Hiking is a form of walking , undertaken with the specific purpose of exploring and enjoying the scenery. It usually takes place on trails in rural or wilderness areas. The word 'hiking' is understood in all English-speaking countries, but there are differences in usage. In some places, off-trail hiking is called 'cross-country hiking', 'bushwalking', or 'bushbashing'. In the United Kingdom , hiking is a slightly old-fashioned word, with a flavor more of heartiness and exercise than of enjoying the outdoors; the activity described here would be called 'hillwalking' or simply 'walking'. Australians use the term 'bushwalking' for both on- and off-trail hiking. New Zealanders use 'tramping' (particularly for overnight and longer trips), 'walking' or 'bushwalking'. Hiking in the mountainous regions of India and Nepal is sometimes called 'trekking'. Overnight hiking is called ' backpacking ' in some parts of the world. Hiking a

    Hurricane Deck Hike
Tony, a friend our ours and I hiked the Manzana trail out of Nira up to White Ledge and then across Hurricane Deck. We were supposed to go all the way to the Manzana Schoolhouse but we got tired of Hurricane Deck and it was getting late so we went down the Potrero trail and then back to our cars. The area was behind the Zaca fire burn area. The first day, from Nira to White Ledge, had many areas of total devastation. But spring flowers were blooming everywhere so it was hard to feel bad about it. If anything, it's much prettier now because you can see everywhere. But the trail itself is pretty ruined in many places. We were lucky somebody went out before us with pink garden tape leaving us a trail to follow. We still got a little bit lost. Hurricane Deck has always been horrible to hike because it's so overgrown with bushes that claw and tear at you. It was virtually unscathed in the fire. We were ready to declare the two guys who started the fire heros until we saw that their work didn't clean up Hurricane Deck. Because we spent the entire day just going about 10 miles, having brush tearing and scratching at every part of our bodies and backpacks, having it push us over and make us crawl on hands and knees, we decided we couldn't tolerate the final 5 miles of it. So we went down Potrero to a spot that always has water.
