . . It makes me feel sort of alienated." For Chris Houghton of South Boston, though, a jaunty fatalism had already asserted itself. ''After the Red Sox victory, things are back to normal here," Houghton, 32, said with a shrug. ''From euphoria back to the norm of defeat." Whether they eventually responded with angst or wounded pride or jut-jawed defiance, Massachusetts residents awoke yesterday to fresh evidence of the apparent gulf between this state and much of the country.

"I didn't write any of these songs but they speak a lot of truth about where I am in my head and in my heart. Those are pretty complicated places right now," the country star told the Tennessean
"It's bad when you've spent more time with people out on the road or with radio stations than you have with your mom, your friends or your grandmother."
The East Tennessee native sat down with the local paper to talk about his album , which is out Tuesday and showcases lyrics about "trying to slow it down" and "trying to take it in."

Grappling With The Tides Of Foreclosures
February 26th, 2008 Foreclosures Since the Great Depression America has not seen such high vacancy rates. In the next two years about 2 million mortgages will be in default. In some areas the malaise is more intense than others. The worst casualties are Florida California and Nevada . Cleveland has been dubbed the ‘sub-prime capital of US. Here as many as one out of ten houses is lying deserted and empty. Slavic Village in Cleveland was once inhabited by tight knit Polish and Czech immigrants. Today with hundreds of abandoned houses entire streets have been taken over by criminals busy stripping the houses of whatever is left. The greatest danger is that this infection will inevitably spread. With the houses worth far less than the
