Heli-skiing is essentially about skiing in a natural albeit highly selected environment without the effort or gear compromise required for hiking in. Most heli-skiers are seeking specific, pleasurable skiing conditions that are hard to replicate in the highly manipulated terrain of ski resorts: particularly powder snow, but also long descents, natural terrain contours and features, smooth corn snow, old-growth tree glades, steep and extreme slopes, or for the more adventuresome, wild snow and a natural, variable environment. The presence of the guide and machine offer some protection against the risks and discomforts unavoidably associated with entering this mountainous environment, allowing skiers with little or no mountain sense to enjoy a wild environment.

Heliskiing is the practice of alpine skiing using a helicopter to gain altitude instead of ski lifts. This allows heliskiers to ski off-piste from many different starting points when compared to using regular fixed ski lifts. It also allows people to ski in remote areas. Heliskiing is sometimes considered an extreme sport. The main risks are avalanches and skiing into obstacles such as trees or rocks. Helicopters used for heliskiing usually have an exterior locker in which skis and other equipment can be stored. From Wikipedia.org

BRECKENRIDGE LODGING Breckenridge Heli-Skiing Summit County Winter sports abound in Breckenridge Colorado, and that does not include simply skiing and snowboarding. Ice skating, min-iskiing, and snow shoeing are also very popular, and for individuals who enjoy unique sports, there is a single Heli-ski operation available in the entire state of Colorado. That operation, Telluride Helitrax, is located in the ski resort town of Telluride, as the company name might suggest. What is Heliskiing? The Heliskiing seen in motion pictures paints a picture of dangerous slopes and threatening avalanches. This, of course, is the Hollywood version and blown completely out of proportion. Heliskiing is not an extreme sport enjoyed only by the bravest members of society. Heliskiing is simply an opportunity to arrive, via helicopter, at areas of mountains unreachable by ski lifts or hiking. As heliskiers spend the day in remote locations, they have the opportunity to ski through untouched power with every run they make. There are no lines, no crowds, and more importantly, no packed icy snow. Only by heliskiing can visitors experience the snowy mountains of Colorado at their finest. Is it Dangerous?

var clickExpire = "-1"; By Julie Clothier for CNN Adjust font size: (CNN) Imagine skiing on untouched snow where chairlifts, queues and other skiers don't exist. It might sound like an impossible dream, but this is the world of heli-skiing, where skiers are dropped to remote locations by helicopter to ski down runs layered with the most perfect powdery, virgin snow. As ski resorts in the northern hemisphere begin to wind down with the arrival of spring, the heli-skiing season still has a long way to go. Former Londoner James Morland started Elemental Adventure in 2001. Back then, his company took just 15 people heli-skiing throughout the season, to both Canada and the Himalayas. Now based in Chamonix in France, Morland says he expects to take up to 250 people on trips this year with Russia now rivaling Canada in the popularity stakes.

Of course, the sexy stuff lies mostly in those unbelievably gorgeous untracked fields of fresh pow, but take away skiing and tack on any manner of outdoorsy activity when the snows melt: heli-hiking, heli-fishing, heli-paddling. It's the hottest way to flee the fanny-pack-wearing crowd and find wilderness all to yourself without the pesky effort of trekking in a week's worth of food and shelter. Rise early, eat, fly your way to seclusion, hike, eat, hike some more, fly back to your lodge in time for cocktails on the terrace.
