For the 1923 film starring Oliver Hardy , see Horseshoes (film) horseshoes Horseshoes is an outdoor game played between two people (or two teams of two people) using six horseshoes and two stakes. The game is played by the players alternating turns tossing horseshoes at stakes in the ground, which are traditionally placed 40 feet (12.19 meters) apart. Modern games use a more stylized U-shaped bar, about twice the size of an actual horseshoe.

In Greece and Rome , athletic contests and games of various kinds generally formed some part of religious observances and festivals. One of the four Grecian national festivals was the Olympian Games. These Grecian Games consisted of boxing , putting the weight, chariot races archery , and discus throwing . The discus was similar in form to the modern quoit but not in size and weight. it was a circular plate of metal or stone 10- or 12-inches in diameter. It was pitched or thrown with a strap or thong passed through a circular hole in the center, the strap being released by the player as he swung it so the discus would go the greatest possible distance. Iron plates or rings for shoes may have been nailed on horses' feet in Western Asia and Eastern Europe as early as the second century BC, though there is very little evidence for the nailed

11. The History Of Horseshoes
History varies on the origin of iron horseshoes and horseshoe nails.

Help Horseshoes, Nails, Saddles, and Riding By Mary Bellis Sculptures and drawings that date from the 2nd millennium BC show men and women on horseback. The saddle probably originated in the societies of the Asian steppes (as well as the the stirrup and the horse collar) and received a high degree of development in medieval Europe. It is unknown who invented the first horseshoe. Early Asian horsemen used horse booties made from leather and plants. During the first century, the Romans made leather and metal shoes called "hipposandals". By the 6th and 7th centuries, European horsemen had begun nailing metal shoes to horses' hooves. Around 1000 AD, cast bronze horseshoes with nail holes had became common in Europe. The 13th and 14th centuries brought the widespread manufacturing of iron horseshoes. Hot-shoeing, the process of heating the horseshoe before shoeing the horse, became common in the 16th century. All before the first horseshoe was ever patented.

The Wonders of TiVo
var openit = "false"; Well, during my recent slackoff of blogging, I got a TiVo for Christmas. Let me tell you, it really is as good as people claim. It has 100% changed the way that my wife and I watch TV. No more worrying about when certain programs come on TV. No more missing Shows that I like. No more sitting down and saying "There's nothing on worth watching". If the munchkin stays up late, or a phone call comes during a good show, its no problem at all. I just hit pause. I can come back to that show whenever I want to. The only things I watch live any more are Sports (And now that Wake Forest is out of the NCAA Tournament, there won't be much of that for a while.) and 24. And 24 is only because I can only TiVo one show at a time. Plus, now I can download TiVoed shows to my PC and burn DVDs. My son has a new DVD filled with Thomas the Tank Engine shows, and I have a couple more I need to burn over to DVD waiting for me. All I have to do is set it up with the shows I want to watch, and presto. It automatically seeks thsoe shows out, regardless of what time they come on, and they are sitting there waiting for me.

13. Horseshoe Pitchers’ Hot Hands
One sport that has very few confounding influences is horseshoe pitching. The rules described here have been used at recent world championships and
http://www.economics.pomona.edu/GarySmith/horseshoes.html
Gary Smith Department of Economics Pomona College Claremont, California 91711 gsmith@pomona.edu Fax 909.621.8576 * I am very grateful to Walter Ray Williams, Jr., for sharing his data with me and for his generous and patient answers to my many questions about competitive horseshoes. Abstract key words: hot hands, horseshoes, self-efficacy The average starter takes 10-to-20 shots a game, 5-to-10 in each half. If the hot hand is a relatively modest phenomenon, a statistical test based on 5-to-10 shots will have very little power and may be hidden in data sets that combine shots of varying difficulty separated by long periods of time. When data are aggregated from different games, the confounding influences include home-court advantage, the number of days between games, and the amount of travel to get to a game. Finally, they conducted a controlled experiment in which 26 Cornell players took 100 shots moving along arcs drawn from the basket. Overall, the players were slightly more likely to make a basket after having made one-to-three shots, but the differences were statistically persuasive for only one player. Gilden and Wilson (1995) present some experimental evidence of nonconstant success probabilities in golf putting and dart throwing. However, their results might be criticized for their artificiality, as their experiments involved volunteers making 300 repetitions and being paid $5 plus (in three of the four studies) five cents for each hit. With so many trials and such small stakes, it is conceivable that there are substantial fluctuations in the attentiveness of poorly motivated volunteers. If success rates are higher when they are focused on their assignment and lower when they are bored, hits and misses will cluster in the data and exhibit the statistical patterns associated with streakiness; for example, higher hit rates after hits than after misses and fewer runs of hits and misses than expected with a constant hit rate.

Treating Founder (Chronic Laminitis) without Horseshoes
(Scroll down for Table of Contents (Click on small thumbnail photos to see larger versions.)
(Updated February 18, 2007) I have gotten better results on my foundered horse using a FREQUENT barefoot trim than with using horseshoes. This trimming style is based on the shape of wild horse feet, as described in Jaime Jackson's research on wild horses, and Dr. Hiltrud Strasser's books, " A Lifetime of Soundness " and " Shoeing: A Necessary Evil? " Dr. Strasser's books have been a tremendous help in understanding the physiology of the hoof and how different trimming and shoeing styles effect it.
My last photos of Max...early 2004 Sadly, I have to report that my old foundered horse, Max, died March 23, 2004. ...Rest well, sweet prince! Foundered foot, inside and out The success of this approach to laminitis hinges on trimming the feet OFTEN (ideally 2x weekly), keeping the horse on firm, non-concussive ground during the recovery period when he is barefoot, and using removable boots when working him on hard or rocky ground to prevent stone bruisesuntil enough sole and hoof wall thickness builds up, and enough stronger new laminae grow down to return the coffin bone to a more normal position.
